**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:**(1) Why does it say “dreams” in the plural? What is meant by “and his sleep was,” which seems to imply that sleep came into being and he slept?

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar,”** — It cannot be that this refers literally to the second year; for how could they have sought to execute Daniel and his companions when they had not yet completed the required period of their training? And how could it be that in the second year Daniel interpreted the dream and was elevated—contrary to what was stated in the previous chapter, that they did not stand before the king until the completion of three years? Therefore, the words of the Sages are correct, who explained that this refers to the second year of the general reign of Nebuchadnezzar—that is, after the destruction of the Temple, when he had conquered all nations and ruled universally. At that time he began to contemplate who would reign after him, and it was revealed to him what would occur at the end of days. **“Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams,”** — that is, within this dream there were multiple dreams: the dream of the statue, and the dream of the stone that shattered the statue. Since he forgot the dream, he remembered only that he had dreamed many dreams. Scripture recounts that he retained three impressions: (1) That he had dreamed dreams, though he did not know what they were; (2) **“And his spirit was troubled,”** — he recalled that fear and dread had fallen upon him during the dream, which is a sign that it was not mere imagination, but a true dream that acts upon the soul of the dreamer and casts great terror upon him; (3) **“And his sleep remained with him,”** — that is, after the dream he remained asleep and did not awaken because of it. This indicates that a dream without substance leaves no lasting impression on the soul, whereas a prophetic dream shakes the very pillars of the body. However, sometimes fear and trembling arise during a dream due to physical causes—such as the agitation of the blood or vapors accumulating in one place—producing a frightening sensation according to the bodily disturbance that occurs during sleep. Yet in such cases, one typically awakens because of the fear. Since his spirit was troubled and yet he did not awaken from his sleep, he understood that this was not caused by blood, vapors, or faintness during sleep, but rather by an impression formed in his spiritual soul, which had perceived a vision of the future portending evil. Therefore, he set his mind to understand the dream.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And the king said,”** — He commanded to summon the **magicians**, who perform their acts secretly according to the hidden workings of nature; the **astrologers**, who divine through the stars; the **sorcerers**, who act through demonic forces; and the **Chaldeans**, who cast lots. All of these pride themselves on knowing hidden matters and future events. And it relates that he commanded them **“to tell the king his dreams”**—that is, he informed them that they were being summoned for this very purpose: to tell him what he had dreamed, without him revealing the dream to them. This was so that they could prepare themselves in their homes, applying their arts to discern all the dreams the king had dreamed that night. For they would be more decisive in this when secluded in their homes, with their instruments and books necessary for their craft, rather than when standing before the king, whose awe would confuse their thoughts, and where they would lack the tools, preparation, and solitude required. Accordingly, it would have been wiser for them not to come before him at all, once they already knew that it was not within their power to fulfill the king’s demand—why come before him empty-handed? Yet they **came and stood before the king**, which was itself a kind of defiance: they should have responded that this was beyond their ability, rather than appearing before him as though they were prepared to fulfill his request and that it lay within their power.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And he said,”** — He informed them that his primary concern was due to a single dream that had troubled his spirit, for he understood that it was revealing future events to him.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (4–8) What is meant by the phrase **“tell the dream”**? It appears to be nonsensical—did he not already tell them that he wanted to know the dream because he did not know it? And if they did not understand his words, how did they again respond that he should tell them the dream—when he himself did not remember it? In verse 5 he uses the language of **“making known,”** while in verse 6 he uses the language of **“declaring”**—what is the difference between them?

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic,”** — It explains why the Chaldeans spoke, rather than the magicians or the astrologers: because they spoke Aramaic, whereas the other sages were from different lands and were not as proficient in Aramaic as the Chaldeans, who were natives of the country. **“O king, live forever,”** — Since they could not entirely contradict the king’s words—he had already decided not to tell them the dream, yet still demanded its interpretation—they assumed that the king did in fact know the dream but did not wish to recount it, perhaps because it was a bad dream foretelling his death, and he feared to utter it lest it bring harm to his fortune. On this basis they said, **“O king, live forever”**—do not fear death. Alternatively, they thought he was testing them to see whether they knew hidden matters of the heart. Therefore they said, **“Tell the dream to your servants, and we will declare the interpretation.”** That is, they said that it is impossible for them to know something that exists only in the mind. However, they could know the interpretation even without the dream, for through astrology or sorcery they could determine what decree had been issued concerning him—whether for good or for evil. Yet they could not know in what form the message had been clothed within the dream, for the imaginative faculty can fashion many different images in various ways. For example, a decree of the king’s death might be depicted by the cutting down of a great tree, the fall of a mountain, or the slaying of a fearsome beast. It is impossible to know in which form this decree was engraved in the imagination. Therefore they proposed that the king tell the dream secretly to his servants who stand before him, and they would declare the interpretation without hearing the dream directly—for they knew the meaning of the dream, that is, the decree conveyed in it, though they did not know the dream itself, meaning the specific form and imagery in which it had been clothed. And even if there were a discrepancy between the dream and their interpretation, they could easily manipulate matters through contrivance and deception—claiming that their interpretation corresponded to the dream, and bridging any gaps through fabricated explanations and falsehood.

###### Malbim on Daniel 2:5:1
[Malbim on Daniel 2:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/2:5:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“The king answered and said to the Chaldeans: the matter has departed from me,”** — that is, not as you suppose, that I myself know the dream and merely wish to test you; rather, the dream has departed from my memory. Do not think that it will suffice for me if you declare only the interpretation without the dream. **“If you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be cut into pieces,”** — that is, they would be dismembered (or, alternatively, that their limbs would be cut as a sign of disgrace and humiliation). **“And your houses shall be made into refuse heaps,”** — for in this way I will know that you are deceiving me with falsehood.

###### Malbim on Daniel 2:6:1
[Malbim on Daniel 2:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/2:6:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“But if you declare the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive gifts, reward, and great honor from me,”** — for through this I will know that your words are true. That is, even if the dream is unfavorable, I will not become angry with you. **“Therefore, declare to me the dream and its interpretation”** — not the interpretation alone. Now, in the first clause he said: **“If you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation,”** whereas in the second clause he said: **“declare the dream and its interpretation.”** The difference is that making known (hodāʿah) applies to something that cannot be known except through one who informs it. But declaring (ḥavayah) the dream means that after they tell it to him, he himself will recall the dream, and it will become clear to him that it is indeed so. For with regard to punishment, it is sufficient that they inform him—even if he does not remember the dream, for it is possible they told him something false, and he would not be able to punish them with certainty. But with regard to receiving gifts and honor, this applies only if, through them, he recalls the dream, and it becomes clear to him that their words are true.

###### Malbim on Daniel 2:7:1
[Malbim on Daniel 2:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/2:7:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“They answered again and said: let the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will declare the interpretation,”** — After they saw that the dream had completely escaped him, and that they could no longer insist that he tell it immediately, they replied that he should wait and allow time, during which he might remember the dream. Thus they said, **“let the king tell the dream,”** meaning that he should tell it in the future, once he recalls it. At that point, he would relate it quietly to his servants, and they would declare the interpretation, and it would be seen that it corresponds to the dream.

###### Malbim on Daniel 2:8:1

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (8–9) What is meant by **“you are buying time”**? And likewise, what is meant in verse 9, which the commentators have struggled to explain? **“The king answered and said: Truly I know that you are buying time, because you see that the matter has departed from me,”** — that is, I see that you are trying to gain time, so that in the meantime you may devise some strategy to escape, since you realize that I can no longer remember the dream—and that I will not remember it later either. Thus, you gain nothing except time in order to save yourselves.

###### Malbim on Daniel 2:9:1
[Malbim on Daniel 2:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/2:9:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Therefore, if you do not make known to me the dream, one decree is for you all,”** — He added to make clear that there would be no escape for them in this. For from now on, even if he were to remember the dream, he would not be satisfied with their interpretation, since he no longer trusted them. Rather, he wished henceforth to test them—only if they would declare the dream would he believe their words. Thus, if you do not tell the dream—even if you tell the interpretation, and I later remember the dream—the decree and judgment will remain the same, and the sentence issued against you will not be altered. For it has become clear to me that **“you have prepared false and corrupt words to speak before me until the time changes,”**—that is, you intend to offer a false interpretation and a deceitful prediction. And even if the future event does not come to pass, and it becomes evident that you spoke falsely, you suppose to postpone the matter to a future time, when circumstances will change and another king will reign—and who will then hold you accountable for your lies? **“Therefore, tell me the dream,”** and through this **I will know that you can declare the true interpretation.**

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (10–11) Why does it repeat: **“there is no man who can declare the king’s matter”** and **“the thing that the king asks is difficult”**? What is the difference between them?

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“The Chaldeans answered before the king and said: There is no man upon the earth who can declare the king’s matter; for no great and powerful king has ever asked such a thing of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean. And the matter that the king asks is difficult, and there is no one who can declare it before the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”** They said to him that the matter he was asking involved difficulty from two perspectives: (1) Even if he were asking them to reveal hidden matters known to the king himself, this would already be difficult. (2) How much more so when he asks them to reveal something that is hidden even from the king himself, and no longer exists in his own mind. Now, the Chaldeans believed that there are divine beings who have a dwelling and closeness with human beings, residing in the air near them; these beings know human thoughts and convey them to those attached to them. And there are other divine beings who are completely separate from humanity—heavenly beings whose dwelling is in the heavens. Thus they said: to know the thoughts of human beings—this might be known by those who have association and connection with such intermediate divine beings who dwell near humans. Yet even so, the magicians, astrologers, and Chaldeans cannot know this, for their domain is not with such divine beings, but rather with natural science and the laws of the stars. This is the meaning of **“there is no man upon the earth who can declare the king’s matter”**—even to declare the king’s own thoughts (things known to him), no earthly human can do so; only heavenly beings dwelling above the earth could. And they brought proof for this: **“no great and powerful king has ever asked such a thing,”**—meaning all have agreed that this is impossible except for one who has connection with divine beings, not for magicians or astrologers. **“And the matter that the king asks,”** — however, the matter the king asks of us—to reveal something that even he himself does not know—**“is difficult”**; this is something that even the intermediate divine beings cannot know. Rather, **“there is no one who can declare it except the gods”**—the higher divine beings **“whose dwelling is not with flesh,”** who are entirely separate from humanity. These alone know such things, but they do not reveal their will to human beings. Therefore, it is altogether impossible—even for prophets who walk before God. And the Sages explained that they meant: the matter is difficult because it requires prophecy, and there is no one to consult through the Urim and Thummim. According to this, they acknowledged that Israel once had this unique ability—to attain prophetic knowledge from the supreme God in heaven—but this was no longer present after the destruction of the Temple, when the Divine Presence departed. And it is explained that for this reason he became angry with them all, since they had advised the destruction of the Temple.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Then the king, in contrast, was filled with rage and great wrath and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon,”** — that is, he was enraged because of the dream, and wrathful toward the sages. Therefore, he ordered the destruction of all the wise men. For the term **“wise men”** is a general category, including the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and Chaldeans—those who dealt with interpreting dreams and uncovering hidden matters—as well as sages in other disciplines, such as natural science, engineering, statecraft, and the like. Yet the latter were not involved with dreams and visions, and were not summoned at all to tell the king his dreams, since this was not their field. Therefore, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were also not summoned, even though they were wise; for although Daniel understood all visions and dreams, the king was unaware of this. Thus, it was not proper that the other sages—who were not involved in this matter and had not even been called before the king—should be put to death. Rather, due to the intensity of his rage and wrath, it was as though an error had issued from the ruler, ordering the destruction of all the wise men indiscriminately.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Then Daniel answered with counsel and understanding to Arioch, the chief of the king’s executioners, who had gone out to slay the wise men of Babylon,”** — Now Daniel, who was at the king’s gate, certainly heard of the matter and knew all that had occurred. Yet, as long as they had not sought to harm him, he remained silent—for why should he place himself in danger? However, once he saw that they intended to kill him as well, if he had simply said that he could reveal the dream and requested time, they would have asked him why he had remained silent until now and had not come forward when all the sages were summoned for this purpose. And now the time had already passed, and no time would be granted—as the king had already made clear that he would not allow delay, since this involved deception (as explained above, verse 8). Therefore, he acted wisely and made himself appear as though he knew nothing of what had transpired, and he asked Arioch for the reason why they wished to kill the sages. This was a profound strategy: once Arioch informed him of the reason, he would then say that he could provide the interpretation and that until now he had not known anything about the matter. Thus, it would be fitting to grant him a special allowance of time—for if they intended to execute him, they should first ask him whether he could reveal the dream, just as they had asked the other sages; and he, after all, claimed that he could do so. This is the meaning of **“he answered with counsel and understanding to Arioch”**—he asked about the reason for the execution, and this inquiry itself was an act of strategic counsel.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“He answered and said to Arioch, the king’s officer: Why has the decree gone forth with such severity from before the king? Then Arioch made the matter known to Daniel,”** — Daniel asked him the reason why the decree had gone out with such force. He did not address him in this question as the chief of the executioners, but rather as a royal officer and ruler, for in his capacity as a high official among the king’s ministers (aside from his present role as chief executioner), he would be expected to know the reason behind a royal command. Then Arioch informed Daniel that this had arisen because of a dream which the king had forgotten.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And Daniel went in and requested of the king that he grant him time, and he would declare the interpretation to the king,”** — Once the matter became known to him, he had grounds to enter before the king, since he had not been summoned initially with the other sages, yet they sought to kill him as though he were involved in the matter. Thus, his request was that time be granted so that he might declare the interpretation—as though he already knew the dream itself, and required time only for the interpretation. For the king had already stated that he would not grant time to the sages regarding the dream, and a royal decree cannot be reversed. Therefore, his request was framed only with respect to the interpretation.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Daniel answered and said,”** — This thanksgiving is divided into two parts: first, a general expression of praise for the works of God as a whole; and afterward, a particular expression of gratitude for His providence toward him specifically. **“To Him—may the name of God be blessed from everlasting to everlasting, for wisdom is His,”** — He explains that God is the source and root of all things, both with respect to existence in general—so long as it endures by His will—and this is “from everlasting to everlasting,” meaning for all the time that this world exists, sustained by His flow, His will, and His blessing, until He wills that another world come into being. This encompasses the entire duration of the world’s existence, until eternity replaces it. Likewise, He is the source of wisdom and power, for wisdom and might are not attributes added to Him; rather, He is the very essence of wisdom and might. And all wisdom and all power that exist in reality are emanated and flow from Him.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding,”** — Now he explains his words. With regard to what he said—that God rules as He wills over all time, extending according to His purpose until its ultimate end, with light and darkness—he explains how He brings about changes and transformations within this span of time, which is a realm of change. Thus, **“He changes the times and the seasons.”** With regard to what he said—that might belongs to Him, he explains: **“He removes kings and establishes kings,”** for power and authority come from Him; and when He removes that power, the kingdom collapses and is given to whomever He endows with His might. And with regard to what he said—that wisdom belongs to Him, he explains: **“He gives wisdom to the wise,”** meaning that the flow of wisdom comes from Him, but He bestows it only upon one who is prepared. As it is said, the Holy One does not grant wisdom except to one who already possesses wisdom—that is, after natural preparation, the Divine influence comes. The order of levels is: wisdom (ḥokhmah), understanding (binah), and knowledge (daʿat). Wisdom is that which is received from God, and God grants wisdom to one who is prepared to receive the principles of wisdom. After this comes understanding—to derive one thing from another through one’s own reasoning. And when one understands through wisdom, one attains clear knowledge, like something perceived by the senses or grasped as a first principle—this is called knowledge (maddaʿ / daʿat). Thus, **“He gives knowledge to those who have understanding.”** And I have explained all this in the commentary on Book of Proverbs.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with Him,”** — Now he adds that in matters to which the human intellect has no access at all: whether in matters that cannot be grasped because of the depth of the subject—He reveals **deep things**; or in matters that, beyond their depth, are also concealed in secrecy—such as things that can only be known through prophecy—He reveals **hidden things**; or in matters that are still in darkness and have not yet come to light at all—such as future events, still wrapped in obscurity—He **knows what is in the darkness**. He further explains that there is a distinction between the knowledge of God and the knowledge of human beings. Human knowledge, which comes through the senses, operates in such a way that the perceived object enters the eye of the observer from without, and the eye is affected by the rays of light that shine upon it from the object; therefore, a person cannot see things that are in darkness. But God’s knowledge is not sensory. Rather, His knowledge itself illuminates the existence of things. And since light dwells with Him, He knows even what is in the darkness.

**“Therefore, Daniel went in to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and said to him: Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon; bring me in before the king, and I will declare the interpretation to the king,”** — He explains the reason why Daniel went to Arioch and did not go directly to the king (as he had earlier entered on his own to request time). This was because Arioch had been appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and Daniel feared that in the meantime he might carry out his mission and kill them. Therefore, he first went to him to restrain the agents of death. Moreover, by reasoning alone he could not save the wise men of Babylon merely by declaring the dream, for this would actually increase their guilt—since they had said, “there is no man on earth who can declare the king’s matter,” and it would be exposed that they had lied when it became clear that such a man did exist. Therefore, he first said to him not to destroy the wise men of Babylon, but rather to bring him before the king, and he would intercede on their behalf to calm the king’s anger and fury. And so that the king would not be angry with Arioch for not yet carrying out his command, he devised that Arioch should bring him before the king as though he had found Daniel and sent him to request time. In this way, he would have a justification for why he had not immediately killed the wise men, as commanded by the king. And he said, **“I will declare the interpretation,”** meaning that it would become clear to the king that this was the true interpretation—for the term implies demonstration, since he would also recount the dream and the thoughts of the king’s heart, until it would be known with certainty that it was indeed so.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Then Arioch brought Daniel before the king in haste,”** — with urgency and alarm, as though his hand were still stretched out to carry out the king’s command to destroy the wise men, but was temporarily restrained by the discovery he had made—namely, Daniel—and that he would immediately fulfill the king’s command. **“And he said to him: I have found a man from among the exiles of Judah who will make known the interpretation to the king,”** — that is, for this reason I delayed in carrying out my mission. He presented it as though he himself had found Daniel and sent him to the king. And he emphasized that this man was not from Babylon but from Judah, one of the exiles—this both reflects favorably and unfavorably upon the wise men of Babylon: On the one hand, it suggests that such wisdom comes from afar, from a place where prophecy and divine revelation were found; on the other hand, it places them in a worse light, since their wisdom is inferior to that of a man who has been poured from vessel to vessel and has gone into exile in a foreign land. And Arioch said, **“he will make known the interpretation,”** rather than using Daniel’s wording, **“I will declare it,”** which implies that the king would remember the dream and verify it. For Arioch did not believe Daniel to that extent; he only claimed that at least he would provide the interpretation.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Daniel answered before the king and said,”** — Before revealing the secret, he first sought to remove the king’s anger from the wise men, upon whom he had decreed death. This could be for one of two reasons: either the king thought that it was possible to reveal such a matter and therefore sentenced them to death for lacking sufficient wisdom; or he believed that it was indeed impossible, and therefore ordered their destruction since their wisdom was vain and useless—if they could not know hidden things, why should they be sustained at all? To address both possibilities, he sought to calm the king’s wrath. First, he said: **“The secret which the king has asked cannot be declared to the king by wise men, enchanters, magicians, or sorcerers,”** — for it is beyond the reach of human intellect. And since all of these operate through demons, the powers of the stars, or natural forces—which are inferior powers—it is impossible for them to reveal such a secret.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets,”** — and He has no connection with these sages, nor does He reveal His secrets to them. Therefore, they are not deserving of death for failing to know this secret, since it is impossible for them to know it. Nevertheless, you should not say that they ought to be destroyed because they are of no use. For **“the God in heaven has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days,”** — since Nebuchadnezzar rules over a universal empire, He revealed to him future events concerning the end of days. This is something known only to God alone, and He does not reveal it to any person except to a great king such as him, who desires to know it—as will be explained. Thus, He revealed it to him on this one occasion. Even so, the king may still derive benefit from his sages, for with regard to other dreams and revelations—which are of lesser significance compared to this one, and do not concern the end of days but rather the near future, and which arise through the imaginative faculty and lower powers—his sages are able to offer some explanation. A dream of such magnitude will not occur again, since its subject matter is so remote. Now he begins to address the dream itself: **“Your dream and the visions of your head upon your bed are these.”**

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“You,”** — He explains to him the reason why the Holy One revealed these future events to him: it was because he had prepared himself for this. For **“you, O king—your thoughts came upon your bed concerning what would be after this,”** — that is, you desired to know what would come after you. **“And the Revealer of secrets has made known to you what will be,”** — and through this preparation, Hashem made it known to you—not only what would occur after you, but what would happen until the end of days.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And as for me, it is not through any wisdom that I possess more than all the living that this secret has been revealed to me,”** — so that you should not become angry with the wise men of Babylon for not being as wise as I am. Rather, **“it is in order that the interpretation be made known to the king, and that you may understand the thoughts of your heart,”** — for it was necessary that this be revealed to some person, and He appointed me as the agent for this. Thus, there is no question as to why He did not reveal it to your sages, since it was only necessary to reveal it to a single individual. He found me prepared for this mission through prayer, and there is no further reason to be sought in the divine will.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (31–32) What is meant by the phrase **“one great image”** and **“this image was great”**—is this not redundant? And if **“this”** is to be understood as “this one” (as explained by Abraham ibn Ezra), does not the word “this” refer to something presently before him? And why then does it again say “the image”? **“You, O king—you were watching, and behold, one great image; this image was immense and its splendor was great, standing before you, and its appearance was terrifying,”** — He said to him that this dream which you saw was because **you are the king**, and therefore you were shown a dream that pertains to universal kingship until the end of all generations. As for the phrase **“you were seeing… this image,”** (where “this image” means “this very image,” as in the Aramaic usage d’khen), this indicates that at the moment Daniel began to recount the dream—describing a great image—at that very moment the vision was formed again before Nebuchadnezzar, and he now saw the image again in a visionary perception. Daniel perceived this and said to him: this image that is now standing before you, which you are presently seeing just as you saw it in the dream—it is immense, its splendor is great, and it is now standing before you, as if to say: lift your eyes now and observe all its details. He describes in it three aspects: (1) that it was great; (2) that its splendor was great; (3) that its appearance was terrifying. For the image represents all the kingdoms: it is great in its extent over all humanity, its splendor is great in the glory of kingship, and it is terrifying in that it casts its fear upon all living beings.

It was this that had cast upon him great terror. Therefore he said, **“you were seeing,”**—that is, at that time you saw another vision which you have now forgotten. **“You were watching until a stone was cut out, not by hands”** (that is, of itself), and it struck the image upon its feet of iron and clay and crushed them.

**“You, O king, are the king of kings,”** — and the Sages explained that this refers to the Holy One; that is, you are a king whom the King of kings, blessed be He, has made king. As it continues, “for the God of heaven has given you…” He explains that the image as a whole represents all the kingdoms that will arise from now until the end of days, until kingship returns to God alone, who appoints kings. And as long as flesh, not spirit, rules, it is depicted as an image—an idol in which falsehood is cast, and in which there is no spirit. Just as this image was composed of four types of metals, each inferior to the one before it, so too four kingdoms will arise, one after another. And since he associates the head of gold with the kingdom of Nebuchadnezzar, he explains the reason: (1) Because **you are the king, a king of kings**, and therefore you correspond to the head, since you are supreme over all kings. Until now, there had been no ruler over the entire world—each kingdom stood independently, and they did not combine into a single unified structure. Now, all kings stand under him, and he is their head. (2) Just as the head is the seat of intellect and the spiritual soul, so too this kingdom was given to him by the God of heaven, as it says: **“for the God of heaven has given you.”** And just as gold has superiority over all other metals in three respects: (1) it endures and does not rust—corresponding to **“strength” (ḥoshen / ḥosen)**, meaning stability and endurance; (2) it is stronger than other metals—corresponding to **“power” (tokef)**; (3) it is more valuable and esteemed—corresponding to **“glory” (yĕqār)**.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And after you,”** — After you, another kingdom will arise, **inferior to yours.** He now explains the analogy of silver, which is of a lower rank than gold, indicating the kingdom that will arise after him—namely, the kingdom of Media and Persia. It is **another kingdom**, that is, of a different kind, just as silver is not of the same kind as gold. And it is **lower** than you, just as silver is of lesser value than gold. He depicts it as the chest and two arms, for this kingdom consisted of two kingdoms—Media and Persia—just as it is seen in the vision (chapter 8) that it has two horns. **“And another third kingdom, of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth,”** — that is, the third part—the belly and thighs, which were of bronze—corresponds to the third kingdom, the kingdom of Greece. This too is a different kind, just as bronze is a distinct metal. And it is of bronze because it will rule over all the earth—for bronze signifies the strength of dominion. And just as the belly encompasses and sustains the whole body, for from it the entire body develops in its formation, and it is the root of the human being inasmuch as he is like a tree of the field in his vegetative aspect, so too the kingdom of Alexander will fill the entire earth.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron; just as iron crushes and shatters everything, so, like iron that breaks all these, it will crush and break,”** — He now explains the analogy of iron, which corresponds to the fourth kingdom, the kingdom of Rome. Here he does not say **“after you,”** because the Roman kingdom did not arise suddenly; rather, it initially coexisted with the Greek kingdom, and each was a powerful empire. Therefore, he depicts the thighs and the legs together—since both belong to the structure of the legs: the thighs of bronze and the lower legs of iron—because they stood adjacent to one another. For this reason, he does not say “another after it,” but rather **“a fourth kingdom.”** He explains that it is likened to iron in terms of its strength, in two respects: (1) Like iron that grinds down and strips everything—even things it does not fully break, it can reduce or strip for use; (2) Like iron that crushes and shatters completely. Thus, this kingdom will completely destroy some nations, while it will subdue and weaken others, leaving them intact but subject under its rule. With regard to the first aspect he says, **“it will crush all these,”** and with regard to the second he says, **“and break them,”** as is also seen in the later vision (chapter 7): “it devoured and crushed, and trampled the remainder with its feet.”

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And that which you saw,”** — Now, regarding this fourth kingdom, which he depicted in the legs and feet (the two lower parts of the body), he saw that the legs were entirely of iron; however, **the feet and the toes were partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron.** This indicates that the Roman kingdom would at first be entirely strong like iron. He portrays this kingdom with two legs, for it was divided into two realms—Ishmael and Edom—and both were like iron, until they reached the stage of the feet. Thus it says, **“the kingdom shall be divided,”** and from that point onward one part would be of iron and one of clay: one would strengthen while the other weakened. Therefore, it does not specify which foot is iron and which is clay, because this was not fixed—at times the former prevailed, and at times the latter. He further saw that **“there shall be in it of the strength of iron,”** — that is, even within the clay there would remain some of the strength of iron, **just as you saw iron mixed with the clay of the potter.** This means that even in the weaker kingdom there would be some strong individuals mixed among the weaker ones.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And the toes of the feet,”** — After this, he looked at the toes of the feet, which are the final extremity of the image, representing the last stage of the kingdoms. He saw that the toes were ten, for in the end of days the general Roman dominion—already divided between Edom and Ishmael, the two legs—will further divide into ten toes, which are ten kingdoms. At that time, there will be ten great kingdoms in the world, and no single kingdom will rule universally; rather, ten will rule in parallel—some from Edom and some from Ishmael. This is also seen in the later vision (chapter 7), where the fourth beast has ten horns, as will be explained there. At that stage, it will not be that one side is iron and the other clay; rather, within each leg there will be toes of iron and toes of clay—that is, within both the kingdom of Edom and the kingdom of Ishmael there will be both strong and weak rulers. Thus it says: **“part of the kingdom shall be strong, and part shall be broken,”** meaning that within each itself there will be both strength and weakness.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“That which you saw,”** — And what you saw, that even in the toes of the feet iron was mixed with clay, is because these kingdoms **will intermingle with the seed of men,** — the weaker will intermarry with the stronger and join with them through alliances, and through this the weaker will gain strength from the stronger. Yet despite this, they will not truly cleave to one another, for they will speak one thing while meaning another in their hearts, and the stronger will devise plans to absorb the weaker under its rule.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And in the days of those kings,”** — that is, when these kings represented by the toes of the feet are in existence, the final rulers who will be at the time of redemption, **“the God of heaven will establish a kingdom that shall never be destroyed,”** — that is, a kingdom that will endure forever and never be abolished. **“And the kingdom shall not be left to another people,”** — meaning it will not be handed over for any other nation to rule alongside it; rather, it will be a single, exclusive kingdom. **“It shall crush and bring an end to all these kingdoms,”** — first it will crush and weaken them, and afterward it will completely destroy them; **“and it shall stand forever.”**

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“This corresponds to what you saw—that a stone was cut out not by hands, and it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold,”** — The stone represents the “Stone of Israel” that will arise through God, not by human hands or power, and this stone will bring all of them to an end. However, here the order is changed—iron, bronze, clay—whereas the natural order from bottom to top is iron, clay, bronze. By this he indicates how this will come about: through the wars of Gog and Magog, when all the descendants of Edom will gather to fight against the descendants of Ishmael, and they will destroy one another, as is explained in Book of Ezekiel and Book of Zechariah. It is explained that Edom—symbolized by iron (for it will be dominant at that time against Ishmael)—and Greece—symbolized by bronze—are aligned as one side; while under the dominion of Ishmael will then be Media and Persia (symbolized by silver) and Babylon (symbolized by gold), all of whom are associated with the rule of Ishmael, as is known. Thus it says, **“and it crushed the iron and the bronze,”** meaning that Edom and Greece will crush **“the silver, the clay, and the gold,”**—that is, the realm of Ishmael, represented by the clay which encompasses silver and gold, namely Persia and Babylon. **“The great God has made known to the king what shall be after this,”** — how the stone will grow and endure forever; this is the end of days and their ultimate purpose. And he concludes: **“the dream is certain,”**—it has firm existence—**“and its interpretation is trustworthy,”** for the Eternal One of Israel does not lie and does not relent.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face and bowed to Daniel, and commanded that an offering and fragrant incense be presented to him,”** — for he thought that there was divinity in him, as the ancients would attribute divinity to anyone in whom they saw something beyond the natural order. Therefore, instead of falling upon his face to give thanks to the God of heaven, he bowed to Daniel, thinking that he was one upon whom the God of heaven caused His presence to rest, and that he served as an intermediary between God and human beings. As it is said (cf. Book of Malachi 1:11), “in every place incense is offered to My name,” meaning that they would offer incense to those whom they believed to have closeness to the Divine Name. It is clear, however, that Daniel did not accept this from him, as the Sages also taught.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“The king answered and said to Daniel,”** — as if to excuse himself that he was not offending the honor of God, for he believed that God is the God of gods. At that time, people attributed separate domains to different powers—such as gods of thunder, of wind and storm, of rain, of strength and might, and of wisdom and secrets—and above them all, a higher God who ruled over them. Thus he said that he believed that the God of Israel is the God over all of them in divinity, and that all are subject to Him. Likewise, He is Hashem of kings and the revealer of secrets—all of which was demonstrated through this dream: that He rules over all times, and over kings, to establish and remove them, and that He knows all secrets. All this was proven by the fact **“that you were able to reveal this secret.”**

**Sefaria Community Translation:**

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And Daniel requested of the king,”** — that the burden of this office be eased from him; and instead of appointing him as governor over Babylon, that this responsibility be given to his companions. And he himself remained at the king’s gate, serving as the king’s advisor, counselor, and patron.
