## Malbim Ayelet HaShachar Klal 59

###### Malbim Ayelet HaShachar 59:1

לפעמים יקדים התואר אל המתואר – **שני תולעת – תולעת שני, עמים רבים – רבים עמים**. וכן **שופר תרועה, אחד קדוש, משנה כסף**. על כן כשיבואו שני שמות ותואר ביניהם לא נוכל להכריע אם התואר שייך אל השם הראשון או השני.

**Ayelet Hashachar, translated by Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2021:**
Sometimes the adjective precedes the noun being modified - **שני תולעת** - **תולעת שני**,**עמים רבים** - **רבים עמים**. And moreover **שופר תרועה, אחד קדוש, משנה כסף** . Therefore, whenever two nouns come with an adjective in-between them, it is impossible to determine whether the adjective is relevant to the first noun or the second noun.

כמו "**אביב קלוי גרש**" – יש לפרש 'אביב קלוי' ויש לפרש 'קלוי גרש', ר"ל גרש קלוי. אולם כלל בלשון שהתואר צריך שיהיה סמוך אל המתואר והמלות שבאים לבאר את התואר יבואו לבסוף, וכשאומר "קלוי באש" אי אפשר לומר שהוא תואר אל "גרש", שאם כן, היה לו לכתוב "גרש קלוי באש" (ויקרא ס' קנא).

**Ayelet Hashachar, translated by Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2021:**
Like אביב קלוי באש גרש (corn in the ear parched with fire, even groats of the fresh ear)¹³² – one can either interpret it as אביב קלוי or one can interpret it as קלוי גרש, and that it means to say גרש קלוי; however, the rule of the language is that the adjective needs to be next to the noun that it modifies and the words that come to clarify the adjective must come at the end, so when it says קלוי באש, it is impossible to say that it is modifying the word גרש, that if so, it would have written גרש קלוי באש.

וכן במה שכתב "**על חלת לחם חמץ**". אי אפשר לפרש לחם חלה, אחר ש'לחם' נסמך אל 'חמץ' היה לו לכתוב "לחם חלה חמץ". (צו ס' קה)

**Ayelet Hashachar, translated by Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2021:**
And moreover, when it is written **על חלת לחם חמץ** (With cakes of leavened bread)¹³³, it is impossible to interpret it as *לחם חלה* (where *לחם* is modified by *חלה*), since חמץ is right after לחם; if so, it would have written לחם חלה חמץ.
