###### Numbers 12:1

וַתְּדַבֵּ֨ר מִרְיָ֤ם וְאַהֲרֹן֙ בְּמֹשֶׁ֔ה עַל־אֹד֛וֹת הָאִשָּׁ֥ה הַכֻּשִׁ֖ית אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָקָ֑ח כִּֽי־אִשָּׁ֥ה כֻשִׁ֖ית לָקָֽח׃

**Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009:**
Miriam and Aharon spoke about Moshe concerning the Cushite woman that he married, for, he married a Cushite woman.

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And Miryam and Aharon spoke against Moshe because of the Kushite woman whom he had taken, for he had taken a Kushite woman.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of [his divorcing] the Cushite woman [(Zipporah, called "Cushite" because she was extremely beautiful in all respects)] that he had taken; for he had taken a Cushite woman, [and now he had divorced her]. [Miriam was with Tzipporah when Moses was told that Eldad and Medad were prophesying in the camp, and she heard her exclaim: "Woe to the wives of these men upon whom prophesy has been conferred, and who will separate from their wives just as my husband (Moses) has separated from me!" Miriam thereupon apprised Aaron of this, (wherefore, being the initiator of the talk against Moses, she is mentioned first)].

וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ הֲרַ֤ק אַךְ־בְּמֹשֶׁה֙ דִּבֶּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה הֲלֹ֖א גַּם־בָּ֣נוּ דִבֵּ֑ר וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע יְהֹוָֽה׃

They said: “Is it only to Moshe that Adonoy has spoken? Did He not also speak with us?” and Adonoy heard.

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And they said, Has the Lord indeed spoken only with Moshe? has he not spoken also with us? And the Lord heard it.

And they said: Is it only with Moses that the L-rd has spoken? Has He not spoken also with us? [and we have not separated from our spouses!] And the L-rd heard.


###### Numbers 12:3

וְהָאִ֥ישׁ מֹשֶׁ֖ה עָנָ֣ו מְאֹ֑ד מִכֹּל֙ הָֽאָדָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃{ס}

The man, Moshe [was] most humble, more so than any other person on the face of the earth.

(Now the man Moshe was very meek, more so than all the men that were upon the face of the earth.)

And the man Moses was extremely humble [lowly and forbearing], more than any man on the face of the earth.


###### Numbers 12:4

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה פִּתְאֹ֗ם אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֤ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹן֙ וְאֶל־מִרְיָ֔ם צְא֥וּ שְׁלׇשְׁתְּכֶ֖ם אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וַיֵּצְא֖וּ שְׁלׇשְׁתָּֽם׃

Adonoy said, suddenly, to Moshe, Aharon and Miriam: “Come out, all three of you, to the Tent of Meeting,” and the three of them went out.

And the Lord spoke suddenly to Moshe, and to Aharon, and to Miryam, Come out you three to the Tent of Meeting. And they three came out.

And the L-rd said suddenly to Moses, to Aaron, and to Miriam ["suddenly," when they (Aaron and Miriam) were unclean through intercourse, and they cried for water (to purify themselves with) — this, by way of impressing upon them that Moses being constantly ("suddenly") subject to a visitation by the Shechinah, did well in separating himself from his wife] (The L-rd said:) The three of you go out to the tent of meeting [(the three were called by a single utterance, something which (within the framework of nature) the mouth is not capable of uttering nor the ear of hearing)]; and the three of them went out.

וַיֵּ֤רֶד יְהֹוָה֙ בְּעַמּ֣וּד עָנָ֔ן וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד פֶּ֣תַח הָאֹ֑הֶל וַיִּקְרָא֙ אַהֲרֹ֣ן וּמִרְיָ֔ם וַיֵּצְא֖וּ שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃

Adonoy descended in a pillar of cloud and He stood at the entrance of the Tent, and He called [to] Aharon and Miriam, and both of them went out.

And the Lord came down in the pillar of cloud, and stood in the door of the tent, and called Aharon and Miryam: and they both came out.

And the L-rd descended in a pillar of cloud, and He stood at the door of the tent, and He called Aaron and Miriam [to separate them from Moses, (all of a man's praise not being mentioned to his face, see Genesis 7:1)], and the two of them came forth.


###### Numbers 12:6

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שִׁמְעוּ־נָ֣א דְבָרָ֑י אִם־יִֽהְיֶה֙ נְבִ֣יאֲכֶ֔ם יְהֹוָ֗ה בַּמַּרְאָה֙ אֵלָ֣יו אֶתְוַדָּ֔ע בַּחֲל֖וֹם אֲדַבֶּר־בּֽוֹ׃

He said: “Please listen to My words. If there will be a prophet among you, [I,] Adonoy, will make Myself known to him in a vision; in a dream I will speak to him.

And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision, and speak to him in a dream.

And He said: Hear, I pray you, My words. If there be prophets among you, "the L-rd" [i.e., the immanence of My Name] I invest him with in a vision; in a dream I speak to him.


###### Numbers 12:7

לֹא־כֵ֖ן עַבְדִּ֣י מֹשֶׁ֑ה בְּכׇל־בֵּיתִ֖י נֶאֱמָ֥ן הֽוּא׃

That is not the case with My servant, Moshe; in My entire house he is trusted.

My servant Moshe is not so, for he is the trusted one in all my house.

Not so My servant Moses. In all My house he is trusted.


###### Numbers 12:8

פֶּ֣ה אֶל־פֶּ֞ה אֲדַבֶּר־בּ֗וֹ וּמַרְאֶה֙ וְלֹ֣א בְחִידֹ֔ת וּתְמֻנַ֥ת יְהֹוָ֖ה יַבִּ֑יט וּמַדּ֙וּעַ֙ לֹ֣א יְרֵאתֶ֔ם לְדַבֵּ֖ר בְּעַבְדִּ֥י בְמֹשֶֽׁה׃

**Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009:**
Mouth to mouth I speak to him, in a vision and not in riddles; he gazes at the likeness of Adonoy; so why are you not afraid to speak about My servant, about Moshe?”

With him I speak mouth to mouth, manifestly, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the Lord does he behold: why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moshe?

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
Mouth to mouth I spoke to him [i.e., I told him to separate from his wife (see Deuteronomy 5:27-28)], and [in clear] revelation [of My words], and not in riddles; and the configuration [i.e., the "back" (see Exodus 33:23)] of the L-rd does he behold. Why, then, did you not fear to speak against My servant, [even if he were not Moses], against Moses, [even if he were not My servant]!


###### Numbers 12:9

וַיִּֽחַר־אַ֧ף יְהֹוָ֛ה בָּ֖ם וַיֵּלַֽךְ׃

Adonoy’s anger flared against them and He left.

And the anger of the Lord was inflamed against them; and he departed.

And the wrath of the L-rd burned against them, and He departed. [After apprising them of their wrongdoing, He placed them under the ban (whence it is to be derived that one may not manifest anger against his neighbor until he informs him of his guilt.)]


###### Numbers 12:10

וְהֶעָנָ֗ן סָ֚ר מֵעַ֣ל הָאֹ֔הֶל וְהִנֵּ֥ה מִרְיָ֖ם מְצֹרַ֣עַת כַּשָּׁ֑לֶג וַיִּ֧פֶן אַהֲרֹ֛ן אֶל־מִרְיָ֖ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה מְצֹרָֽעַת׃

**Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009:**
The cloud departed from atop the Tent and behold! Miriam became afflicted with *tzora’as* white as snow; and Aharon turned towards Miriam and behold, she was afflicted with *tzora’as.*

And the cloud was removed from the tent; and, behold, Miryam was snow white, stricken with żara῾at; and Aharon looked upon Miryam, and behold, she was diseased.

And after the cloud had departed from above the tent — behold, Miriam was as leprous as the snow. [("after the cloud had departed":) As a king would say to a pedagogue: "Punish my son — but wait until I have gone."] And Aaron turned to Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous.


###### Numbers 12:11

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אַהֲרֹ֖ן אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֑ה בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י אַל־נָ֨א תָשֵׁ֤ת עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ חַטָּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֥ר נוֹאַ֖לְנוּ וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר חָטָֽאנוּ׃

Aharon said to Moshe: “Oh, my master please do not put iniquity upon us for what we have foolishly done and for what we have transgressed.

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And Aharon said to Moshe, Alas, my lord, I pray thee, lay no sin upon us, for we have done foolishly, and we have sinned.

And Aaron said to Moses: Pray, my lord, do not impute transgression to us in that we have been foolish and have sinned.


###### Numbers 12:12

אַל־נָ֥א תְהִ֖י כַּמֵּ֑ת אֲשֶׁ֤ר בְּצֵאתוֹ֙ מֵרֶ֣חֶם אִמּ֔וֹ וַיֵּאָכֵ֖ל חֲצִ֥י בְשָׂרֽוֹ׃

**Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009:**
Please let her not be like the dead; That, since he came from his mother’s womb, it would be as half of his own flesh was consumed.”

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
Let her [this, our sister,] not be as a dead one [(a leper is reckoned as a dead one, both the leprous and the dead causing uncleanliness by entry (into their domain)]. Since he [the "dead one"] comes out of his [brother's] mother's womb, [then if that brother is in a position to help and does not,] it is as if half his (the latter's) flesh had been consumed, [his brother being his "flesh" (Genesis 37:27)].

וַיִּצְעַ֣ק מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֶל־יְהֹוָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר אֵ֕ל נָ֛א רְפָ֥א נָ֖א לָֽהּ׃{פ}

Moshe cried out [in prayer] to Adonoy, saying: “Please, God, please heal her.”

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And Moshe cried to the Lord, saying, Heal her now, O God, I pray thee.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And Moses cried out to the L-rd to say [whether He would heal her or not]: "G-d, I beseech You; heal her, I beseech You." [(whence it is derived that one who asks a favor of his friend should begin with several words of imploration)] [Moses was not "profuse" in prayer, so that Israel not say of him: "His sister is in distress and he stretches out his prayer!"]


###### Numbers 12:14

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה וְאָבִ֙יהָ֙ יָרֹ֤ק יָרַק֙ בְּפָנֶ֔יהָ הֲלֹ֥א תִכָּלֵ֖ם שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים תִּסָּגֵ֞ר שִׁבְעַ֤ת יָמִים֙ מִח֣וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה וְאַחַ֖ר תֵּאָסֵֽף׃

**Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009:**
Adonoy said to Moshe: “If her father were to spit in her face would she not be in shame for seven days? She shall be closed off for seven days, beyond the encampment, and after that, she may join again.”

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And the Lord said to Moshe, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed for seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
And the L-rd said to Moses [This is G-d's "answer" (13)]: Now if her father had spat in her face, would she not be in shame for seven days? [How much more, if the Shechinah "does so"!] Let her be sequestered seven days outside the camp, and then [like a leper who is healed of his leprosy] let her be gathered in.


###### Numbers 12:15

וַתִּסָּגֵ֥ר מִרְיָ֛ם מִח֥וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים וְהָעָם֙ לֹ֣א נָסַ֔ע עַד־הֵאָסֵ֖ף מִרְיָֽם׃

Miriam was closed off beyond the encampment for seven days, and the people did not depart until Miriam was brought in to join them.

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
And Miryam was shut out from the camp seven days: and the people did not journey until Miryam was brought in again.

And Miriam was sequestered outside the camp seven days, and the people did not journey until Miriam had been gathered in. [G-d accorded her this honor because of the brief time she had detained herself on Moses' behalf when he had been cast into the Nile (Exodus 2:4)].

After that, the people traveled from Chatzeiros and they camped in the desert of Paran.

And afterwards the people removed from Ḥażerot, and pitched in the wilderness of Paran.

And afterwards the people traveled from Chatzeiroth, and they encamped in the desert of Paran.
