יש הבדל בין **חמץ** ובין **שאור**. שה"שאור" מחמיצים בו את העסה, והעסה הנחמצת ממנו נקרא "חמץ".

ויש הבדל בין **חמץ** ובין **חומץ**. החומץ כולל כמו "חומץ יין ובוסר" אבל שם 'חמץ' ו'מחמצת' היא רק העסה שנתחמצה (ויקרא ס' קלה).
