**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (1) Why did he begin by saying that he was at ease in his house?

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:1:2

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“I, Nebuchadnezzar,”** — he began by stating that the dream and the entire matter that came upon him—when he became like a beast, separated from human society, and was afflicted with a severe melancholy to the point of utter despair—did not come to him as a result of troubles or suffering, which normally bring about such conditions. For he had no troubles in his home, for **“I was at ease in my house”** (and it is explained that “ease” refers to inner tranquility, distinct from mere “peace”), and he also had no troubles from enemies around him, nor wars within or outside the kingdom, for he was **“flourishing in my palace,”** that is, in the royal court.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“I saw a dream,”** — and yet **“the dream frightened me,”** and caused terror and fear to fall upon me. Afterward there were **“thoughts upon my bed,”** — troubling and terrifying reflections, and also **“the visions of my head alarmed me,”** — that afterward there stood before my eyes frightening visions, as though I were seeing dreadful and terrifying sights.

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:3:1

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (3–6) What is meant by the phrase **“and from me a decree was issued”**? He should have said that he sent to summon the wise men of Babylon, as in chapter 2. And why did he not now command that they be put to death for failing to interpret the dream, when this request was easier than the first time, when he demanded that they tell him what he had dreamed? And why did he call Daniel only at the end—did he not already know Daniel’s wisdom, and should he not have summoned him first?

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:3:2
[Malbim on Daniel 4:3:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/4:3:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And from me a decree was issued, that all the wise men of Babylon be brought before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream,”** — since until now the wise men of Babylon had been kept at a distance from him, because in his eyes they were as those liable to death from that earlier time, therefore he issued a decree that they were now permitted to come before him and that they should be brought in. For this reason he does not say here, as above (chapter 2), that he sent to summon all the wise men of Babylon.

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:4:1

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Then the magicians entered,”** — etc., **“and I told them the dream,”** — (unlike the first time, when he demanded that they tell him the dream itself), and nevertheless they were unable to make known its interpretation.

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:5:1
[Malbim on Daniel 4:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/4:5:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And at last, Daniel came in before me, whose name is Belteshazzar, after the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of holy gods, and I told the dream before him,”** — Why did he not call Daniel at the beginning, even though he already knew that he reveals mysteries? Because Daniel had said the first time that what was revealed to him—the dream and its interpretation—came from the Most High God, since God wished to make known to the king what would be in the end of days. He had told him that such a matter could not be known by any sage, for that dream did not come from lower forces, but from the Most High alone. Therefore, as long as the king thought that this was an ordinary dream, arising from lower levels—through the stars, the celestial powers, and the imaginative faculty—he assumed that Daniel would not be able to explain it, since Daniel’s connection was with the Most High God, who, in his view, would not reveal or concern Himself with such particular matters, but only with general ones. For at that time he did not believe that the Most High God exercises providence over specific details. Thus, he first called the other wise men, whose domain was the powers of the stars, spirits, and the like, thinking that through them such minor matters could be known. But when he saw that their wisdom had failed to interpret the matter, he recognized that it was a great and general matter, beyond the limits of their knowledge, and that it must be a dream coming from the Most High God—the same God who inspires Daniel, as it says, “and the spirit of holy gods is in him.” Therefore he called Daniel. And he explains that he called him at the end because his name was Belteshazzar, and because the spirit of holy gods was in him. And the phrase “and I said” applies to both—meaning, “and I said to him.”

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:6:1
[Malbim on Daniel 4:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/4:6:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, since I know that the spirit of holy gods is in you and no mystery is hidden from you—tell me the vision of the dream that I saw, and its interpretation,”** — He said to him: it is upon you to interpret the dream, whether it is from a lower level, in which case you can interpret it through the wisdom of magic, since you are the chief of the magicians; or whether it is from a higher level, from the Most High, which cannot be known through magical arts—for then, since the spirit of holy gods is in you, no mystery is hidden from you. Thus, you will not need to seek the interpretation by proceeding from the dream (the later effect) back to its cause; rather, through the spirit of God you will know the matter from its source to its outcome, until you know both the dream and its interpretation together, just as before. And this is what he means by **“tell the vision of the dream and its interpretation,”**—that you will know even the dream itself.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (7–9) Why does he repeat, **“its height was great”** and **“its height reached to the heavens”**? And likewise, why does he repeat, **“and food was in it for all”** and **“from it all flesh was fed”**?

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:7:2

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And the visions,”** — based on this he told him the dream, and said: **“the visions of my head upon my bed,”**—so that you should not say that this was an imaginary vision, that when the head is filled with vapors it merely seems to see things; rather, **I saw**—I perceived the matter in actuality, not in imagination. **“And behold, a tree in the midst of the earth,”** — that is, he saw as though the tree was now sprouting and emerging from the earth outward. And afterward he saw **“its height was great,”**—that it continued to grow, rising higher and becoming ever greater.

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:8:1

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“It grew,”** — and afterward I saw that it became **“a great tree,”** large in its substance, **“and it became strong,”** — that the trunk of the tree became exceedingly thick, not like trees that grow tall but remain slender. And I saw that it grew so much that **“its height reached to the heavens,”** and it became so powerful and thick that **“its appearance was to the end of the earth,”** for something thin, even if it reaches to the heavens, cannot be seen from afar; but in order to be visible from a great distance, its trunk must be immensely thick, extending for many leagues.

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:9:1
[Malbim on Daniel 4:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/4:9:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Its foliage was beautiful,”** — afterward I saw that it developed beautiful branches, **“and its fruit was abundant,”** — its produce increased greatly, until **“there was food in it for all,”** meaning that its fruits were sufficient to provide nourishment for all creatures. **“Under it,”** — afterward he saw that all living creatures gathered to this tree, so that **“under it the beasts of the field found shade, and in its branches the birds of the heavens dwelt,”** and he saw that **“from it all flesh was fed,”**—for at first he saw that there was food available in it for all, and now he saw that they were actually nourished from it in practice.

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:10:1
[Malbim on Daniel 4:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/4:10:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (10–14) What is the difference between **“a watcher” (עיר)** and **“a holy one” (קדיש)**? And why does he repeat, **“the decree of the watchers is the matter,”** and **“by the word of the holy ones is the request”**? And how does it make sense, regarding the tree, that they should bind it with iron and bronze, that it should eat grass, and that its heart should be changed from that of a man—since all of this does not apply to a tree at all?

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:10:2
[Malbim on Daniel 4:10:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/4:10:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“I was seeing,”** — now he saw a new vision: **“and behold, a watcher and a holy one descended from heaven,”**—that is, an angel descended from heaven who is called both a watcher and a holy one. A **watcher (עיר)** is the angel appointed to carry the matter out into action, while a **holy one (קדיש)** is the higher angel who influences and directs him—so that he saw, as it were, both the officer who executes and the judge who commands together.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“He cried aloud,”** — and the watcher proclaimed with force and said: **“Cut down the tree,”** — fell the tree, **“and cut off its branches,”** — these are the large branches, **“strip off its foliage,”** — remove the smaller offshoots that grow from the branches, upon which the fruits develop, **“and scatter its fruit,”** — disperse its produce, **“let the beasts flee from beneath it,”** — the animals shall move away from under it, **“and the birds from its branches.”**

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:12:1
[Malbim on Daniel 4:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/4:12:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“But leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with bands of iron and bronze, in the grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let its portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth,”** — After presenting the metaphor of the tree, the vision now shifts into its interpretation, in such a way that it is as though the dream is being explained within the dream itself. For the binding with chains does not apply to a tree, but rather to a wild or deranged man; and eating grass and being drenched with dew apply only to an animal. This is the interpretation of the dream: after a severe melancholy came upon him and he became like a wild man, harming those around him and attempting to flee into the forest, they would naturally strive to restrain him and bind him with chains of iron, as is done with violently deranged individuals—this is **“bound with bands of iron and bronze.”** Afterward, the physicians saw that he had become like an animal and desired to eat grass of the field, so they gave him grass in his home—this is **“in the grass of the field.”** Then they observed that he wished to bathe in the dew of heaven, and they brought him dew for washing—this is **“let him be wet with the dew of heaven.”** But all this did not help, until they finally allowed him to go out into the wilderness to eat grass together with the animals—this is **“and let his portion be with the beasts.”**

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:13:1

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“His heart,”** — afterward his heart was changed from the heart of a man, and the heart of a beast was given to him, so that he no longer feared any animal, but became like them, living together with them. **“And seven times shall pass over him,”** — that is, during this madness there will be seven changes, meaning that the condition will vary over seven years or periods, until the final change, at which point he will be healed.

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:14:1

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“By the decree of the watchers is the matter,”** — the execution of the decree, that it should become a fixed and enacted judgment, is carried out by the watchers; and they received this matter **“by the word of the holy ones,”**—that is, from the higher angels, who in turn requested it from the One above them, the Most High. And the purpose of this decree is **“that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whom He wills, and sets over it the lowliest of men,”**—until in the end the lowliest of men will hold dominion in the Holy Land, namely the stone cut without hands, which will take possession of the kingdom in the land at the end of days.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen,”** — that is, this is not a simple dream, but one that pertains to kingship, since I, the king, saw it; and the dream of a king concerns general matters. And especially I, Nebuchadnezzar, who am feared among the kings of the earth. Therefore, **“you, Belteshazzar, declare its interpretation,”**—for in matters that are lofty and general, you are able to know the interpretation. He brings proof that this dream is not about a particular matter that would belong to the magicians, who deal with minor, lower-level things: **“since all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation,”**—for if it were a particular matter, they would have been able to know it. But since it is a matter that is elevated, beyond magic and astrology, it must be a great matter issuing from the Most High. Therefore, **“you are able,”** you can know its interpretation, **“because the spirit of the holy gods is in you,”** which reveals to you matters of a general and higher nature.

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:16:1
[Malbim on Daniel 4:16:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Daniel/r/4:16:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonished for about an hour, and his thoughts alarmed him,”** — for he feared to reveal the interpretation, which foretold the king’s misfortune, lest the king become angry with him. **“The king answered and said: Let not the dream or its interpretation alarm you,”** — he assured him that no harm would come to him if he revealed the evil destined for him. Indeed, Nebuchadnezzar already sensed within himself that it was a bad dream, for from what had been said at the end he understood that the tree referred to himself and his kingdom, since it was a dream that is interpreted within the dream itself, as will be explained. **“Daniel answered and said: My lord, may the dream be for your enemies, and its interpretation for your adversaries,”** — that is, may the dream and its fulfillment apply to them; the adversary is greater than the mere hater—upon the adversary the interpretation should be fulfilled, while the hater is the one who would merely experience such frightening dreams.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (17–21) Why did Daniel omit several elements from the dream, as the careful reader will notice? And what is meant by **“this is the interpretation… and it is the decree of the Most High”**—this seems to imply that he had already told him the interpretation and then said that it is a decree from the Most High, yet he has not yet actually explained the interpretation?

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“The tree that you saw, which grew and became strong,”** — he did not mention the beginning of the dream, **“and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great,”** which indicates the beginning of the tree’s growth. He did not wish to remind him that he rose from a lowly state, but mentioned only that which reflects his greatness. And in the dream it says, **“under it the beasts of the field found shade,”** but Daniel said, **“they dwelt,”**—for at first the kings found shade and refuge under him, and afterward they came under his authority and dwelt beneath him. And the birds are a metaphor for merchants, as in Ezekiel (chapter 31), and in the dream it says that the birds dwelt in its branches, but Daniel said, **“they settled,”**—using an expression appropriate to the dwelling of birds, as is their nature, and he adjusted the wording out of respect for the king. And Daniel did not repeat what was said, **“and from it all flesh was fed,”** for a reason that will be explained later.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“You are the king,”** — that is, this dream cannot be interpreted regarding anyone else but you, for you are the one who **“have grown and become strong, and your greatness has reached to the heavens,”**—on account of your ruling star and the fortune above. **“And your dominion”** has extended **“to the ends of the earth.”** And even in the phrase **“your height reached to the heavens,”** there is an allusion to his sin, as it is said, “you said, I will ascend to heaven… yet you shall be brought down to the grave.”

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And that the king saw a watcher and a holy one descending from heaven and saying: Cut down the tree and destroy it,”** — he did not repeat what was said, **“cut off its branches”** and that the beasts and birds would depart from it, since this is a metaphor for his servants, ministers, and all the peoples withdrawing from him; and he did not wish to state this explicitly, but only what would happen to his body. For this is understood on its own—that at the time of his madness, all would abandon him. And after it was said, **“but leave the stump of its roots in the earth,”** it is clear that the kingdom itself would not be destroyed; therefore, this condition applies only during the period of his madness, and it was unnecessary to say so explicitly. He also did not repeat what was said, that his heart would be changed from the heart of a man to that of a beast, for this is included in the phrase **“and his portion will be with the beasts of the field,”**. And he did not say “his portion in the grass of the earth,” as the angel had said, but rather phrased it more generally—to include that his portion would be with them in every respect, that he would be transformed in all aspects into a beast.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“This is the interpretation, O king,”** — that is, what was concluded in the dream—that he would be bound with chains, eat grass, and dwell with beasts—none of this applies to the tree seen in the dream, but rather to a human being. It is therefore clear that this is not part of the dream itself, but its interpretation. Thus, when it says, **“cut down the tree,”** this is interpreted to mean that he will become insane, turn like a beast, and be removed from kingship—this is the cutting down of the tree. Accordingly, this is a dream that is interpreted within the dream itself, and a dream that is repeated; and all of this indicates, as the Sages said, that the decree is firm and imminent. Therefore he says, **“this is the interpretation,”**—that this is the explanation of the tree-dream as revealed within the dream itself, through the concluding statements about being bound with iron and bronze, etc. **“And it is the decree of the Most High,”** — meaning that the decree is firmly decided and near to fulfillment. He further explained that from the first dream of the tree alone, one might have thought that his kingship would be entirely removed, and afterward grow again from its roots through his descendants, like “a shoot shall come forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow from his roots,” referring to his offspring. But from the second dream—which serves as the interpretation of the first, where he is likened to a beast—it becomes clear that this too will be fulfilled in him personally, that he himself will later be restored to his kingdom. Thus he says, **“which has come upon my lord the king,”**—that all of this will occur in him himself. And he proceeds to explain further.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And you shall be driven away from among men,”** — therefore the interpretation does not refer to your kingdom, for the kingdom itself will not be abolished, since your son will reign in your place; rather, it refers to you personally. For only in this sense does it apply that you will be given grass to eat and become like a beast. And the phrase **“and seven times shall pass over you”** means **“until you come to know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men,”**—that in the seventh period you will arrive at this recognition. For each period corresponds to one of the seven planets, until all seven periods are completed; at that point his reason was restored to him, and he recognized that everything comes from the Most High.

###### Malbim on Daniel 4:23:1

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And that which they said,”** — from this he inferred that what was said, **“to leave the stump of its roots in the earth,”** means that the kingdom would remain with him himself; for otherwise it would more naturally suggest that the metaphor referred to the entire kingdom of Babylon—that it would be removed for a time, but its root would remain for his descendants after many days. And he explained at what time the kingdom would be restored to him: **“from the time that you come to know that the heavens rule,”**—from the moment you attain the recognition that God rules and governs, then your kingdom will be restored to you. And he did not interpret the phrase **“and the lowliest of men will be set over it,”** because the main wrath against him was due to the image he made, thinking to nullify the decree of heaven through this act, and to overturn the decree of the Most High regarding the four kingdoms that he had seen in the earlier dream. Therefore he was punished and immediately removed from his kingship, so that he would know that God rules over mankind and that it is not within human power to alter His decrees. And after he recognized that kingship belongs to God—and that his actions with the image had been ineffective—and that God alone rules over kingship, and that in the end, in the latter days, dominion in the Holy Land will belong to one who is now “the lowliest of men,” namely the stone cut without hands—then his kingdom was restored to him. And for this reason Daniel did not wish to mention this matter, so as not to inflame his anger against Israel.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you: redeem your sins through righteousness, and your iniquities through showing mercy to the poor; perhaps there will be a lengthening of your tranquility,”** — Daniel’s advice was itself alluded to in the dream, in what was said: **“there was food in it for all,”** and **“from it all flesh was fed.”** Now, the phrase **“there was food in it for all”** had already been fulfilled, for all abundance was in Babylon and the entire world was sustained from its surplus. But what was added—**“from it all flesh was fed”**—had not yet been fulfilled, for he did not sustain the poor, but rather took from them. Thus, this itself was shown to him in the dream—that he would yet nourish all flesh, in accordance with Daniel’s counsel; and afterward the tree would be cut down. Therefore Daniel saw to advise him to sustain all flesh through acts of charity. He understood that as long as he maintained deeds of righteousness, his tranquility would be prolonged. And he also knew from the words of the dream that the king would not continue to heed this advice for many days. Therefore he said, **“perhaps there will be a lengthening of your tranquility,”**—that it would at least be extended until the time when he would cease giving charity to the poor, at which point the tree would be cut down. And **“sin”** refers to wrongdoing stemming from desire, which can be remedied through righteous actions; while **“iniquity”** refers to distortion of intellect and deliberate denial, which requires showing mercy to the poor for atonement, as this goes beyond ordinary charity.

Whether on account of my strength and might, or on account of the honor and splendor of my greatness—he thought that if such a decree had truly been made against him, some sign would already have appeared in his kingdom: either that his royal house would diminish, or that his strength and majesty would weaken. **“At that very moment the matter was fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar,”** — and the Maharai”a has already explained that this was not, as some say, that he literally turned into an ox in name, essence, and appearance. For if so, how could it be that when he lifted his eyes to heaven his understanding returned to him? And how is it possible for a being to be both human and animal at once? And if he had truly become an ox and his human form had disappeared, how would his kingdom have endured? And why did his servants not rebel, saying: “The king has died, or been broken, or taken captive—there is no one overseeing”? Rather, the true explanation is what Daniel clarified in his interpretation: **“and you shall be driven away from among men,”**—that is, an extreme and extraordinary form of black bile (melancholy) overcame him, to such an extent that he himself despised human company, fled from people, and dwelled alone in the wilderness, eating grass like animals. His appearance became darkened, his form deteriorated, and his hair and nails grew excessively; and his heart, which had previously been wise, departed from him, and within him was the heart of a beast, drawn after animalistic desires. And since everyone still saw him, he was not forgotten as if dead, nor was his kingship entirely removed; rather, his son governed the kingdom in his place.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And at the end of days,”** — after the seven periods, **“I lifted my eyes to heaven,”**—for as long as he imagined himself to be like a beast, he looked toward the earth and walked on all fours; but then he stood upright and looked toward heaven, and his understanding returned to him. Thus it says, **“and my knowledge returned to me,”**—that he realized he was not a beast but a human being, although he had not yet fully recovered his awareness of kingship, but only recognized his own condition and remembered the punishment that had come upon him. **“And I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored the Living One forever,”**—blessing refers to the goodness and abundance that are received from Him through His providence, while praise and honor are attributed even by philosophers who deny providence, because He is the First Cause; however, they would not attribute blessing to Him. The name **“Most High”** refers to Him as the First Cause, while **“the Living One of the world”** refers to Him as the One who oversees and governs the world, like a soul that gives life to a body—His providence is the life-force of the world. Until now, he had thought that as the Most High and First Cause, God deserved praise and honor, but not blessing, because he believed that the governance of the world—by which He is called “the Living One of the world”—had been entrusted to the celestial ministers; thus, they would be the ones to whom blessing was due, since goodness and abundance come through them. But now he realized that the Most High Himself is also the Living One of the world, and therefore worthy of blessing, even though He is the Most High. Thus he said, **“and I blessed the Most High,”**—for the abundance flows directly from the First Cause without intermediary. And likewise, He is worthy of praise and honor even as the Living One of the world, contrary to his earlier view that it was beneath His dignity to oversee lower realms. He further added: **“whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is from generation to generation,”**—in this he expanded upon what he had said earlier, **“His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His dominion is from generation to generation.”** For we have explained that **“kingdom”** refers to governance according to the fixed laws of nature established from the six days of creation, which endure forever without change, while **“dominion”** refers to the disruption of nature and miraculous governance, which varies from generation to generation. But now he understood something new: that even dominion—the miraculous mode of governance—is also constant and enduring, and that even natural governance operates according to generations and deeds. Thus, nature itself is filled with hidden miracles, and the natural order is shaped by merit and human actions—rising or descending accordingly. In truth, the essential governance follows the divine will; and this principle has already been explained in the commentary on Psalms, on the verse “Your kindness, O Hashem, is in the heavens,” where this matter is elaborated in detail.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and He does according to His will in the heavens and on the earth, and there is none who can restrain His hand,”** — for at first he thought that the primary governance followed the celestial order and nature, such that they might obstruct divine providence; that if a wicked person’s fortune and time were favorable, providence would be unable to strike him. But now he saw that providential will rules over all, and all other factors are considered as nothing in comparison.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“At that time my understanding returned to me,”** — then his intellect was restored even in matters of kingship, for at first it had returned only with regard to his personal condition. He explains: **“and for the honor of my kingdom my majesty returned to me,”**—his understanding was restored in matters pertaining to royal honor; and also **“my splendor and radiance returned to me,”**—the royal dignity and appearance returned to his face, which had previously been altered, until his ministers and nobles sought him out, and he was restored to his kingdom, and even greater honor was added to him than he had before. And the Maharai”a has already explained that since he made the image—with the intention of nullifying the decree of God regarding the four kingdoms and to establish eternal dominion for himself—he was punished and removed from his kingship even during his lifetime, so that he would recognize that God’s kingship rules over all. Thus, the three narratives in this book are connected one to another: through the dream of the image, he made the image in the plain of Dura in order to overturn the divine decree; and through this he was punished and removed from his kingdom even during his lifetime. Yet his kingdom was not entirely uprooted, for it had already been decreed through Jeremiah that the nations would serve him, his son, and his grandson. And he was restored to his kingdom in order to make known to mankind the praise of God and His might; therefore he wrote this as an open letter to all peoples, and concluded his words by saying:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt the King of heaven, whose works are truth and whose ways are justice,”** — for he saw that God’s governance operates through providence, and that this providence is conducted according to justice and judgment. **“And those who walk in pride He is able to humble,”** — for He humbled his own pride and the arrogance of his heart, when he had said, “I will ascend to the heavens,” seeking to nullify the decree of the Most High and to establish an eternal kingdom for himself.
