פעל **עשק** לדעת חז"ל עיקר הנחתו על התוספות והיתור. והונח על כובש שכר שכיר מצד שיאמר להשכי שהכסף שרוצה בשכרו הוא יותר מן המגיע לו, ומזה נטה אהלו אל כל מיני כובשי שכר שכיר. (קדושים סי' כט).

The verb **עשק** (oppress), according to the sages of blessed memory, refers primarily to additions and excess. And it is used when one withholds the wages of a hired worker by saying to him that the money that he wants as his wages is more than what he is owed, and from this the employer becomes accustomed to all types of withholding wages of hired workers.
