לדעת חכמי הגמרא יש הבדל בין "**עוף**" ובין "**צפור**". שעוף הוא שם הסוג וכולל טהורים וטמאים, וצפור מיוחד רק לטהורים (אם לא כשאמר "**צפור שמים**" או "**צפור כנף**"). ויש בזה פלוגתא בספרי ובירושלמי. ודעת הספרא שגם 'צפור' הוא שם הסוג (מצורע ס' יא)

According to the sages of the *Gemara*, there is a difference between **עוף** and **צפור** (bird): **עוף** is a category and includes the clean and the unclean, while צפור only includes the clean (unless it says **צפור שמים** or **צפור כנף**). And there is a disagreement about this in *Sifre* and in the *Jerusalem Talmud*. And according to *Sifra*, **צפור** is also a category.
