**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
However, the inner meaning of the matter of “the universe’s *Ma-kome*” is a great matter indeed. For the reason why He (blessed be His name) is called “the universe’s *Ma-kome*” is not comparable at all to the matter of a physical place that supports an object placed upon it, for the essence of a physical object’s existence in this moment⁷⁴⁹ and its persistence over time⁷⁵⁰ is that it has an independent existence⁷⁵¹, and the physical place simply prevents it from falling and breaking. And similar to this is the matter of the body in relation to the soul-*Neshama,* regarding the body’s current vitality⁷⁵² and persistence over time: the body has an independent existence and its existence doesn’t disappear, even when the soul-*Neshama* leaves it.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
But all of the worlds, the primary cause of their continued existence in each instant proceeds exclusively from Him (blessed be His name), and if He would remove His (blessed be He) Will from bringing them into existence anew in each instant, they would actually be a nil and nothingness⁷⁵³, in this very instant, and if He would remove the will for it to continue to exist, it would be a nil and nothingness..

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And only because no created being, not even the highest of the high, has the power to grasp the true nature of the matter—how all the worlds and their legions are [emphatically] in actuality nothingness, and only that in each instant they are [emphatically] being brought into existence by Him (blessed be He)—for that reason they chose to use a metaphor to describe Him (blessed be He) and to explain to the “ear-that’s able-to-listen-in-the-company-of-wise-sages” using the word *Ma-kome*.[*A]

**Annotation A:***Using the method of homiletic interpretation*⁷⁵⁴*, we can derive from the series of verses starting with “And wisdom*⁷⁵⁵*, where can it be found” (*Ee-yove *28:12), that the greatest of all wisdoms that can be grasped from Him (blessed be He) is the marvelous wisdom that it’s from nothingness that the existence of each instant originates. “And which is the place-*Ma-kome *of understanding*⁷⁵⁶*”, implies that nowhere in existence is there a faculty of rational mind*⁷⁵⁷) with rational mind. *Chokh-ma* and *Bee-na* are two of the three s’feerote in the “head”. *Bee-na* is incapable of grasping the marvelous wisdom of whence existence originates. *Sei-khel* is the Hebrew word that we translate as “rational mind”. *to which we could point, where that is the place-*ma-kome *that has the capacity to accept upon it the quality of rational understanding to understand this marvelous power.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
For despite that:
1. His wisdom (blessed be He) decreed that this be so, to supply a being-ness to His universe in a manner that it is beyond all minds to grasp how the continuous bringing-into-existence proceeds from Him (blessed be He) each instant, and
2. they are able to imagine, using their physical eyes, that the universe has an independent existence (heaven forefend),
our sages (OBM) were able to enlighten the rational intellect when they used the metaphor of place-*Ma-kome*. For just as an object exists in space and at the same time the object apparently has an independent existence, even so, if the object didn’t have a space in which to exist, it would be as if it didn’t exist.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
**Annotation B:***Another reason they described Him (blessed be He) using the term place-*Ma-kome*, is because space enables an object to exist, even if it*⁷⁵⁸ *is not equal in value to the object. And also, space allows for many different objects to exist—by existing they don’t cause any change in the space, and the space enables their existence and tolerates all of them equally. So too does He (blessed be He) enable the existence of all the worlds, even if there is no equivalence in value between Him (blessed be He) and them, for even the supernal crown*⁷⁵⁹, referring to the highest world *is like darkness in comparison to the* Ein Sofe*. Also, even though it appears to us that within creation there are tremendous variations, levels that differ one from another, and even if there are also powers of impurity and the “other side*⁷⁶⁰*” in all of their levels, and their continued existence proceeds only from Him (blessed be He), even so it does not change Him (blessed be His name), for He does not change. From His perspective He enables their existence in a manner similar to the metaphor of space.*
*And being that it is impossible for any rational mind to grasp how and what, and it being so incredible, for this reason the sages (OBM) intervened regarding “behold a place-*Ma-kome *with me*⁷⁶¹*” (*Sh’mote *33:21): “My place is an incidental attribute to Me”, meaning that no thought can capture how He exhibits the quality of immutable space. Only He alone can grasp His essential nature, grasp how He is the immutable space in which all the worlds exist, as in the context of “and He knows its [fem.] place” (*Ee-yove *28:23). And this is specifically what “with Me” means, as in the matter when the heart/mind does not reveal to the mouth*⁷⁶²—when a matter experienced by the heart/mind is beyond rational verbal description.*.*

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
So too, even though the entire universe is normally perceived and described as having an independent existence, He (blessed be His name) is its space. But for the space in His Will to continuously bring the worlds into existence, how much more so would it be as if they never existed.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And what is stated in *Seifer Y’tzeera* (chapter 1, *mishna* 8): “‘Ten *s’feerote* of non-existence’—Block your mouth from discussing it and your heart/mind from reflecting on it. And if your heart/mind runs off, return it to the place-*Ma-kome*, for it is stated for that reason: ‘run off and return’⁷⁶³ (Yechezkel 1:14).” It uses the term “*la Ma-kome*” specifically, to point out that if the thoughts of a person’s heart/mind should “run off” to attempt to grasp a rational explanation of how their continued existence proceeds from Him (blessed be His name) in each instant, “return to the place-*Ma-kome*” to grasp the value of the rational explanation from the similarity to what we normally perceive regarding space, as we discussed previously. And refer to the RaMBa”N’s (OBM) explanation of this *mishna*.

[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 2:9](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20III/r/2:9)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And regarding this particular meaning did our holy sages (OBM) clear a trail, offering metaphors regarding His (blessed be He) relationship to the worlds, even though there is no comparison or resemblance between the metaphor and the reality, except to a very specific feature, and even this has only a very slight resemblance.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And as is written in the *Raa-ya M’hemna* (*parshaht Pinkhas,* 257b and 258a): “And one should know…, in this manner He created the soul-*Neshama*…, and just as the Master of the Worlds does not have a name that is known or a place that is known, rather His sovereignty is all-pervasive, so too the soul-*Neshama* does not have… rather her sovereignty is all-pervasive and there isn’t a limb/organ vacant of it…, and in all these names and appellations referring to all the worlds…, to demonstrate that His sovereignty rules them, so too the soul-*Neshama*, she was likened to Him because of her sovereignty over all of the body’s limbs/organs. It’s not that the soul-*Neshama* resembles Him in an essential way, for He created her…, and moreover…, and for the reason that the soul-*Neshama* resembles Him in her sovereignty over all the body’s limbs/organs, and not for any other reason.” Refer there at length [for more detail].

[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 2:11](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20III/r/2:11)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And also like that are all the cases that the sages (OBM) listed there in the context of comparing Him (blessed be He) to the soul-*Neshama* in the body. All of them are only about the matter of His (blessed be His name) permeating the worlds, filling them, and His rule over them, as mentioned above, for only in that matter do they metaphorize Him in their expositions.

###### Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 2:12
[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 2:12](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20III/r/2:12)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And they hinted at this in the *Tikkoonim* (end of *Tikkoon* 38), saying: “that His voice and speech will be heard from the throne, and angels, heaven and earth, that it should be made known to them completely, above and below, as a soul-*Neshama* that rules over the entire body, even in the smallest limb/organ, and no limb/organ is vacant of it [fem.].”

###### Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 2:13
[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 2:13](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20III/r/2:13)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
He precisely used the phrase “like a soul-*Neshama* that rules…”. And in any case, it seems that in this case too where they (OBM) compared to Him, they didn’t equate Him to her⁷⁶⁴ in toto, for they said that just as the soul-*Neshama* permeates the body, so too the Holy One (blessed be He) permeates the entire universe. And so too what they stated in the section of the *Tikkoonim* we mentioned above “like the soul-*Neshama*… and none of its limbs/organs”, and also there in *Tikkoon* 70: “In each limb/organ there is a *YHV”H*…, there is no place vacant of Him, like a soul-*Neshama* that is present in each and every limb/organ of the body.” The matter of the Holy One (blessed be He) filling the universe is not like the matter of the soul-*Neshama* filling the body, for after all, the body itself acts as a barrier between them, only that it permeates the interior of all the pieces of its components and sustains it⁷⁶⁵, for when the soul-*Neshama* leaves the body, the body does not disappear as a result, but the Master of All (blessed be His name) fills all of the worlds and the creations, and they don’t offer any barrier to Him (heaven forefend) in any way. And there is truly nothing other than He (blessed be He) at all in all the worlds, from the highest of the high to the depths of the deepest abyss in the earth, to the extent that you could say that there is nothing created here nor a universe at all, only that everything is full of the simple essence of His (blessed be He) unity.

The singular of this word (*ha-ko-ra*) is used in 2 *M’lakhim Bet* 6:5, in the context of the prophet Elisha enabling the retrieval of a borrowed metal tool that was lost under water. The tool was being used to fell a tree trunk (*ha-ko-ra*). In the current text the word is used in an architectural context, hence I translate the word as “columns”. separate Him, for he would not create anything that would limit Him.”
