**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And this is what they (OBM) stated (*Bava Kamma* 50a): “All who say that the Holy One (blessed be He) makes concessions⁶¹³, his life will be conceded⁶¹⁴”, which on the face of it is amazing, and we already explained a little above in Gate 1, Chapter 12.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And in our current context, the matter is clarified further with a pleasing rationale, that it’s not by way of revenge (heaven forefend), but rather just as it’s in a person’s nature that if he would eat a food that in its nature would damage and injure his body, that food would injure him or he might also sicken from it. And if it was a fatal poison, he would die from it, and he himself would be responsible for his death. It’s the same regarding the sins of the soul-*Neffesh* that sins (heaven forefend), for this is what He (blessed be He) fixed with His will, the nature of how the worlds are organized and how they are, that man’s good or bad deeds (heaven forefend) are like the matter of nourishment and food for them. Concessions are irrelevant to this, and he is required to dispose of⁶¹⁵ the filth of the impurity that was strengthened in the world as a result of his sins, via either one of the two [methods of] rectifications mentioned above⁶¹⁶.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And now you can envision and understand [emphatically] the matter of the increase and expansion of blessing, and how great the awesome need for our holy service, in totality, towards the very essence of maintaining the continued existence of the worlds, and to draw forth and distribute within them many blessings and an increase in holiness, from the perspective of His Essence’s (blessed be He) link to them per His supernal will (blessed be He), as in the matter of eating and nourishment as mentioned above. And this is His will and His glory (blessed be He) for a reason that is hidden with Him (blessed be His name), that is beyond our ability to grasp.

[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate II 8:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20II/r/8:4)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And it’s worthwhile for each person of the holy nation, whose heart/mind is anxious that his actions be acceptable before Him (blessed be He), to combine this thought and the purity of the desired intention in the involvement with Torah⁶¹⁷—See the footnote at the beginning of Gate 4 for a discussion of what “involvement with Torah” means to Rav Chayyim. and the performance of all the commandments, to draw forth and to increase, by way of that nourishment, a holiness and new light in the worlds.
