**והתהפכות מדות נפשו**שיש בנפש האדם כמה מדות. יש בו מדות וכחות שנכספים בהם שיהיה קיום לגופו ויש בו מדות שנכסף בהם לחכמה ולעוה"ב והן הם היצ"ט והיצה"ר כך כתב בשער ע"ה פ"ב ובשער הפרישות פ"א. וכן יש בנפשו מדות מתחלפים שזכרם בפרק י' משער הג' כמו השמחה והאבל כו' ע"ש:

**זעיר פרא**כעיר הזה שהוא חמור קטן הגדל במדבר שאין בו מסורת הנהגות כן אדם יולד ג"כ בלי חכמה ומוסר וד"א:

**ונאמר הן עד ירח וגו'**עירוב פסוקים יש כאן ולשון הכתוב כך הוא ומה יצדק אנוש עם אל כשיבואו עליו יסורין. ומה יזכה ילוד אשה. הן עד הסיר האור מן ירח ולא יאהיל וכוכבים לא זכו בעיניו. מחמת שלא זכו בעיניו, אף כי אנוש רמה ובן אדם תולעה ומכ"ש אנוש רמה כשיבואו עליו יסורין בודאי מחמת עונותיו ולמה יתרעם:

**היה מחנות הבורא**לשון חן וחנינה ורחמנות שנתן לו יכולת לשוב בתשובה כי השכל היה מחייב שנפש החוטאת היא תמות כמנהג במלכותא דארעא רק הש"י חפץ חסד הוא ולא יחפוץ במות המת הוא הרשע כי אם בשובו וחיה ולא זו בלבד שמקבל אותנו בתשובה העיר ג"כ עליה כמ"ש בפרשת והיה כי יבאו עליך וגו' ושבת עד ה' אלהיך וגו' משמע שישוב מעצמו ואח"כ נתן דבר התשובה וזירז אותנו שלא נתיישן בחטא והרחיב אמתלאותינו ע"י נביאים הרבה והראה לנו כמה טענות ואמתלאות שנוכל לטעון על עונותינו כדי שנשוב בתשובה ושלא נתייאש מרחמי האל כמ"ש הושע בסוף שובה ישראל עד ה' אלהיך כי כשלת בעונך קחו עמכם דברים ושובו אל ה' אמרו אליו וגו' כל הענין וכן נאמר (ביחזקאל ל״ג:י״ב) ואתה בן אדם אמור אל בית ישראל חי אני נאם ה' אלהים אם אחפוץ במות הרשע כי אם בשוב רשע מדרכו וחיה שובו שובו מדרכיכם הרעים ולמה תמותו בית ישראל וגו'. וזולתם כמה פסוקים כאלה שקראו הנביאים לתשובה:

**it was out of Divine grace to man** -- this means grace, favor, and mercy - that the Creator granted man the ability to repent, because according to reason, "the soul which sins shall die" (Yechezkel 18:20) as is the custom for [human] kings of the land (who execute those who rebel). Only that G-d desires in kindness... "for I do not desire the death of the wicked, says the L-rd G-d, but that he repents and lives"... and (Yechezkel 33:11) "Say to them: As I live, says the L-rd G-d, I do not wish for the death of the wicked, but for the wicked to repent of his way so that he may live. Repent, repent of your evil ways, for why should you die?"

**ואם ארך המרותנו את דברו**אע"פ שהארכנו להמרותו כמה זמנים ולבסוף עשה משפט וצדקה ושב מעונותיו חיה יחיה:

**ולפי שהיו הצדיקים שני מינים כו'**יבא לתרץ למה שאמר דהע"ה ב' פעמים אשרי כנגד שני מיני צדיקים כנגד צדיק מעיקרו שלא טעם טעם חטא וכנגד הבעל תשובה והתחיל מבע"ת תחלה ואמר אשרי נשוי פשע כסוי חטאה ואחר כך אמר אשרי אדם לא יחשב ה' לו עון ואין ברוחו רמיה שהוא צדיק מעיקרו:

**ואם היא קודמת כמעלה**אע"פ שצדיק מעיקרו הוא קודם במעלה מפני שכל שב בוודאי לא נולד עם החטא וא"כ כבר היה לו תחלה מעלת הצדיק ואין הצדיק צריך למעלת השב וא"כ ראוי הוא שיהיה חשוב יותר במעלתו מן השב וראוי שיזכר בראשונה רק מפני מיעוט מציאות צדיק מעיקרו עד סופו שלא יחטא לעולם לכך זכרם באחרונה. ואע"פ שאחז"ל במקום שבעלי תשובה עומדים כו' מדרגות מדרגות יש כמו שביאר המחבר בפרק ח' ע"ש:

**ואמר כי אין אדם אשר לא יחטא**בתפלת שלמה המלך ע"ה כתיב במ"א ח':
