**ערוב** היא המכה רביעית. **אפו** הדובי' והאריות היו משחיתי' והורגים מהם.

**עָרוֹב** ***Arov*****, A mixture of wild animals**, is the fourth plague. 
1. **אַפּ֗וֹ** “His anger” - Bears and lion would maim and kill them.

**עברה** אמר ר' יאשיה למה נקרא שמו ערוב שהעריב עליהם את המאורות ולא היה חשך כמו מכת החשך אלא רבוי העופות החשיך האויר מעין מה שעשה הארבה. אי נמי כל כך היו מבוהלי' במרוצתם לנוס מפני פחד החיות. שהיו נופלים כמי שהולך ודרכו חשך וחלקלקות.

2. **עֶבְרָ֣ה** “ Wrath” - Rabbi Yeshaia said: Why is this plague called *Arov*? Because it darkened the planetary lights. This darkness was not like the plague of darkness . Rather, there were birds that darkened the sky much as the locust darkened the sky. Or else,the people were so agitated that they ran in fear of the wild animals. They were like someone who was walking in a dark and slippery area.

**זעם** שנסגרו בבתיהם מפני פחד החיות רעות לא הועיל להם כי הקב"ה הביא עליהם נשרי' ועורבים ומיני עופות רבים ונכנסים דרך החלונות והאכסדראות והורגים בהם.

3. **וָזַ֣עַם** “Indignation.” When they¹⁵⁴ closed themselves in their homes because of the fear of the wild animals, it didn’t help them because God brought eagles and ravens and many types of birds that entered through the windows and the porches so that they could kill the Egyptians.

¹⁵⁴ There is no mention of צָרָ֑ה indignation for this plague. However, this would appear to be a separate step - and it should appear here.

**וצרה** כשנסתלק הערוב ולא נשאר מהם עד אחד. אפי' אותן שהרגו ועבדו עורותיהן חיו והלכו להם כדי שלא יהנו מהמכות.

4. **צָרָ֑ה** “Trouble” - When the wild animals left, not one of them remained behind, even those that they had killed and whose skins they had flayed were missing so that they would not benefit from the plague.

**משלחת מ"ר** החיות כשהלכו להם השחיתו הארץ ברגליהן ועשו בה חריצין ונעיצים וחפירות בדרכים ובבתים עד שהיו טורחים להלוך. ובשדות קלקלו הנירי' ומחרישות. שנא' תשחת הארץ מפני הערוב:

5. **מִ֝שְׁלַ֗חַת מַלְאֲכֵ֥י רָעִֽים** “A band of deadly messengers” When the animals left they destroyed the earth with their footprints, making furrows, ditches, and pits on the roads and in the houses so that it was difficult to walk. In the fields they destroyed plowed areas, as Scripture states, “the land was ruined because of the animals.” (Ex. 8:20)
