###### Malbim on Judges 17:1:1

**ושמו מיכיהו.** בתחלה היה צדיק וקראו מיכיהו, ואחר שעבד ע"ז קראו מיכה (ולכן אמר **ושמו מיכיהו** שהרשעים הם קודמים לשמם, כמ"ש חז"ל (רות רבה ד, ג) נבל שמו כו'):

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And his name was Micah.** At first he was righteous and was called Mikhayehu; afterward, when he served idolatry, he was called Micah. Therefore it says, **“and his name was Mikhayehu,”** for with the wicked their deeds precede their name — as the Sages said (Ruth Rabbah 4:3), “Nabal was his name,” and the like.

**השאלות**
**(ב) למה כפל הנה הכסף אתי אני לקחתיו?**

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions (2): Why does it repeat, “Behold, the silver is with me; I took it”?**

###### Malbim on Judges 17:2:2

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And you uttered a curse.** She pronounced an oath-curse against the thief. **And you also said in my hearing, “Behold, the silver is with me,”** meaning that you implied you suspected me — that the silver was with me — and thus the intent of that curse fell upon me. I confess to you **that I took it,** and by this I will rectify both the sin of theft and the curse. (It is explained in Choshen Mishpat 71:7 that one who imposes a curse should not say “whoever stole it,” but rather “whoever has the stolen item in his possession and does not return it”; therefore, in the curse she uttered she did not phrase it as “who took the silver,” but as “the silver is with him and he does not return it,” for the intent is not to curse for the past, but to compel the return of what is hers, as the Shach explains there.) **And his mother said, “Blessed be my son to Hashem.”** He passed from the category of cursed to the category of blessed.

###### Malbim on Judges 17:3:1
[Malbim on Judges 17:3:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:3:1)

**השאלות**
**(ג - ד) למה אמר ב"פ וישב את אלף ומאה הכסף לאמו, וישב את הכסף לאמו? והלא היא הקדישה כל הכסף ולבסוף לא נתנה לצורף רק מאתים כסף? היא אמרה מידי לבני לעשות פסל ואח"כ נתנה היא לצורף, לא מיכה?**

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions (3–4): Why does it say twice, “he returned the eleven hundred pieces of silver to his mother,” and again, “he returned the silver to his mother”? Did she not consecrate all the silver, yet in the end gave only two hundred pieces to the silversmith? She said, “from my hand for my son to make a graven image,” but afterward she herself gave it to the silversmith — not Micah?**

###### Malbim on Judges 17:3:2
[Malbim on Judges 17:3:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:3:2)

**וישב.** ותיכף השיב את הגניבה, וזה מורה שהיה ירא ה': **ותאמר אמו הקדש הקדשתי את הכסף לה'.** והתניתי שני תנאים בהקדש הזה, א] **מידי לבני**, ר"ל שאמסרהו לבני שיהיה הוא הגזבר עליו. ב] **לעשות פסל ומסכה. ועתה אשיבנו לך**, כיון שאתה הגזבר לעשות הפסל:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he returned.** He immediately restored what he had stolen, which indicates that he feared Hashem. **And his mother said, “I had fully consecrated the silver to Hashem.”** I stipulated two conditions in this consecration: (a) **from my hand to my son,** meaning that I would entrust it to my son so that he would serve as its treasurer; (b) **to make a graven image and a molten image. And now I return it to you,** since you are the treasurer to make the image.

###### Malbim on Judges 17:4:1
[Malbim on Judges 17:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:4:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he returned the silver to his mother.** It relates that Micah did not wish to serve as treasurer for idolatry, for he did not agree to make a graven image and a molten image. Certainly he reasoned with her not to do so, especially since according to the law the consecration did not take effect, as it was not yet in her possession (as stated in Bava Kamma 70a). As a result, she partially relented and did not make the image from the entire sum, but only from two hundred pieces of silver, and the silversmith made the image from them. **And it was in the house of Micah** — for although they had not yet worshiped it, he had already transgressed the word of Hashem by having the image in his house, violating the prohibition “You shall have no other gods,” which, according to Rashi (Exodus 20:3), serves as a warning even against keeping an idol in one’s home.

###### Malbim on Judges 17:5:1
[Malbim on Judges 17:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:5:1)

**והאיש מיכה.** מאז עבירה גוררת עבירה ויצא מדחי אל דחי (לכן כינה שמו מיכה לרוע), עד שעשה **לו בית אלהים** בית מיוחד לעבודת הפסל, ואחר כך עשה **גם אפוד ותרפים** מכיסו, ואח"כ **וימלא את יד אחד מבניו** כו' **לכהן**, לעבודת נכר:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And the man Micah.** From then on, one transgression led to another, and he went from bad to worse (therefore his name is called Micah, in a negative sense), until he made for himself **a house of gods** — a special house for the service of the idol. Afterward he made **also an ephod and teraphim** from his own funds, and then **he ordained one of his sons** to serve **as priest** in the service of idolatry.

###### Malbim on Judges 17:6:1
[Malbim on Judges 17:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:6:1)

**בימים ההם.** ר"ל אל תתפלא שישראל החרישו לזאת, כי לא היה אז שר ושופט בארץ:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**In those days.** That is to say, do not be surprised that Israel remained silent about this, for at that time there was no prince or judge in the land.

###### Malbim on Judges 17:7:1
[Malbim on Judges 17:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:7:1)

**השאלות**
**(ז) למה כפל מבית לחם יהודה והוא גר שם?**

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions (7): Why does it repeat, “from Bethlehem in Judah,” and “he sojourned there”?**

###### Malbim on Judges 17:7:2
[Malbim on Judges 17:7:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:7:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And there was a young man.** This young man was from Bethlehem in Judah — for on his mother’s side he was from the family of Judah, while on his father’s side **he was a Levite**. Since the Levites had no portion in the land, he **dwelt in his mother’s place**, for he had no inheritance through his father. And according to what is stated (Bava Batra 109b) that the mother’s family is not called a “family,” he nevertheless inherited his mother’s portion, as she was an heiress of an inheritance; and in this respect he was regarded as of the family of Judah, since the inheritance was in the territory of Judah.

###### Malbim on Judges 17:8:1
[Malbim on Judges 17:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:8:1)

**השאלות**
**(ח) למה כפל וילך מהעיר מבית לחם?**

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions (8): Why does it repeat, “and he went from the city, from Bethlehem”?**

###### Malbim on Judges 17:8:2
[Malbim on Judges 17:8:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:8:2)

**וילך האיש מהעיר מבית לחם יהודה.** יען לא מצא שם פרנסתו הלך משם, ובאר שלא הלך אל מה שאליו, רק יצא ממה שממנו, הלך מעיר לעיר לבקש מקום מחיה, וז"ש **לגור באשר ימצא**, ובזה סבב **הר אפרים עד בית מיכה**, לא באשר חשב ימצא שם מקום לפרנסתו, רק **לעשות דרכו** כאורח נטה ללון:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And the man went from the city, from Bethlehem in Judah.** Since he did not find his livelihood there, he left; and it clarifies that he did not set out toward a particular destination, but merely departed from where he had been — going from city to city seeking a place to live, as it says, **“to sojourn wherever he might find.”** In this way he came **to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah** — not because he intended to find sustenance there, but **to make his way**, like a traveler who turns aside to lodge.

###### Malbim on Judges 17:9:1
[Malbim on Judges 17:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:9:1)

**מאין תבוא.** כי חשב שיש לו מקום קבוע, והשיב אין לי מקום, רק **אנכי הולך לגור באשר אמצא**:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“From where do you come?”** For he assumed that he had a fixed residence; and he replied, I have no established place — rather, **I am going to sojourn wherever I may find.**

###### Malbim on Judges 17:10:1
[Malbim on Judges 17:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:10:1)

**השאלות**
**(י) מ"ש וילך הלוי משמע שהלך מאתו ואיך אמר ויואל הלוי לשבת?**

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions (10): The phrase “and the Levite went” implies that he departed from him; how then does it say afterward, “and the Levite was willing to dwell”?**

###### Malbim on Judges 17:10:2
[Malbim on Judges 17:10:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:10:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And Micah said to him.** He told him: since in any case you are wandering and have no occupation or livelihood, here you will gain in three ways: (a) **“Dwell with me”** — here you will remain and not wander. (b) The occupation will be an honorable one befitting your status as a Levite — **“and you shall be to me a father and a priest.”** (c) In terms of wages, **“I will give you ten pieces of silver for the year,”** that is, annually; **and an allowance of clothing,** meaning garments appropriate to your dignity; and also **your sustenance,** provisions for food. **And the Levite went.** It relates that at first he did not want to hire himself out for idolatry, and he departed from him.

###### Malbim on Judges 17:11:1
[Malbim on Judges 17:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:11:1)

ואח"כ, **ויואל הלוי.** נתרצה: **לשבת את האיש.** ר"ל לא להיות לאב ולכהן רק לשבת בביתו איזה ימים: **ויהי הנער כאחד מבניו.** אוכל על שולחנו, ואח"כ ע"י שישב בבית רשע נגרר אחריו:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
And afterward, **and the Levite consented.** He agreed **to dwell with the man,** that is, not to serve as a father and priest, but merely to stay in his house for some time. **And the young man was like one of his sons,** eating at his table; and later, by remaining in the house of a wicked man, he was drawn after him.

###### Malbim on Judges 17:12:1
[Malbim on Judges 17:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/17:12:1)

**וימלא מיכה** כו' **ויהי לו** כו' **לכהן ויהי בבית מיכה.** ר"ל ואז נעשה תושב בביתו להיות שם תמיד, כי עד עתה היה שם רק לפי שעה. ומיכה נתן ע"ז שבח להפסל:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And Micah ordained** him… **and he became to him**… **a priest, and he was in the house of Micah.** That is to say, from then on he became a permanent resident in his house, to remain there continually; for until that point he had been there only temporarily. And Micah attributed this success as praise to the idol.
