"A sweet year" - because of this, there are those who refrain on Rosh Hashanah from cooking sour foods, such as Borscht. Therefore, those who eat fish as a sign of fertility should not cook them in vinegar. All these symbols are done as a sign of the good which is to come, so obviously one should be very careful not to be angry on this day (apart from it never being permitted!) so that the day is full of goodness. Just fill the heart with happiness, and trusting God, and repentance, and good deeds.

(8) The river, etc. — and to say, "You will take us back in mercy, etc." Because it is found in the Midrash that our father Abraham crossed [a river] until the water reached his neck when he went to sacrifice [Isaac] over the altar. Then he said, "Save [Us]," since the water threatened his life. And we do this to commemorate the binding [of Isaac]. It is good to go to a place where there are living fish as a sign that the evil eye will not overpower us, and that we should be fruitful and multiply like fish. And it is written in some writings: It should be a river or a spring, and it is better if it is outside of the city. One should go on the first day [of Rosh Hashanah] after the afternoon prayers before the sunset, and say: *Who is a God like You, etc.* (Micah 7:18-20). To here are its [words]. And I have seen in a few places, that when the first day falls out on Shabbat, they go to the river on the second day. And it is possible that it is because of [the prohibition of] transporting out, since we carry books and the like. Hence we go on the second day (Pri Megadim).
