ויש הבדל בין שם "**עדה**" ובין שם "**עדת ישראל**" שנופל רק על הסנהדרין גדולה. ושם 'עדה' סתם כולל גם סנהדרין קטנה. (ויקרא ס' רמא, ויקרא ס' רמח)

There is a difference between **עדה** (congregation) and **עדת ישראל** (congregation of Israel): **עדת ישראל** means only the great *Sanhedrin*. And the noun **עדה** alone also includes a lesser *Sanhedrin*.

*The Jewish Supreme Court, called the “great Sanhedrin”, consisted of 71 judges. Each lower court, called a “lesser Sanhedrin”, consisted of 23 judges.*
