**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And also for this reason, involvement with Torah atones for all of a sinning soul-*Neffesh*’s sins, as they (OBM) stated (at the end of *M’na-khote* 110a): “Why is it written (Vayikra 7:37) ‘This is the Torah of the burnt-offering, of the meal-offering and the sin-offering…’, and they deduce that anyone who is involved with Torah has no need for a burnt-offering, nor a meal-offering, nor a sin-offering, nor a guilt-offering. And so it’s written in *Tahn-khooma parshat Tzav*, and in *Sh’mote Rabba parsha* 38: “‘Take words with you, and return to God-*YHV”H*’ (*Hoshei-ah* 14:3)—…because Israel says… we are destitute and we have nothing from which we can bring sacrifices. The Holy One (blessed be He) said to them: ‘It is words I ask of you… and I forgive all your sins’. And ‘words’ are none other than words of Torah… .” And in *Tahn-khooma Va-yahk-heil*¹²²¹ in the context of the Ark¹²²² they stated that it bears the sins of Israel—that the Torah within it bears the sins of Israel.

And in *Tahna D’vei Eliyahu*, *Seder Eliyahu Rabba*, chapter 5: “A person who transgressed many sins and the court imposed a death sentence…, and he returned and repented, and reads Torah, Prophets and Writings, and learned *Mishna* and *Midrash Ha-la-khote* and *Ha-gadote*, and served scholars, even if a hundred decrees were pronounced upon him, the Holy One (blessed be He) removes them from him…”.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And in *Zohar Sh’lahkh* (159a): “Rabbee Yehuda began… ‘It is important for people to deeply contemplate the Holy One’s (blessed be He) work. It’s important for people to deeply contemplate the words of the Torah, for anyone who is involved with Torah is as if he offers all of the sacrifices in the world before the Holy One (blessed be He). And not only that, but the Holy One (blessed be He) awards atonement for all of his obligations, and they prepare for him a number of thrones in the world-to-come’.”

And also those serious sins for which sacrifices do not atone, involvement with Torah atones, as our sages (OBM) stated in regards to the sons of Eli (Rosh Hashanah 18a): “The sin can’t be atoned for by a sacrifice or a meal offering, but it can be atoned for by Torah study”. And so too they stated (Megilah 3b): “The study of Torah is even greater than the daily sacrifices.”

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
And in *Zohar Tzav* (35a): “Come and observe…, because of that, one who labors in Torah doesn’t need sacrifices nor offerings, for the Torah is better than all of them and connects all the parts of *ehmoona*¹²²³ of *Ah-tzeeloot* are called *ehmoona* (lit.: reliable, faithful).. And regarding this it is written (Mishlei 3:7): ‘…and her paths are all paths of pleasantness’. And in *parshat K’doshim* (80b): “‘With sacrifice and offering…’—but he is atoned for with words of Torah. Why? Because the words of the Torah rise above all the sacrifices in the world, as they asserted, for it is written (Vayikra 7:36): ‘This is the Torah for the burnt-offering, the meal-offering and the sin-offering…’—Torah is considered equal to all the sacrifices in the world. He¹²²⁴ said to him: it’s exactly as you explain, that anyone who involves himself with Torah, even though punishments have been decreed upon him from above, he provides greater pleasure than all the sacrifices and offerings, and that punishment is torn up. And come and observe: a person is never refined of his sins except via words of Torah… . And the Torah is called ‘holy’, for it is written (Vayikra 20:26): ‘For I God-*YHV”H* am holy’—this is the Torah because it is the holy supernal name. And regarding this [is written that] one who involves himself with it is refined, and later is made holy… . This teaches us that the holiness of the Torah is a holiness that rises above all other kinds of holiness.”

And in *Midrash Ha-neh-eh-lam Va-yeira*¹²²⁵ (100a) they stated: “The sacrifices were annulled; Torah was not annulled. Therefore, one who is unable to be involved with sacrifices should involve himself with Torah, and this will yield even better results…, for Rabbee Yokhanan stated: ‘When the Holy One (blessed be He) explained the sacrifices Moshe said: “Master of the World—this will suffice when Israel dwells in their land. What will they do when they are exiled from their land?” He said to him: “Moshe, they should involve themselves with Torah and I will forgive them on its [fem.] account, even more than all the sacrifices in the world, for it is written: ‘This is the Torah for the burnt-offering, the meal-offering and the sin-offering…’—this Torah is in place of the burntoffering; this Torah is in place of the meal-offering...”.’ Rav Kros-p’da-ee stated: ‘One who verbally recalls the matter of the sacrifices in the synagogues and study halls… a covenant was established that the angels who are appointed to mention his obligations to cause evil to befall him can’t do evil to him, only good’.”

And that stated furthermore in the second chapter of Berakhot (16a) and in *Tahna D’vei Eliyahu*, *Seder Eliya Rabba* (chapter 25¹²²⁶.): “Why are brooks¹²²⁷ mentioned in close proximity to tents¹²²⁸. Tents are used here as a metaphor for Torah study halls. This verse in Bamidbar actually uses the word *k’ah-haw-lim*, which translates as “like aloes”, while the *G’mara* comments on it as if it were written as *k’o-haw-lim* which translates as “like tents”. Perhaps, the *G’mara*’s reference to tents is to the previous verse (24:5) in Bamidbar (see *Torah T’mima*, *Tosafote RA”Sh*)., as is written (Bamidbar 24:6): ‘stretching out like brooks…, like tents pitched by God-*YHV”H’?* To tell you that just as streams raise a person from a state of spiritual impurity to spiritual purity, so too tents raise a person from a state of obligation to a state of merit.” And there¹²²⁹, *Seder Eliya Rabba* in chapter 18: “‘Pour your heart out like water’—Just as those waters are a pure immersion pool for Israel and to everything created in the world…, so too the words of Torah are a pure immersion pool for Israel wherever they settle. Come and observe how great is Torah’s power, that it spiritually purifies the sinners of Israel when they repent, even from their acts of idol worship, for it states (Yechezkel 37:25): ‘And I will sprinkle pure water upon you, and you shall be purified…’.” Refer there [for more details].”

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
For the essence of true complete repentance that arises out of love is only via involvement with Torah to the level it deserves¹²³⁰, as is written in the chapter of the levels of Torah (Avot, chapter 6): “…loves the *Ma-kome*”, and as is written “Return us, our Father, to your Torah… and restore us before you with a complete repentance”.

And in *Zohar Va-yikra* (21a): “When a person distances himself from the Torah, he is far from the Holy One (blessed be He). And one who comes closer to the Torah, the Holy One (blessed be He) brings him closer to Him.” For the love of Torah will cover up all sins¹²³¹), as is written in *Tahna D’vei Eliyahu*, *Seder Eliyahu Rabba* (chapter 3) on this verse (Mishlei 10:12)¹²³². And so too they wrote in *P’tee-kha-ta Eikha* (2): “The lamp with which he is returned to good condition”. And in *Perek Heh-kha-leel* (*Sukka* 52b): “If that revolting one¹²³³ engages you, drag him to the study hall; if he is a stone, he will dissolve... .” And they said something similar to this in *Tahn-khooma*, *parshat Ha-ah-zeenu*, refer there [for more details]. And in *Bereshit Rabba* (*parsha* 22): “If your inclination comes to wear you down, entertain him with words of Torah”.

**The Soul of Life, translated by Leonard Moskowitz, Teaneck, NJ 2012 [Rev. 1.5]:**
This is what is stated in *Parshat Ha-Torah* (Avot, chapter 6): “and he will become as a spring that overcomes and goes on its way”. And there’s room to also explain it relative to this matter mentioned above, that just as a spring gushes and splits anything in its path, even though at times it’s mired and clogged by large amounts of mud and clay, even so it gushes and unblocks its path, and overcomes and flows slowly but surely, until after many days it overcomes and is fully and completely revealed, and flows as before. So too one who is involved with Torah for its own sake, even if he is at first soiled with awesome transgressions and sins, and is very mired in the depths of the mud and clay (may the Merciful save us), even so, via involvement with the Torah, his heart/ mind will be surely set aright, for the lamp within it will certainly return him to good condition, and the good will overcome the evil within him little by little, until finally, without a doubt, the good will overcome and flow in every part of him completely, and he will be sanctified from his spiritual impurity, and spiritual purity will flower in every part of him.
