הראהו הקב"ה שעתידין לפול בניו בעי. רש"י הביא נתנבא שעתידין בניו להכשל שם על עון עכן והתפלל שם עליהם, ובב"ר סוף פל"ט כלום בנה אברהם מזבח בעי אלא שלא יפלו בניו בעי:

וכשהקריב לבוא למצרים היה נהר כו' וראה את שוקה. רש"י עה"ת הביא וז"ל מדרש אגדה עד עכשיו לא הכיר בה מתוך צניעות שבשניהם, ועכשיו הכיר בה על ידי מעשה וראיתי בפי' רבינו יהודה ב"ר אליעזר (ריב"א) שהביא דאיתא במדרש דעבהר נהרא וגלתה שוקה ומתוך כך הכיר ביפיה, ולא נמצא מאומה מזה במדרש ב"ר, רק בתנחומא הנדפס מכבר לך אות ה' כיון שהגיעו לפילי של מצרים ועמדו על היאור ראה אברהם בבואה של שרה באותה נהר כחמה זורחת, ועיי' ביב"ע בראשי' י"ב י"א:
