**אמר המחבר כו' התחייבנו לזכור אח"כ מה שהאדם חייב לנהוג בו כשיתברר אצלו**רצה לומר אחר שיתברר לאדם כל זה שיש אלהים בשמים ובארץ והוא לבדו ברא הכל ויתברר אצלו כמה טובה כפולה למקום יתברך עלינו כמו שכתבנו בשני. השערים העוברים יהיה התולדה מזה שמחוייב האדם לקבל עליו עול עבודת הבורא יתברך בעבור טובותיו:

i.e. once all this has become clear to a person, namely, that there is a G-d above and below and He alone created everything, and it has also become clear how much abounding beneficence He has bestowed on us, as written in the previous two gates - the consequence of this is that a human being is under duty to assume on himself the yoke of the service of G-d.

**ונאמר כי מן הידוע כו'**שהכל הולך אחר הכוונה אם הוא מטיב בלי שום פניה ואף שלפעמים יקצר וימנע מלהיטיב מחמת שקרה לו מקרה ואונס שאינו יכול להיטיב על כל זה:

[According to reason] everything goes after the intent. If he benefits him without outside interest, even though sometimes he falls short and is prevented from this due to some incident or mischance, nevertheless - we are under duty to thank him for his good intention and faithful heart.

**ואם האב מוכרח בזה כו'**ר"ל ואע"פ שהאב מוכרח לעשות זה בדרך הטבע ועוד שהטובה היא מאתו ית' והאב הוא רק שליח להיטיב בטובת האל לבניו ועם כל זה חייב הבן בכבוד האבות כנ"ל:

**אבל טובת האדון כו' לתקן ממונו בממונו**שאין יכול לעשות מלאכתו בעצמו לכן קונה עבד בממון ועושה עמו טובה כדי שיתקן עבדו את שאר ממונו.

**אבל טובת העשיר וכו' הוא כסוחר**ר"ל אף אם כוונתו לשכר עוה"ב הוא כסוחר שקונה עתה סחורה בדמים מועטים וכוונתו שישתכר אחר כך בסחורה זו מעות הרבה כן הדבר בנותן צדקה לקבל שכרו בעולם הבא במתנה המעוטה שנותן לעני רוצה לקנות הנאה גדולה קיימת דהיינו העולם הבא:

**for the sake of a heavenly reward** -- i.e. even if his intent is for heavenly reward [which is the highest of the ulterior motives], nevertheless, he is like a merchant who purchases merchandise with little money with intent that he will profit afterwards with this merchandise a lot of money. So too, for one who gives charity to receive heavenly reward. With the small donation he gives to the poor person, he intends to acquire a great and enduring pleasure, namely, the afterlife.

**בטובה שהפקידה האלהים בידו כו'**שבודאי הטובות היתרות שיש בידי אדם יותר מצרכם הוא רק כפקדון אצלו והוא כגזבר וגבאי עליו לתת אותם למי שיהיה ראוי לתת לו כמ"ש הר"מ אלשיך על פסוק וחי אחיך עמך רצה לומר חי של אחיך רצה לומר פרנסתו וחיותו הוא עמך ואצלך כי השם יתברך רוצה לזכות לעשיר במצות צדקה ויחלץ העני בעניו:

**ומה שנראה עליו מחוץ ממה שהוא קרוב מהם**רצה לומר דומה להלכלוכים והטינופים שבתוך האדם אם אינו רוחץ זמן רב מהצרעת והכנים והדומה משא"כ בבעלי חיים אף על פי שאינם רוחצים:

**and the similar appearances on the skin** -- i.e. it is similar to the filth and foulness inside the body if he does not wash himself for a long time, such as skin diseases, or the like, unlike the animals even if they don't bathe.

**למאורע שאירע במוחו**לפגע שקרה לו במוחו ולכן הוא חסר דעה ואז הוא נעוה ונתעה כדרך המשוגעים ואז הוא גרוע מהבהמה כי הבהמה אף שאין בה שכל אינה עושה מעשה משוגע שלפעמים הוא משחית את עצמו וממית את עצמו משא"כ בע"ח שמכירין טובתם ויכולין לעשות תחבולות להשיג מזונותם כמו שנראה בקורי עכביש או דבש דבורים וכיוצא מה שהרבה משכילים מב"א לא יוכלו לעשות כמותם כיוצא בהן:

**due to a brain injury** -- hence, he lost his ability to reason, then he is "stupider and more senseless", like the way of the crazy people. For then he is worse than an animal, because despite that an animal does not have an intellect, nevertheless, it does not act crazily. Sometimes he inflicts on himself serious injury or even kills himself, unlike the animals who recognize what will be to their advantage and show ingenuity in obtaining their food such as the spider's web or the honeycomb of the bee, or the like, something which many wise men cannot do like them.

**ויבחין כל עניניו**בכל מה שעושה הש"י עמו מקטן ועד גדול יוכל לבחון בו חסד האל ית' וידבק בעבודת האל על כל פנים מאחר שיודע ויתברר אצלו שהכל כאשר לכל מאת השם יתברך ואין לאדם שום תחבולה לגמור שום דבר בלי רצון הש"י אם כן יהיה בטחונו חזק בה' יתברך בין שהטיב עמו או שהרע עמו כמ"ש כל ארחות ה' חסד ואמת כמו שיתבאר לקמן בשער הבטחון בהקדמה החמישית ע"ש:

**וכמ"ש הנביא כו' הלה' תגמלו זאת**וכי כך תגמלו לה' בעד כל טובותיו שהטיב עמכם וסיפא דקרא הלא הוא אביך קנך הוא עשך ויכוננך והם הטובות הכוללות על בני אדם שבראם מאין ליש ועיין לעיל בהקדמה שם פירשתי פסוק זה ואחר כך זכר הטובות המיוחדות לנו והראיות הברורות והגלויות אמר זכור ימות עולם וגו' כי חלק ה' עמו וגו' ימצאהו בארץ מדבר וגו' וכל הענין מדבר בקבלת התורה ובטובות הש"י עמנו בפרט כמו שפירש רש"י שם ע"ש:
