[תמן תנינן אבא שאול אומר כבש פרה כהנים גדולים עושין אותה משל עצמן, ולא היה אחד מהן מוציא פרתו בכבש של חבירו, אלא סותרו וחוזר ובונה אותו משלו, אמר ר' אחא בשם ר' חנינא יותר מששים ככרי זהב היה מוצא עליו, וכלם שחצים היו, והתנן שמעון הצדיק עשה שתי פרות, ולא בכבש שהוציא את הראשונה הוציא את השני, אית לך למימר על אותו צדיק שהיה שחץ, ר' אבין בשם ר' אלעזר אמר משום סלסול פרה].

[We are taught there (in *Sheq.* 4:2): ABBA SAUL SAID: THE HIGH PRIESTS BUILT A CAUSEWAY¹²⁵ 3:6. FOR THE RED HEIFER AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE, and not one of them brought his heifer on the causeway of his colleague.¹²⁶ 4:7; *PR* 14:14. Instead he would disassemble it and build it again at his own expense.¹²⁷ 7:1 for a similar tradition about the altar ramp. R. Aha said in the name of R. Hanina: More than sixty talents of gold were spent on it, for they all were arrogant. We have been taught (in a baraita): Simeon the Just prepared two heifers (during his term of office), but he did not bring out the second on the same causeway where he had brought out the first.¹²⁸ 4:3 or 2 (48a). Is it for you to say of this just person that he was arrogant? R. Abbin said in the name of R. Eleazar: He did so, because of the dignity of the heifer.
