יש הבדל בין **מעל** ובין **בגד**. 'הבגידה' היא אשר ישקר בחברו בנסתר 'והמעילה' הוא השיקור והשינוי המפורסמת. וקרוב עם שתופס מעיל ובגד שהבגד מתכסה בו מלמטה והמעיל עוטף בו מלמעלה. (ויקרא סימן שמו)

There is a difference between **מעל** and **בגד** (fraud): **בגד** is when one lies to his friend in private, while **מעל** is when one lies in public. And they are analogous with the words מעיל (coat) and בגד (garment), as a בגד is worn on the inside while a מעיל is worn on the outside.
