**וירד מצרימה אנוס על פי דיבור.** ולכאורה יש להבין דהא מפורש בקרא שאמר השם אל תירא מרדה מצרים אנכי ארד עמך וכו' דנ"ל דבזוהר פ' ויחי הקשה למה ירא יעקב לרדת מצרים הא ידע דצריכין בניו להיות בשעבוד מצרים ותי' דירא שמא יקברוהו שם ועו' שמא לא ירד השכינה בארץ טמאה עד שהבטיחו הקב"ה ואמר אל תירא מרדה מצרימה אנכי ארד עמך ואנכי אעלך. ובס' יונת אלם תי' שהבטיחו הקב"ה שלא ימות עד שראה ס' ריבוי מיוצאי חלציו דכתיב אל תירא מרדה מצרים כי לגוי גדול אשימך שם. אשימך דייקי שתהא עיניו רואו' וזהו שאמר יוסף להחיו' עם רב והיו כולם בני תורה עיין בי"ר פ' ויגש. וזהו אנוס עפ"י הדיבור כלו' שהי' ניח' לו האונס משום שהדיבור הבטיחו לראו' ס' ריבוי בני תורה וזהו שאמ' הכתוב וירד מצרימה ויגר שם במתי מעט. ולמה לא התפלל יעקב שלא ירד למצרימה לזה מפר' הקרא ויהי שם לגוי גדול עצו' ורב מדייק ויהי ולא כתיב ויהיו שם אלא דקאי על יעקב שראה בעיניו ס' ריבוי:

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan:**
**He went down to Egypt:** We have already seen that God reassured Jacob that he would go down to Egypt with him. But why was Jacob afraid? He knew that it was destined that his descendents would be slaves in Egypt before they were redeemed. The Zohar¹²⁹ explains that he was afraid that his family would bury him in Egypt instead of returning him to the land of Canaan. He was also afraid that the divine presence would not accompany his family to Egypt, an impure land. God therefore reassured Jacob not to worry – that He would accompany him there. According to Rabbi Menachem Azarya of Fanot God promised Jacob that he would not die before he witnessed that he had 600,000 descendents in Egypt.¹³⁰

**ויגר שם מלמד וכו'** כי דעת של יעקב שלא יהיו בשיעבוד ועינו רק דרך דירה בארץ לא להם. וגם שלא להשתקע בטומאה ח"ו. וגם לא רצה לגלות זאת לפרעה שירד כדי להיות בניו בגלות לכך אמרו לפרעה לגור בארץ באנו כי אין מרעה לצאן אשר לעבדך כי כבד הרעב בארץ כנען ואוכלין הבני אד' החציר ועשה הארץ משא"כ במצרים דיש שבר והניחו צימח אדמה לבהמה כ"כ הרמב"ן בחומ' והראי' שלא ירדו להשתקע דאם היו דעתם לשבת שם הרבה שנים יותר ראוי' הי' לפזר בכל ארץ מצרי' כדי שיהי' להם רווחה ומקומו' גדולות לסחור בארץ רחבת ידים. אבל עיקר הכוונה להיות יחד כדי שבקל יהיו מכונסים לעלות מן הארץ ויהיו כולם יחד בארץ גושן ועתה ישבו (לשון עכבה כמו ותשב בקדש ברנע) נא עבדיך בארץ גושן כדי שלא יתערבו עם שאר מצרי' ועו' שארץ גושן נתן פרעה לשרה אמנו כדאי' במדר' ועו' דאי' ארץ גושן הוא רעמסס ועיין בי"ר סוף פ' ויגש. וא"כ הי' זה שתי בקשות לכך כתיב נא במקרא זה. כי על לגור בארץ כבר נתן פרעה רשו' ליוסף. אבל על ארץ גושן בקשו עכשיו. וכתי' ויאמר פרעה אל יוסף לאמ' ר"ל לכרוז בכל מלכותו אביך ואחיך באו אליך ליטול שררה כמותך ולא להשתעבד בהם ושמתם שרי מקנה על אשר לי שיהיו השבטי' שולטי' על שר המזלו' שהוא טלה כ"כ כנפי יונה והביאו י"ר סוף ויגש. ובסיבת צאן ירדו לגושן. ובסיבת צאן קחו ומשכו לכם צאן יצאו ממצרים:

**Rabbi Mark Greenspan:**
**And He sojourned there**: Jacob hoped that his family would not suffer from subjugation and oppression but that they would simply be sojourners in a foreign land. He also didn’t want his family to become too settled in an impure land. That is why he said to Pharaoh, “We have come to sojourn in the land because there is no pasturage in Canaan, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan.” This is what Nachmanides writes. If it had been their intention to remain in Egypt a long time, they would have spread throughout the land and become more assimilated in the country. They remained within a small prescribed area so that when the time came to return to Canaan it would be easy to organize the return trip. That is why all the people lived in the land of Goshen.
**Now let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen**: Jacob wanted his family to dwell together in Goshen so that they wouldn’t intermingle with the rest of Egypt. Also, the land of Goshen technically belonged to his family because it was given to Sarah by Pharaoh during Abraham’s brief sojourn in the land of Egypt many years before. ¹³¹ So Jacob made two requests of Pharaoh; the first, to remain in Egypt and second, to dwell in the land of Goshen. Pharaoh had already given Joseph permission to allow his family to remain in Egypt. Jacob now asked to dwell in Goshen. 
“Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “As regards your father and brothers…settle…in the best part of the land…put them in charge of my live stock.”¹³² We see here that the Israelites went down to Goshen so that they could care for Pharaoh’s flocks. Since they were charged with caring for his flocks, they ruled over the lamb, which was considered one of the gods of Egypt. We learn that the Israelites went down to Goshen because of the flock and they left Egypt because of the flock, as it is written, “Go, pick out lambs for your family and slaughter the Passover offering.”¹³³ and *Kanfei Yona*(Rabbi Menachem Azarya of Fano)
