## Malbim on Judges Chapter 13

###### Malbim on Judges 13:2:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:2:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:2:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Barren and had not borne.** For it is possible to speak of a barren woman who had previously borne before becoming barren, and it is also possible that one has not borne for some other reason; therefore it repeats the expression.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:4:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:4:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And now, please beware,** of things that naturally cause harm to a pregnant woman; and beyond that, **do not drink**, etc. And what it says, **“anything unclean,”** refers to matters forbidden to a Nazirite.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:5:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:5:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**For behold, you are pregnant.** It is as though you are already pregnant now, such that you must take care immediately.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:5:2
[Malbim on Judges 13:5:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:5:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
And the Sages (Midrash Rabbah, Naso 10:16) said that there was already seminal seed within her, and at the very moment the angel spoke with her she conceived. Thus he first said **“and you shall conceive”** in the future tense, and afterward **“for behold, you are pregnant”** — at that very moment. Therefore it says **“and you are bearing”** (with a ḥolam), a form combining the present with the past reversed, indicating that she was already prepared to give birth.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:6:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:6:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**A man of God came to me,** for she was uncertain whether he was a man or an angel; that is to say, insofar as he was clothed in physical form he was **a man of God**, but in terms of his awe-inspiring presence he was like an angel — and this is what she meant by **“like the appearance of an angel”**, because he was **very awesome.**

###### Malbim on Judges 13:6:2
[Malbim on Judges 13:6:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:6:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And I did not ask him from where he was.** For it was customary to ask a person about his place of origin, and in response he would state his name, as it says, “And Micah said to him, ‘From where do you come?’ and he said, ‘I am a Levite.’”

###### Malbim on Judges 13:7:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:7:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions (7–13): Why did she not relate that he said to her, “Behold, you are barren”? Likewise, why did she not mention “a razor shall not come upon his head,” nor “and he shall begin to save Israel”? Why did the angel come to the woman and not to Manoah himself? And why did Manoah request that he return again to instruct them regarding the conduct of the child, when he had already instructed them, and the angel added nothing in the second appearance beyond what he had said the first time?**

###### Malbim on Judges 13:7:2
[Malbim on Judges 13:7:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:7:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he said to me, “Behold, you are pregnant.”** As for his statement to her, “You are barren,” she did not relate it for the sake of peace (Vayikra Rabbah, Tzav 9). Likewise, she did not mention, “a razor shall not come upon his head,” because this is included in what she said, “for the child shall be a Nazirite to God.” Nor did she repeat, “and he shall begin to save Israel,” since at that time the Philistines ruled, and she feared lest the matter become known and they kill the child who would be born. She added, **“until the day of his death,”** though the angel did not state this explicitly, for he knew that before his death he would profane his Nazirite status.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:8:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:8:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And instruct us what we shall do for the child who will be born.** That is to say, the angel explained only the conduct required of the woman, but did not teach them the conduct required of the child (especially since she had not told him that a razor should not come upon his head). Therefore he requested that the angel come again to instruct them regarding the child’s conduct — particularly since this was a new form of Nazirite status (for Samson’s Nazirite vow differed in its laws, in that he became impure through contact with the dead, yet did not lighten his hair with a razor).

###### Malbim on Judges 13:12:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:12:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Now let your words come to pass — what shall be the rule for the child?** That is to say, in the first instance you declared the rule concerning the woman and her conduct; now instruct us: (a) **the rule of the child** — how he is to conduct himself; and (b) **his deeds** — since you designated him even before birth, he will surely perform great things; therefore inform us of his actions and mighty deeds.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:13:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:13:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Of all that I said to the woman, she shall observe.** That is to say, there is no need for me to inform you of the rule for the child, for you may ask those who know the law and they will teach you the laws of his Nazirite status (and therefore they said that Manoah was an ignoramus); I came only to warn the woman, for that was something new.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:13:2
[Malbim on Judges 13:13:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:13:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
As for the reason the angel did not come to Manoah: Abarbanel explains that she was more prepared than he to behold the angel. It may also be said that Samson’s Nazirite status was not a vow subject to annulment, for it was established by the angel; had it been instituted by the father, it would have been a regular vow — since a father may place his son under a Nazirite vow — and its law would have been different.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:15:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:15:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:15:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Please let us detain you.** Since he did not know whether he was a prophet or an angel, he said: if you are a prophet, let us detain you and you may dine with us; and if you are an angel, **we shall prepare before you a kid of the goats** as an offering.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:16:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:16:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:16:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
And he answered, **“If you detain me”** for a meal, **I will not eat; but if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to Hashem,** for one who sacrifices to any god other than Hashem alone shall be devoted to destruction. It explains that Manoah was uncertain and did not clearly know that he was an angel of Hashem; therefore he hesitated in his words, whether to detain him for a meal or to bring an offering.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:17:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:17:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:17:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And Manoah said… What is your name?** That is to say, Manoah, who thought he was a prophet of God, assumed that a prophet would not trouble himself to go and prophesy unless he expected some reward — money or food — or sought honor, so that when his words came to pass he would be regarded as a prophet. Since Manoah had wished to invite him to a meal and he refused to eat, he still supposed that perhaps he acted for the sake of honor; but this would not be possible unless he disclosed his name, so that when his prophecy would be fulfilled they could publicize that he was the seer and prophet. Therefore he said, “What is your name?” so that when **your word comes to pass** and your prophecy is fulfilled, **we will honor you.**

###### Malbim on Judges 13:18:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:18:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:18:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he said… Why do you ask my name?** I do not seek honor or glory from man, for I am an angel. Moreover, my name is **wondrous** — unknown to those who dwell in flesh. And since an angel’s name corresponds to his mission, and he was sent at this moment to perform wonders, as it says, “and he does wondrously,” therefore at this time his name was Wondrous.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:18:2
[Malbim on Judges 13:18:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:18:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
And the Sages, in Bamidbar Rabbah (Naso 10:19), explained that his name was “Wondrous” in connection with the Nazirite vow, as it is written, “When a man shall clearly utter a vow of a Nazirite” (ki yafli lindor neder).

###### Malbim on Judges 13:19:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:19:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:19:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he took.** Then he offered it to Hashem, as it had been said, “offer it to Hashem.” Thus it says, **“and he offered it upon the rock to Hashem, and he did wondrously.”** The angel performed wonders, bringing down fire upon the altar, and they saw this with their own eyes.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:20:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:20:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:20:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he ascended… in the flame of the altar.** This too they saw with their own eyes. It is clear that seeing the angel at the moment of his departure was a far greater matter than seeing him while he was clothed in physical form; for when he casts off the garment in which he had materialized and returns to his spiritual state, the eye of flesh cannot behold him. As it is said (II Kings 2:10), “If you see me taken from you, it shall be so for you,” for at the moment of his being taken from the physical, Elisha could not see him unless he possessed a double portion of his spirit. Therefore he said, “We shall surely die, for we have seen God.”

###### Malbim on Judges 13:21:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:21:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:21:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And the angel of Hashem did not appear again… then Manoah knew that he was the angel of Hashem.** For until that point there still remained some doubt in his mind — perhaps he was a wonder-working man performing extraordinary acts, and he hoped that he would descend from the altar and return to them. But once he vanished from their sight, they knew that he was an angel and had returned to his place.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:22:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:22:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:22:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he said… “We shall surely die.”** I have already explained the reason for this fear above (6:22), in connection with Gideon.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:23:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:23:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:23:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And his wife said to him.** She gave him three reasons: (a) **If Hashem had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted from our hand a burnt offering and a meal offering,** for that is a sign of favor and love, not of anger and punishment. (b) **Nor would He have shown us all these wonders;** does one perform miracles for those who are to be slain? (c) **And at this time He would not have announced to us such a message** — one that necessarily implies that I shall live and bear a son.

###### Malbim on Judges 13:25:1
[Malbim on Judges 13:25:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/13:25:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**To stir him.** That the spirit of might would begin to move him from time to time, **in the camp of Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol**; for we find Zorah and Eshtaol listed in the territory of Judah (Joshua 15:33) and also in the territory of Dan (Joshua 19:42). Thus it clarifies that this was in the portion of Dan.
