**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And furthermore, the holy Torah has an advantage of greater amount of light and additional holiness over all of the *mitzvote* taken together. For even if a person accomplished all of the six-hundred-and-thirteen *mitzvote* in toto, with true perfection (as appropriate), in all of their details and precision and with pure and holy intention, so that the person then becomes a complete Vehicle in all his limbs/organs, parts, and all of his powers, so that the supernal holiness of all the *mitzvote* should settle upon them, even so there’s no comparison nor likening in any way of the holiness and light of the *mitzvote* to the huge awesomeness of the holiness and light of the holy Torah, whose light manifests over the person who is involved with it and contemplates it appropriately.

[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 30:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20IV/r/30:2)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
For the origin of its holy path, is far, far above the root of the holiness and the supernal lights of all the *mitzvote* taken together, as mentioned previously. And this is what they stated in *parshat ha-Torah* (Avot 6:1): “…and makes him great and ascendant over all activities”, this being the activities of all the *mitzvote*. And they also stated this in the *Yerushalmi* (chapter 1 of *Pei-ah*), that all of the *mitzvote* taken together aren’t equivalent to one word from the Torah.

###### Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 30:3
[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 30:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20IV/r/30:3)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And it’s also that the holiness and light of the *mitzva* whose light will dwell on that thing or object with which or by which the *mitzva* will be performed, settles upon them only temporarily, at the moment that they are used to perform the *mitzva*. But after the *mitzva* is performed with it, the holiness and the light ascends and departs from them immediately, and it is left as it was beforehand.

###### Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 30:4
[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 30:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20IV/r/30:4)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
In contrast, the holy Torah, any place that its light and holiness shines or appears once, it has eternal holiness and remains continuously in its state of holiness, as we learned in the *B’raita* (Megilah 26b) that the objects used for performing a *mitzva* may be discarded after their *mitzva* is performed, while objects of holiness must be stored away. And for that reason they included the objects of *t’fillin* and *m’zooza* in the class of holy objects, by virtue of the paragraphs of Torah that were once placed within them.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And you will never find anything among their (OBM) words that is not hinted at in scripture. And we can apply the verse (Mishlei 6:23): “for a *mitzva* is a lamp and Torah is light” also upon this matter that we mentioned, according to their (OBM) explanation mentioned above in *Sota*: that a lamp illuminates only temporarily, while light illuminates forever. And they (OBM) made a distinction between them with regards to being a shield and protection for a person. And it’s possible to also explain it in this way too, that the text also hints to the difference and distinction between the holy Torah and the *mitzvote* that is explained in the *B’raita* in *M’geela* mentioned above.

###### Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 30:6
[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 30:6](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20IV/r/30:6)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And not only that, but even that holiness and the enlivening forces and lights of the *mitzvote* that make a person holy and enliven the person who performs them, is taken from and has influence based only on the holiness and light of the holy Torah, for a *mitzva* has no inherent life force or holiness or light of its own at all. It’s only from the perspective of the holiness of the letters of the Torah that are written in relation to the context of that *mitzva*. And we can also apply the matter in the verse: “for a *mitzva* is a lamp and Torah is light”, to the context of the lamp that has no light of its own—it only has the light that illuminates within it.

[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 30:7](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20IV/r/30:7)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
It’s also certain that one who is involved with Torah alone, without performing any *mitzvote* at all (heaven forefend), also has nothing, as our rabbis (OBM) stated (Yevamot 109b): “Anyone who asserts that he has nothing but Torah¹²⁰⁹, he does not even have Torah¹²¹⁰ have the word *ah-feeloo* rather than *ahf*.”. And in chapter 2 of Berakhot (17a): “Rava often repeated: ‘The purpose of wisdom is repentance and good deeds, so that a person does not read¹²¹¹ and learn¹²¹² and [then] kick his father and teacher …¹²¹³, …it doesn’t state ‘to those who learn it’ but rather ‘to their practitioners’.”¹²¹⁴

¹²⁰⁹ There should be an ellipsis added here, as Rav Chayyim deleted a few words from his quote.

¹²¹³ Our editions of Berakhot have “his father and his mother and his teacher”

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And in *Sh’mote Rabba* (chapter 40): “If someone knows Torah and doesn’t behave in accordance with it, it would have been better for him if he’d never come into the world, that the placenta smothered him.” And so it is in *Va-yikra Rabba* (*parsha* 35), and in *Tahn-khooma parshat Eikev*.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And in *Zohar Sh’mote* (5b, top of page): “Rabbee Yehuda stated: ‘Anyone who involves himself with Torah in this world, and who considers good works to be a highly valued treasure¹²¹⁵, inherits a complete world. And one who involves himself with Torah in this world but does not do good works, does not inherit, neither this¹²¹⁶ nor that¹²¹⁷…’. Rabbee Yitzkhak stated: ‘We learned this applies only for someone who has no good works at all’.”

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
[This is true] even to the point that they stated in the first chapter of *Avoda Za-ra* (17b): “‘Anyone who only involves himself with Torah could be compared to someone who has no God-*Elo”ha’*’, for without fulfilling the *mitzvote* (heaven forefend), there is nothing to which the light of Torah can attach nor connect, to settle upon, nor in which it can be manifested. It can be compared to an illuminating flame not having a wick; indeed the *mitzva* receives the essence of the light from the letters in the Torah that are written about it.

[Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 30:11](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Nefesh%20HaChayim/s/Gate%20IV/r/30:11)

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And this is what they stated in *parshhat Ha-Torah* (Avot 6:7): “Torah is great in that it gives life to those who put it into practice”, and it didn’t say “to those who learn it” or “to those who are involved with it”—it says “to those who put it into practice”. It intends to convey that it’s the Torah that also gives eternal life and holiness to those who perform the *mitzvote* written within it, and for that reason they stated in *Tahn-khooma B’khoo-ko-tai*, that even if he is righteous¹²¹⁸ but doesn’t involve himself with Torah, he hasn’t accomplished anything¹²¹⁹ (heaven forefend).

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And the reason for this is also as was explained previously¹²²⁰, that the *mitzvote*, in the source of their root, are connected and dependent upon the design of the components of the Vehicle: the worlds and the supernal powers. And the supernal source of the root of the holy Torah is very lofty, above the totality of all the worlds and the powers. And it unfolds downward within them all, and they receive from it the essence of their life force and the overflowing abundance of their holiness. For that reason it is the provider of, and what impresses, life force, holiness and light upon all of the *mitzvote*.
