**ומה שיהיה מן הדברים על הדרך כו'**ר"ל אם יראה האדם שיתחדשו ויתהוו דברים חדשים או זרים בעולם למשל שזה נתעשר וזה נעשה עני או כיוצא אל תתמה על החפץ ותאמר שבדרך מקרה הוא מחמת השתדלותו או רפיונו גרמה להם כי הכל הוא גזירה מלפניו רק שיש הרבה שלוחים למקום והם הסבות והמצועים שבהם ועל ידיהם נגמר כל דבר לקיים גזירות המלך הקב"ה אבל אין בסבות שום כח להרבות או למעט כאשר נראה בגרגרים כשרוצה ה' להרבות זרעו של אחד תצמיח תבואתו בברכה מרובה ומגרגיר אחד ימצא עשרת אלפים גרגרים ומי שעיני שכל לו לא נעלם ממנו דבר זה שאין יכולת בגרגיר לעשות כמו זה אלא בודאי כשגזרת המלך הוא שתצמיח תבואתו כ"כ ימצא כך בגרגרים וכן בכל הדברים שבעולם אינם נגמרים רק על ידי הסבות והם השלוחים של השם יתברך ועיין לקמן בהקדמה החמישית שם יתבאר הצורך אל הסבות ברוב טעם ותבין היטב:

**מבלי סבב אל קיום מצות כו'**רצה לומר בוודאי אם רוצה להקדים דבר לעשותו תיכף ואם יניח לא יעשנה והוא דבר שיסובב על ידו קיום מצוה ועבודת ה' אזי ראוי להקדים ולעשותו תיכף כי בקיום המצות הבחירה ביד האדם ואין גוזרין עליו כמו שיתבאר אבל בשאר דברים מצרכי גופו ומחיתו אין ראוי להקדים ולאחר כו' כמ"ש בפי' חלק ד':

**והקדמה השנית שידע כו'**וכשיתברר זה לבוטח שהש"י יודע האמת אם פיו ולבו שוים בבטחונו איך יטעון ויאמר שהוא בוטח בה' ובאמת כשלבו בל עמו בבטחונו ואז גם ה' מסיר השגחתו ממנו כנ"ל בתחלת השער ואז הוא חילול השם ח"ו וככל החזון הזה ראוי לנו לשום עינינו ולבנו על הדברים שיצאו מפינו בכל יום בתפלתנו שאנחנו טוענין ואומרים כמה פעמים שאנחנו בוטחים בו יתברך ומחכים אליו באמרנו נפשנו חכתה לה' כי בשם קדשו בטחנו יהי חסדך ה' עלינו כאשר יחלנו לך כי בשם קדשך הגדול והנורא בטחנו נגילה כו' ותן שכר טוב לכל הבוטחים בשמך באמת ושים חלקנו כו' כי בך בטחנו. וזולתם עוד הרבה פעמים. וראוי לכל אדם שישים עינו ולבו כל הימים אל דברי השער הזה אז לא נבוש ולא נכלם לא בעוה"ז ולא בעוה"ב:

When a man realizes that G-d knows the truth, whether what comes out of his lips is the same as what is in his heart, how could he then claim and say that he "truly trusts in G-d", when his heart is not with him. And then G-d will also remove His providence from him as mentioned in the beginning of the introduction to this gate ("..whoever trusts in something other than G-d, the Al-mighty will remove His providence from such a person..."), and then it will be a chillul H-ashem. And it is proper for us to put our eyes and hearts on the things which come out of our lips every day in our prayers, that we claim and say many times that we trust in Him and hope to Him, such as in Pesukei D'Zimra: "Nafshenu Chiksa L'H-ashem", "ki bshem kadsho batachnu", "yehi chasdecha..", and in Ahava Raba: "ki bshem kadshecha hagadol vehanora batachnu", and in the Shmonei Esrei "ve ten sachar tov lchol habotchim b'shimcha b'emes, vsim chelkenu imahem", "ki becha batachnu", and many others. It is proper for every man to put his eye and heart all of his days on the words of this gate, then "lo yevosh v'lo yikalem", not in this world and not in the next.

Even though G-d has compassion on all His creations, including the wicked, as he explained earlier, even so, for this, one should not think that G-d will forever tolerate him, and trust that G-d will continue bestowing good to him always despite his wickedness. And even though things are going well now, there is no escape from His judgments, and eventually, when He wishes, He will choose a time and place to collect His debt (of justice). Rather it is proper for a man to endeavor to fulfill all of G-d's commandments.

**ונתברר ממנו**מן הנפש. ועי"ז נתברר מה שהיתה רוצה לבחור הן טוב הן רע אע"פ שלא היתה יכולה לגמרה כי מן השמים עכבוהו מטעם הכמוס אתו ית' כמו שכתוב בטעם השני ג"כ אבל האדם כבר היה מתעסק ורוצה שיוגמר לפי מחשבתו ולכך חייב אחרי זה הגמול והעונש ובזה תוכל לעלות אל המדרגה הרמה הנ"ל כי מלחמה גדולה לפניה בעוה"ז כמ"ש לעיל באורך ע"ש אבל אם היה הכל מוכן ומזומן לפני האדם היה דומה למלאכים ולא היה לו שום בחירה והיה עומד לעולם על מדרגה אחת כמלאכים ולא היה לו שכר ועונש ואין רצונו ית' שיהיו הכל כמלאכים ועיין בפירוש חלק הד' ותבין הדבר היטב:

**עון שקדם לו התחייב להפרע ממנו**בעוה"ז כמ"ש חז"ל בפ"ק דקדושין כל שזכיותיו מרובין מעונותיו מריעין לו פירש רש"י בעולם הזה לנכותו מעונותיו כדי שיטול שכר שלם בעוה"ב ודומה כמו ששרף כל התורה כולה ולא שייר ממנה אות אתת וכל שעונותיו מרובים מזכיותיו מטיבין לו לשלם לו שכר מצותיו בחיים כדי לטרדו כמו שקיים כל התורה כולה ולא חסר אות אחת ממנה עכ"ל. וכתיב רק אתכם ידעתי מכל משפחות האדמה על כן אפקוד עליכם את כל עונותיכם בפרעון אחת לאחת:

**ויש שיהיה ע"ד התמורה בעוה"ב**הן הן יסורים של אהבה שאינן תלויין בעבירה כמ"ש חז"ל בפ"ק דברכות פשפש ולא מצא שום עבירה שיתלה היסורין בה בידוע שהן יסורין של אהבה שנאמר כי את אשר יאהב ה' יוכיח כדי להרבות שכרו בעוה"ב יותר מכדי זכיותיו:

These are "Yisurim shel Ahava" (chastening of love) which are not due to sins, as the talmud says (Berachos 5a): "if he examined his deeds and did not find any sins let him be sure that these are Yisurim shel Ahava, as written (Mishlei 3:12): 'For whom G-d loves He chastens'", i.e. to increase his reward in Olam Haba more than his merits.

**ויש שיהיה להראות סבלו והסברתו הטובה כו'**שהוא מקבל הכל בסבר פנים יפות ואינו מבעט ביסורין כדי שילמדו ב"א ממנו ויראו ויבחנו בו שירצה האדם לעבוד את ה' אף שאין לו כל תאותיו ואף גם אם הוא בעוני ובריש וחלאים רעים כמו שמצינו באיוב ובחכמים הרבה שהיו ביסורין ולא נתבטלו מהתורה והעבודה וכמו שנודע מענין הלל שהיה עני ביותר וזולתם שהיו צריכין לעשות מלאכות לפרנסתם ולמדו התורה: (*אין זה כדי שילמדו בני אדם ממנו כמו ענין הראשון אלא כדי להראות צדקתו לאנשי העולם ולשטן כענין הנסיונות באברהם אבינו שלא יאמרו כמו שבני דורו רשעים כן הוא רשע והנה בזה יבחנהו הנורא ומראה צדקתו ועבודתו שעובד לאלהים מבלעדי אנשי דורו עם שאינם מסכימים למנהגיו ויהיה לו יסורים מהם ע"כ למ"ה):

That he receives everything with a good countenance, and he does not rebel in sufferings so that others will learn from him and see him and notice him and desire to serve G-d even though they don't have all their lusts, and even though they are in poverty, hardship or in painful sicknesses as we find with Iyov (Job) and many other sages, who were in suffering yet did not stop from torah and service, and as is known of Hillel who was extremely poor, and others who needed to labor for their livelihoods and nevertheless studied the torah.

**ויתברר הנבר לאלהים**על ידי זה יתברר מי שהוא נבר טוב לב עם ה' ונאמן בעבודתו אע"פ ששולטין עליו הרשעים ומביישין אותו הוא סובל הכל ויודע ששעתם מצלחת ולא לעולם חוסן וסוף שימצא בעל חוב לגבות חובו ואינו לומד ממעשיהם ויקבל שכר מהבורא יתברך ע"ז אבל אם היו מענישין הרשעים תיכף ולצדיקים לגמול טוב תיכף היה הבחירה ושכר ועונש בטלה והיו כל ב"א רודפים לעשות טוב לקבל שכר מהר ויפחדו מעונש מהר וזהו מחכמת הבורא יתברך הנפלאה וכעין זה מצאתי בס' מנוה"מ בחתימת נר השלישי ע"ש ובמ"ה פי' בענין אחר והבוחר יבחר:

Through this it will be demonstrated who was of good, pure heart to G-d and faithful in His service. And even though the wicked were ruling over him and humiliating him, he bears everything and knows that their success is temporary and eventually G-d will collect His debt. And he doesn't learn from their ways and will receive reward for this. But if G-d were to punish the wicked immediately, and reward the righteous right away, there would be no room for free will (which was the purpose of creation), and everyone would hasten to do good and receive reward quickly and everyone would fear swift punishment.
