**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
So based on this will be reconciled the matter of the different opinions of the early great ones²¹² (OBM), whether the man from Israel is greater than an angel, or angel greater than him. The holders of the two opinions each bring explanatory proofs from proof texts, and based on our previous discussion it will be explained that both are the words of the living God, only from different perspectives.

[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 10:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20I/r/10:2)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
For an angel is certainly greater than man, whether considered from the essence of his nature, whether considered from the greatness of his holiness and wondrous abilities, there’s no comparison or resemblance between them at all.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And as is written in the *Zohar Chaddash*, *Bereshit*, in the *Midrash Ha-neh-eh-lahm*, in the section dealing with “And God-*Elohi”m* called the light ‘day’”: “The angels’ accomplishment is a great accomplishment, which is not the case below them, a secondary level of accomplishment..., and the tertiary level of ability is the achievement at the lower level that has Dust²¹³ as its elemental, and that is Man’s level of accomplishment.” And there (16b): “The angels nearby receive the abundance of the heavenly lens’²¹⁴ power first, and from them it descends to the heavens and all of its hosts, and from them to man”—refer there [for more details]. And in *Zohar T’rooma* (129b): “High angels, they are much holier than we”.

footnotes:
²¹³ Dust (or Earth) is one of the four elementals of creation, the others being Fire, Water, Air
²¹⁴ The flow of heavenly influence from its Source to this lowest of worlds is often described as being similar to light that passes through a sequence of lenses of various qualities of clarity, some more clear and some less.

###### Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 10:4
[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 10:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20I/r/10:4)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
However, in one situation man has a great advantage over the angels, and that is in elevating and connecting the worlds and the powers and lights one to another, that is completely beyond the power of any angel. This is because of the reason we discussed above, that the angel is, in essence, only one specific power that does not have within it the integration of all the worlds together. (And so it is written in the *Etz Chayyim*, *Sha-ar P’nimiyut V’khi-tzoniyut*, at the beginning of the tenth *droosh*, that the angel is a specific aspect of the world in which it exists, while man’s soul-*Neshama*, in all three of its parts (*Neffesh*, *Ruakh* and *Neshama*), is comprised of all the worlds—refer there [for more details]. Therefore it’s not within the ability of the angel in any way to elevate, connect or to unify a world with the world that is outstretched above their heads, because it is not integrated within them nor partnered with them.

###### Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 10:5
[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 10:5](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20I/r/10:5)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
Also, the ascent of the angel’s essence to its level, so as to connect to the world above him, does not depend on him by himself. For that reason the angels are referred to as “standing”, as is written (Yeshayahu 6:2): “*seraphim* standing” and (*Z’khar-ya* 3:7): “I will give you free access among these who stand”.

###### Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 10:6
[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 10:6](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20I/r/10:6)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
Only man alone, he is the one who elevates and connects and unifies the worlds and the lights via the power of his actions, because he integrates them all, and then the angel too achieves an ascent and an increase in holiness over his holiness. That happens as a result of man’s actions, because he [the angel] too is included in man. (Refer to something similar to this in the *Etz Chayyim*, *Sha-ar Ha-iburim*, at the beginning of chapter 4²¹⁵ discusses how when a sage passes on to the next world, angels often accompany the soul, appearing as if they are transporting the soul, while in fact it is the other way around, that the soul transports the angels upward.).)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
Also, the three components (*Neffesh*, *Ruakh* and *Neshama*) of man himself are not given the power of elevation and connection of all the worlds and among themselves, until they descend into this world of action in the body of man, as is written (Bereshit 2:7): “… and He breathed into his nostrils a soul-*Nishmaht* of life… ” into the body of man, then “and the man became a living soul-*Neffesh*” of all the worlds, as mentioned above in chapter 4.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And this is also the matter of our father Yaakov’s (peace be upon him) vision of the ladder. Refer to the Raa-ya M’hemna Na-so 123: “… and He breathed into his nostrils a soul-*Nishmaht* of life…”, about which is said (Bereshit 28:12): “and he dreamed and lo, there was a ladder...”. The ladder is definitely the living soul-*Neshama*... ,” refer there, and as will be explained (with God’s help) further on in Chapter 19. And via this “and lo, angels of God-*Elohi”m* ascended and descended upon it”, as if to say via the living soul-*Neshama* that is positioned on the earth, its lowest edge clothing itself in man’s body.
