**ויצעק איש אפרים.** לאפרים חרה לו על שגלעד בחרו ראש וקצין לראש בית יוסף, יען שנצחו המלחמה, והם טענו למה לא קרא אותם להלחם, ורצו לשרוף ביתו כי לא הסכימו על נשיאותו כמו שיבאר בפסוק ד', והיה להם הטענה שהיו גדולים ממנשה בבית יוסף, כמו שאמר וישם את אפרים לפני מנשה ועי"כ העלילו עליו.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And the men of Ephraim cried out.** Ephraim was angered that Gilead had chosen a head and commander as leader over the house of Joseph because they had won the war. They argued: Why did you not call us to fight? They even sought to burn his house, for they did not consent to his leadership, as will be explained in verse 4. They claimed precedence over Manasseh within the house of Joseph, as it says, “And he set Ephraim before Manasseh,” and on this basis they brought charges against him.

**ויאמר יפתח.**אמר ג' טענות:

**And Jephthah said.** He advanced three arguments:

א) **איש ריב הייתי אני ועמי ובני עמון**, רק אני בעל הריב כי בני עמון רעצו י"ח שנה את בני גלעד והמלחמה היה מוטל רק עלינו.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
(a) **I and my people had a dispute with the children of Ammon.** It was I who was the party to the dispute, for the children of Ammon had oppressed the people of Gilead for eighteen years, and the obligation of the war rested upon us alone.

ב) **ואזעק** אליכם כל הימים זעקנו ולא באתם להושיענו.

(b) **And I cried out** to you — all those days we cried out, and you did not come to save us.

ג) **ואראה כי אינך מושיע** שאם היית מושיע כבר היה עת לזה מזמן רב, ועי"כ **ואשימה נפשי בכפי**, והייתי בסכנה גדולה וה' נתנם בידי בדרך השגחה, **ולמה עליתם אלי היום הזה להלחם בי**, רצה לומר לעזר לא עליתם כל הזמן העבר, רק להלחם בי עליתם היום הזה?!

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
(c) **And I saw that you were not delivering us,** for had you intended to help, the time for that had long since passed; therefore **I put my life in my hand,** placing myself in great danger, and Hashem delivered them into my hand by providence. **Why then have you come up against me this day to fight against me?** That is to say, to help you did not come all that time — only now you have come up to fight against me?!

**ויקבץ יפתח.** ואחר שראה כי לא רפתה רוחם מדבריו הרכים, **כי אמרו.** מבאר סבת המלחמה שבני אפרים טענו על שהעיזו אנשי גלעד לבחור את השופט כאלו הם עקר בית יוסף, והם טענו לנגדם לאמר **פליטי אפרים אתם**, רצה לומר אפרים הוא עקר השבט ועמו חצי מנשה שלקחו נחלתם אצלו חבל וגורל אחד כמו שאמר בספר יהושע, ואתם **גלעד** שלקחתם מעבר הירדן, פלטים אתם מן השבט, כי היה מקומכם הראוי **בתוך אפרים בתוך מנשה**, רק הלכתם לפלטה אל עבר הירדן, ואיך תעיזו לבחור קצין שוטר ומושל.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And Jephthah gathered.** When he saw that their spirit was not softened by his gentle words — **for they said** — it explains the cause of the war: the children of Ephraim claimed that the men of Gilead had presumptuously chosen a judge as though they were the principal part of the house of Joseph. They argued against them, saying, **“You are fugitives of Ephraim,”** meaning that Ephraim is the primary tribe, together with half of Manasseh, who received their inheritance alongside it as one portion and lot, as stated in the book of Joshua. But you, **Gilead,** who took your possession beyond the Jordan, are fugitives from the tribe, for your proper place was **within Ephraim, within Manasseh;** instead, you went off in flight to the other side of the Jordan. How then do you dare to choose a commander, ruler, and governor?
