**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And what is written here: *la Ma-kome*⁷⁴⁵*,* and also too in Avot where they stated: “and when you pray, don’t make your prayer static⁷⁴⁶; rather make it [an expression of] compassion and grace before the *Ma-kome* (blessed be He)”, with the word *Ma-kome* they (OBM) hinted at a great matter. And the matter requires explication to understand the depths of their (OBM) intention by this, and to understand the verses that hint about this.

footnotes:
⁷⁴⁵ Lit.: “to the place”
⁷⁴⁶ Heb.: keh-va

[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 1:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20III/r/1:2)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
Previously they (OBM) stated in Avot (2:15): “that all of their words are like smoldering embers”, that even though there is only the glimmer of flame, if you make an effort to turn it over and aerate it⁷⁴⁷, as you aerate it more, the ember will flare and the glimmer will spread within it, until it’s all ablaze and you can benefit from it to use its light and to warm oneself next to it. But only by being next to it, not to directly grasp it, for once it’s ablaze one must be mindful not to be burned by it.

footnotes:
⁷⁴⁷ Aerate, as with a blacksmith’s bellows

[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 1:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20III/r/1:3)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
This same metaphor was applied to all of the sages’ words. For even when their statements seem to be concise and have plain meanings, even so, they are like a shattering hammer blow, for the more a person turns them [male/plural] inside-out, and elaborates upon them and examines them meticulously, his eyes will be enlightened from the flame of their great light, for he will find within them deep matters, as they (OBM) stated (Avot 5:26): “Turn it [singular/fem.] inside-out and turn it [singular/fem.] inside-out again, for everything is within it [singular/fem.]”.

###### Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 1:4
[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 1:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20III/r/1:4)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
But one must be exceedingly mindful about their smoldering embers, not to introduce, contemplate and delve into texts for which one lacks permission to excessively contemplate their inner meanings, as they stated there: “and be warmed as-if next to the light of the sages”, as-if to say “Do not distance yourself from ever contemplating them, for you’ll not benefit from their light at all; but also do not approach them too closely, so that you won’t get burned”, as we stated above and as they concluded, following that with “and be mindful of their smoldering embers…”.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And so too is it here, with the word *Ma-kome*, that even though its plain meaning is clear, when we examine it meticulously we’ll find that another great matter is contained and hinted at within it.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
For regarding the matter why He (blessed be He) is called *Ma-kome*, the sages (OBM) explained in *Bereshit Rabba* (*parsha* 68) on the verse “and he encountered the place-*Ma-kome*” (Bereshit 28:11): “Rav Hoona, in the name of Rav Ahmee, stated: ‘For what reason do we assign a name to the Holy One (blessed be He) and call him *Ma-kome*? Because He is the universe’s space, and the universe is not His space⁷⁴⁸’.” And in *Sh’mote Rabba* (end of *parsha* 45), and in *Tahn-khooma* (*parsha Tee-sa*): “And God-*YHV”H* stated: ‘Behold a place with me’ (Shemot 33:21): Rav Yo-see bar Cha-lafta stated… : ‘My space is subordinate to me; I am not subordinate to my space’”, and so it states in *Sho-kheir Tove*, *T’hillim*, *mizmor* 90.

footnotes:
⁷⁴⁸ Meaning that He is the “space” (so to speak) within which the universe exists, rather than the other way around.

[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 1:7](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20III/r/1:7)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And according to its plain meaning it desired to express that just as a physical place tolerates and supports any thing or object that is rested upon it, so too, according to this metaphor, the Creator, Master of All (blessed be His name), He is the true space that tolerates and preserves the existence of all the worlds and creations. For if (heaven forefend) His energy would depart from them for even one moment, the space where all the worlds persist and exist would be nullified, and as is stated (Nechemyah 9:6): “and You enliven them all”.

###### Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 1:8
[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 1:8](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20III/r/1:8)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And this is a cornerstone of the Jewish faith, as the RaMBa”M (OBM) wrote in the beginning of his book. For that reason, the *Zohar* calls the Master of All (blessed be His name) the “Soul-*Neshama* of All Souls-*Neshama*”.

###### Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 1:9
[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 1:9](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20III/r/1:9)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
For just as the soul-*Neshama* enlivens and preserves the existence of the body—and as is written (Sanhedrin 91b): “Is it possible for a piece of flesh three days…”—so too is He (blessed be His name) alone the life force of all the worlds, and as is [also] known from many citations in the *Tikkoonim* and the *Raa-ya M’hemna*. And refer to the beginning of the *Tikkoonim*’s second introduction, in the essay starting with “Eliyahu began…”. And so too our sages (OBM) compared the preservation of the existence of the worlds via His (may He be blessed) energy, to the preservation of the existence of the body via the powers of the soul-*Neshama*. They stated (Berakhot 10a): “Just as the soul-*Neshama* permeates and nourishes the entire body, so too the Holy One (blessed be He) permeates and nourishes…”. This is the plain meaning of the matter of He (blessed be He) being called the universe’s *Ma-kome*.
