###### Malbim on Judges 3:1:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:1:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:1:1)

**ואלה הגוים.** עתה חושב בפרטות הגוים שהניח ה' לנסות את ישראל אשר לא ידעו מלחמות כנען ולא ראו אותם בעיניהם.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And these are the nations.** He now enumerates specifically the nations whom Hashem left to test Israel — the generation that had not known the wars of Canaan nor witnessed them firsthand.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:2:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:2:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:2:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Only.** That is to say, the purpose of the test had two aspects: (a) “Only in order that the coming generations might know” — those who would be required to learn warfare and the tactics of battle, which the earlier generations had not known, since the Canaanites had been driven out before them by Hashem through miracles. Through this they would recognize the power of the miracle and understand what they had caused by their wrongful deeds, as it says, “O God, we have heard with our ears… the work You performed in their days… for not by their sword did they inherit the land…” (Psalms 44). And the word “only” indicates that for this very purpose He left them. Therefore He left them…

###### Malbim on Judges 3:3:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:3:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:3:1)

**חמשת סרני פלשתים וכו'.** שמהם כבשו בני יהודה עזה ועקרון ואשקלון אחר מות יהושע ומהם שלא כבשו והיו צריכים ללחום עמהם.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**The five rulers of the Philistines, etc.** From among them Judah took Gaza, Ekron, and Ashkelon after Joshua’s death; but some they did not conquer and thus had to continue fighting against them.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:4:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:4:1)

**ויהיו.** והתכלית השני היה לנסות בם את ישראל לדעת הישמעו את מצות ה' לבל יתחתנו עמהם, ובל יעבדו את אלהיהם.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they were.** The second objective was to test Israel by means of them, to see whether they would heed Hashem’s commandments — refraining from intermarriage and from worshiping their gods.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:5:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:5:1)

**ובני ישראל.** לא עמדו בשני הנסיונות האלה, עם הא' שילמדו מלחמה לא לחמו עמהם רק ישבו בקרבם וכרתו עמהם ברית, ועם הב' בל יתחתנו.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And the children of Israel.** They failed in both of these tests. Regarding the first — that they should learn to wage war — they did not battle them, but instead lived among them and entered into covenants with them. And regarding the second — that they should refrain from intermarriage…

###### Malbim on Judges 3:6:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:6:1)

**ויקחו את בנותיהם וכו' וגם עבדו את אלהיהם.** (ודברי קרובים בזה לדברי מהרי"א בכל המאמר):

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they took their daughters… and they also worshiped their gods.** (In this whole exposition my interpretation aligns closely with that of the Abarbanel.)

###### Malbim on Judges 3:7:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:7:1)

**ויעשו.** הנה עד הנה הציע הקדמה כוללת לכל ספורי הספר מה שנעשה מן אחרי מות יהושע עד כל ימי השופטים, ועתה שב לספר הפרטים, ענין כל שופט ושופט והנעשה בימיו, יאמר כי בני ישראל החלו לעשות הרע בעיני ה', עד ששכחוהו ועד שעבדו את הבעלים. ועי"כ...

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they did.** Up to this point he has presented a general introduction to all the narratives of the book — what occurred from after the death of Joshua throughout all the days of the Judges. Now he returns to recount the particulars: the story of each judge and what took place in his days. He says that the children of Israel began to do evil in the sight of Hashem, until they forgot Him and until they served the Baals. And through this…

###### Malbim on Judges 3:8:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:8:1)

**ויחר אף ה' כו' וימכרם ביד כושן.** (כמו שאמר למעלה ב' מן פסוק יא עד טז). ואח"כ...

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And the anger of Hashem burned… and He sold them into the hand of Cushan.** (As was explained above in chapter 2, from verse 11 through 16.) And afterward…

###### Malbim on Judges 3:9:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:9:1)

**ויזעקו כו' ויקם ה' מושיע.** כמו שאמר שם מן פסוק יז והלאה.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they cried out… and Hashem raised up a deliverer.** As explained above from verse 17 and following.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:12:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:12:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they again did evil.** As was stated there: “And when the judge died, they returned and corrupted themselves.” “And Hashem strengthened Eglon…” — because they did evil; that is to say, Eglon was weak in himself, and according to natural circumstances they would have prevailed over him. But because they did evil, Hashem strengthened him until he defeated them through divine providence, as it says there (2:15), “Wherever they went out, the hand of Hashem was against them for harm.”

And also, by doing evil they caused him to be strengthened, for by this he incited their neighbors to mistreat them, saying: “Their God has forsaken them and no longer goes out with their armies, for they have rebelled against Him.” And through this…

###### Malbim on Judges 3:15:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:15:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:15:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they cried out… and He raised up for them a deliverer.** As was stated in the introduction (above 2:17). And behold, Othniel judged them also in matters of religion; therefore it says, “a deliverer for the children of Israel, and he delivered them.” But Ehud only saved them from distress; therefore it says, “for them a deliverer,” for the Spirit of Hashem did not come upon him as it did upon Othniel. Rather, it was through his being left-handed, etc. — that is to say:

(a) Because he was left-handed, he was able to conceal the sword on his right side, and they did not detect it, since it is not customary to grasp a sword on the right side in that manner.

(b) And because they sent tribute by his hand, he found opportunity to approach the king.

And it explains that this was by virtue of his being left-handed.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:16:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:16:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:16:1)

עשה לו חרב משני פיות שתדקור היטב וגמד ארכה בל תתראה.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
He fashioned for himself a two-edged dagger to ensure effective penetration, and he made it short so that it would not be seen.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:16:2
[Malbim on Judges 3:16:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:16:2)

**ויחגר כו' על ירך ימינו.** כי שמש בשמאלו, וע"י ששלחו בידו מנחה.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he strapped it… on his right thigh.** Since he was left-handed; and because they sent the tribute by him.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:17:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:17:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:17:1)

**ויקרב וכו'.** ומ"ש ועגלון איש בריא הוא הוצעה לפסוק כב, (שהיה איש שמן, כמו עשרה בקר בריאים):

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he came near, etc.** And the phrase “Now Eglon was a robust man” is an introduction to what is stated in verse 22 — meaning that he was corpulent, as in the expression “ten fattened oxen.”

###### Malbim on Judges 3:18:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:18:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:18:1)

**וישלח.** הלך ללוותם, ועשה זה, א) בל יהיו גם הם בסכנה, ב) בל ירגישו בו אחר שהלך וחזר כאילו שכח דבר.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he sent.** He accompanied them on their way, and he did so for two reasons: first, that they themselves would not be endangered; and second, so that they would not become suspicious when he came back, as if he had merely forgotten something.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:19:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:19:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:19:1)

**ויצאו.** עגלון היה בפרוזדור, ומשם יצאו האנשים, ויען שאין דרך שיתקרב איש אל המלך נכנס עגלון להחדר הפנימי, וזה שאמר –

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they went out.** Eglon was in the antechamber, and from there the men went out. And since it is not customary for anyone to approach the king, Eglon entered the inner chamber; and this is what it says —

###### Malbim on Judges 3:20:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:20:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:20:1)

**והוא ישב וכו' לבדו.** רצה לומר מובדל בפני עצמו, ואהוד בא והתקרב אליו ואמר: דבר אלהים לי אליך ויקם, ובעודו טרוד בקימה וישלח אהוד וכו'.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he was sitting… alone.** That is to say, separated by himself. And Ehud came and drew near to him and said, “I have a message from God for you.” And he rose; and while he was occupied with rising, Ehud reached out…

###### Malbim on Judges 3:21:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:21:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:21:1)

**ותהי עליו רוח ה'.** א) רוח משפט וגבורה לשפוט את ישראל ולהשיבם אל דרכי ה', ב) וע"י ששבו אל משפטי ה' אמת יצא למלחמה וה' עזרו, ולא לבד עתה, רק ותעז ידו בהחלט. עד -

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And the Spirit of Hashem came upon him.** (a) A spirit of justice and courage to judge Israel and to restore them to the ways of Hashem; (b) and through their return to the true ordinances of Hashem, he went out to war and Hashem helped him — not only at that moment, but his power prevailed completely. Until —

###### Malbim on Judges 3:21:2
[Malbim on Judges 3:21:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:21:2)

ששקטה הארץ ארבעים שנה וזה במדרגה שאמר למעלה (ב' יח) והושיעם מיד אויביהם כל ימי השופט. וימת וכו'.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Thus the land was at peace for forty years, which is the category described above (2:18): “He delivered them from their enemies all the days of the judge.” And he died, etc.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:22:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:22:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:22:1)

**כי לא שלף בל יטנפו בגדיו.** ויצא הפרשדונה וע"י הסרחון טעו עבדיו שמסיך את רגליו,

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**For he did not withdraw the blade, so that his garments would not be stained.** And the excrement came forth; and because of the odor, his servants thought that he was covering his feet.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:22:2
[Malbim on Judges 3:22:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:22:2)

(ויש מפרשים: הפרשדונה - שיצא למקום שעומדים הפרשים. אבל ממ"ש ויצא אהוד המסדרונה מבואר שויצא הראשונה אינו על אהוד וכן ת"י, והמלה מורכבת פרש שדונה.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
(And some interpret “parshdonah” as meaning that he went out to the area where the cavalry stood. However, since it says, “And Ehud went out by the vestibule,” it is evident that the first “and he went out” does not refer to Ehud — and so the Targum understands it. The word itself is compound: “peresh” (excrement) and “shdonah.”)

###### Malbim on Judges 3:23:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:23:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:23:1)

ונעל דלתות החדר הפנימי וע"י שלא היה איש בחיצון, חשבו שהמלך נעל הדלת (ופירוש ונעל במנעול, והמסדרונה - היינו אכסדרה שלפני הבית):

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
And he secured the doors of the inner room; and because there was no one in the outer chamber, they thought that the king himself had locked the door. (“He locked” indicates fastening with a bolt; and “the vestibule” means the portico or outer hall before the house.)

###### Malbim on Judges 3:24:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:24:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:24:1)

**ועבדיו באו אל הפרוזדור.** אך מסיך כמו מסך בציר"י, סוכך רגליו.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And his servants came to the outer hall.** And the word “mesikh” (vocalized with a tzeirei vowel) means “covering his feet.”

###### Malbim on Judges 3:24:2
[Malbim on Judges 3:24:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:24:2)

וכן הוא במשנה: כל המסיך רגליו טעון טבילה.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
And thus it is taught in the Mishnah: “Anyone who ‘covers his feet’ must immerse.”

###### Malbim on Judges 3:25:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:25:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:25:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they waited until they were ashamed.** There is a distinction between the terms “lingering” (mithmahmeah), “delaying” (boshesh), and “being late” (achar). “Lingering” is the opposite of haste — one is not quick and eager, but delays. “Delaying” refers to tarrying longer than is appropriate. “Being late” refers to arriving after an established time. And “bosh,” from the hollow verbs, is related to “boshesh,” from the doubled verbs.

At first they waited during his lingering, for they thought that he was covering his feet, and it is customary to linger and delay. But afterward, when he delayed beyond the proper measure, they became ashamed — and then they opened the door with a key. But…

###### Malbim on Judges 3:26:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:26:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:26:1)

**ואהוד נמלט כבר עד התמהמהם.** שהוא שיעור שיתמהמהו כשיעור הראוי ולא חשב שיתבוששו יותר משיעור הראוי, ומהר להימלט בעוד שיתמהמהו כשיעור הראוי.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And Ehud had already fled while they were lingering.** He calculated only the customary delay, not expecting that they would hesitate beyond the proper measure. Thus he made his escape within the normal interval of their waiting.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:27:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:27:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:27:1)

**ויאסוף אליו את בני עמון וכו'.** ותחלה הכה אותם במלחמה, ואח"כ לקח מאתם עיר התמרים, שיריחו היה אסור לבנותה ובנו עיר אצלה ולא רצו לקראה בשם יריחו שזה גם כן אסור וקראוהו בשם עיר התמרים ע"ש התמרים שגדלו בה, וחיאל בית האלי נענש על שבנה את יריחו במקומה הראשון וקראה בשם יריחו.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he assembled to himself the children of Ammon, etc.** First he defeated them in war, and afterward he seized from them the City of Palms. Since Jericho was under a ban not to be rebuilt, they constructed a nearby settlement but refrained from naming it Jericho — which was likewise prohibited — and instead called it the City of Palms, after the palm trees that flourished there. Hiel the Bethelite was later punished for rebuilding Jericho on its original site and restoring its former name.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:27:2
[Malbim on Judges 3:27:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:27:2)

ואח"כ **ויעבדו והיו לו למס.**

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
And afterward, **they were subjugated and became subject to tribute under him.**

###### Malbim on Judges 3:28:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:28:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:28:1)

**ולא נתנו איש לעבר.** שמואב היה ביריחו עיר התמרים בעבר הירדן מזה.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they permitted no one to pass over.** Since Moab was stationed at Jericho, the City of Palms, on this side of the Jordan.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:30:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:30:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:30:1)

**ותכנע מואב ביום ההוא.** לא היתה התשועה כל ימיו רק ביום ההוא לבד (כמו שאמר דבורה בשירתה בימי שמגר חדלו ארחות) רק היה תשועה מועטת שלא יהיו עוד עבדים.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And Moab was humbled on that day.** The salvation did not last throughout his lifetime, but only for that day (as Deborah declares in her song: “In the days of Shamgar the roads were deserted”). It was only a partial deliverance — sufficient to free them from servitude.

###### Malbim on Judges 3:31:1
[Malbim on Judges 3:31:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Judges/r/3:31:1)

**ואחריו היה שמגר כו' ויושע גם הוא.** וכ"ז תשועה מועטת, באופן שבעת ההיא היה כצד הראשון שאמר בהקדמת הספר (ב' יז) וגם אל שופטיהם לא שמעו שלכן לא כתיב בו וישפוט את ישראל (כנ"ל טו).

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And after him was Shamgar… and he also saved.** This too was only a partial salvation, reflecting the first pattern described in the book’s introduction (2:17): “Even their judges they did not heed.” Hence it does not say of him, “He judged Israel” (as noted above, v. 15).
