**דבר** מפני ששמו ישראל לרועי סוסים וגמלים חמורים בקר וצאן לכך בא עליהם הדבר והרג כל מה שרעו ישראל עד שלא מצאו ישראל בהמה שירעו כ"ה בילקוט פ' וארא ובזה מיושב מה שהקשה רש"י מאין הי' להם בהמות במכות ברד הא כבר כתיב בדבר וימת כל מקנה מצרי' דלא נגזרה הגזרה אלא על אותן שבשדות עכ"ל ולפי דעת המדרש ניחא דלא מתו רק מה שרעו ישראל אבל מה שרעו המצרים בעצמם לא מתו:

***Dever* – Pestilence**: God struck the livestock because the Egyptians forced the people of Israel to care for their livestock.²²³ Yet if God struck down the livestock during this plague, how is it that livestock were struck down again during the plague of hail?²²⁴ During the plague of pestilence only those livestock the Israelites cared for were affected; the rest of the livestock in the fields were struck down during the plague of hail.
