אֱמֹ֨ר אֶל־אֶלְעָזָ֜ר בֶּן־אַהֲרֹ֣ן הַכֹּהֵ֗ן וְיָרֵ֤ם אֶת־הַמַּחְתֹּת֙ מִבֵּ֣ין הַשְּׂרֵפָ֔ה וְאֶת־הָאֵ֖שׁ זְרֵה־הָ֑לְאָה כִּ֖י קָדֵֽשׁוּ׃

“Say to Elazar the son of Aharon, the *kohein* and have him lift up the firepans from the inferno, and you, scatter the fire yonder, for, they were sanctified;

Speak to El῾azar the son of Aharon the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they have become holy.

Tell Elazar the son of Aaron the Cohein to lift the fire-pans from the conflagration and to scatter the fire (i.e., the coals) [in the fire-pans to the ground], for they the [fire-pans] have been consecrated [as ministering vessels (and may not be used for profane purposes)] —

אֵ֡ת מַחְתּוֹת֩ הַֽחַטָּאִ֨ים הָאֵ֜לֶּה בְּנַפְשֹׁתָ֗ם וְעָשׂ֨וּ אֹתָ֜ם רִקֻּעֵ֤י פַחִים֙ צִפּ֣וּי לַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ כִּֽי־הִקְרִיבֻ֥ם לִפְנֵֽי־יְהֹוָ֖ה וַיִּקְדָּ֑שׁוּ וְיִֽהְי֥וּ לְא֖וֹת לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

[These] firepans of these sinners [who paid] with their souls, and make them into hammered sheets to overlay the altar, for they were brought in offering before Adonoy and they were sanctified; and they shall be for a sign for Bnei Yisroel.

As for the censers of these sinners against their own lives, let them make them into beaten plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the Lord, therefore they have become holy: and they shall be a sign to the children of Yisra᾽el.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
The fire-pans of these who have forfeited their lives [by defying the L-rd] — and they shall beat them into plates (as a) covering for the [copper] altar, for they presented them before the L-rd and they were consecrated; and they shall be a sign [i.e., a "memorial"] for the children of Israel, [viz.: "These (plates) came from those who contested the priesthood and were burned."]

וַיִּקַּ֞ח אֶלְעָזָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֗ן אֵ֚ת מַחְתּ֣וֹת הַנְּחֹ֔שֶׁת אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִקְרִ֖יבוּ הַשְּׂרֻפִ֑ים וַֽיְרַקְּע֖וּם צִפּ֥וּי לַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃

Elazar the *kohein,* took the copper firepans, those that the fire victims brought and hammered them into a covering for the altar,

And El῾azar the priest took the brazen censers, wherewith they that were burnt had offered; and they made them into beaten plates for a covering of the altar:

And Elazar the Cohein took the copper fire-pans which the burned ones had presented, and he beat them into plating for the altar.

זִכָּר֞וֹן לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל לְ֠מַ֠עַן אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא־יִקְרַ֜ב אִ֣ישׁ זָ֗ר אֲ֠שֶׁ֠ר לֹ֣א מִזֶּ֤רַע אַהֲרֹן֙ ה֔וּא לְהַקְטִ֥יר קְטֹ֖רֶת לִפְנֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וְלֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֤ה כְקֹ֙רַח֙ וְכַ֣עֲדָת֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֧ר יְהֹוָ֛ה בְּיַד־מֹשֶׁ֖ה לֽוֹ׃{פ}

to be a reminder for Bnei Yisroel so that a commoner shall never offer, one who is not a descendant of Aharon, to burn incense before Adonoy; so as not to be like Korach and his congregation; as Adonoy spoke to him, through Moshe.

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
to be a memorial to the children of Yisra᾽el, that no stranger, who is not of the seed of Aharon, come near to offer incense before the Lord: that he be not like Qoraĥ and his company: as the Lord said to him by the hand of Moshe.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
A sign for the children of Israel, so that a stranger, who is not of the seed of Aaron, not draw near to smoke incense before the L-rd, so that he not be like Korach and his congregation, as the L-rd spoke to Moses about him [Aaron, viz., that he and his sons are to be Cohanim].

וַיִּלֹּ֜נוּ כׇּל־עֲדַ֤ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מִֽמׇּחֳרָ֔ת עַל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹ֑ר אַתֶּ֥ם הֲמִתֶּ֖ם אֶת־עַ֥ם יְהֹוָֽה׃

They complained—the entire congregation of Bnei Yisroel—on the next day against Moshe and Aharon, saying: “You have killed the people of Adonoy”

But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Yisra᾽el murmured against Moshe and against Aharon, saying, You have killed the people of the Lord.

וַיְהִ֗י בְּהִקָּהֵ֤ל הָֽעֵדָה֙ עַל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹ֔ן וַיִּפְנוּ֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד וְהִנֵּ֥ה כִסָּ֖הוּ הֶעָנָ֑ן וַיֵּרָ֖א כְּב֥וֹד יְהֹוָֽה׃

When the congregation assembled against Moshe and Aharon, they turned to the Tent of Meeting and behold! The cloud covered it, and the Glory of Adonoy appeared.

And it came to pass, when the congregation was gathered against Moshe and against Aharon, that they looked toward the Tent of Meeting: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the Lord appeared.

הֵרֹ֗מּוּ מִתּוֹךְ֙ הָעֵדָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את וַאֲכַלֶּ֥ה אֹתָ֖ם כְּרָ֑גַע וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ עַל־פְּנֵיהֶֽם׃

“Remove yourselves from this congregation and I shall annihalate them in an instant,” and they fell upon their faces.

Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.

Remove yourselves from the midst of this congregation and I will consume them this instant; and they fell on their faces.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֗ן קַ֣ח אֶת־הַ֠מַּחְתָּ֠ה וְתֶן־עָלֶ֨יהָ אֵ֜שׁ מֵעַ֤ל הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ וְשִׂ֣ים קְטֹ֔רֶת וְהוֹלֵ֧ךְ מְהֵרָ֛ה אֶל־הָעֵדָ֖ה וְכַפֵּ֣ר עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם כִּֽי־יָצָ֥א הַקֶּ֛צֶף מִלִּפְנֵ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה הֵחֵ֥ל הַנָּֽגֶף׃

Moshe said to Aharon: “Take the firepan and put fire from atop the altar on it and place incense on it, and go quickly to the congregation and atone for them, for anger has come forth from before Adonoy; the plague has commenced.”

And Moshe said to Aharon. Take a censer, and put fire in it from off the altar, and put on incense, and take it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them: for wrath is gone out from the Lord; the plague has begun.

And Moses said to Aaron: Take the fire-pan and place upon it fire from the altar, and put incense (upon it) and take (it) quickly to the congregation and atone for them [(This secret was given to him by the angel of death when he ascended to heaven — that the incense aborts the plague)], for the wrath has gone forth from the L-rd; the plague has begun.

וַיִּקַּ֨ח אַהֲרֹ֜ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר**׀** דִּבֶּ֣ר מֹשֶׁ֗ה וַיָּ֙רׇץ֙ אֶל־תּ֣וֹךְ הַקָּהָ֔ל וְהִנֵּ֛ה הֵחֵ֥ל הַנֶּ֖גֶף בָּעָ֑ם וַיִּתֵּן֙ אֶֽת־הַקְּטֹ֔רֶת וַיְכַפֵּ֖ר עַל־הָעָֽם׃

Aharon took, just as Moshe spoke, and he ran to the middle of the assembly and behold! The plague had commenced among the people. He put on incense and he atoned for the people.

And Aharon took as Moshe commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague had begun among the people: and he put on incense, and made atonement for the people.

###### Numbers 17:14

וַיִּהְי֗וּ הַמֵּתִים֙ בַּמַּגֵּפָ֔ה אַרְבָּעָ֥ה עָשָׂ֛ר אֶ֖לֶף וּשְׁבַ֣ע מֵא֑וֹת מִלְּבַ֥ד הַמֵּתִ֖ים עַל־דְּבַר־קֹֽרַח׃

The dead in the plague totaled fourteen thousand seven hundred, excluding those who died due to Korach’s rebellion.

Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand, seven hundred, besides those who died about the matter of Qoraĥ.

Aharon returned to Moshe to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and the plague was halted.

וְאֵת֙ שֵׁ֣ם אַהֲרֹ֔ן תִּכְתֹּ֖ב עַל־מַטֵּ֣ה לֵוִ֑י כִּ֚י מַטֶּ֣ה אֶחָ֔ד לְרֹ֖אשׁ בֵּ֥ית אֲבוֹתָֽם׃

You shall write the name of Aharon on the staff of Levi, for, [there is] one staff for the head of their fathers’ house.

And thou shalt write Aharon’s name upon the rod of Levi: for one rod shall be for the head of the house of their fathers.

You shall leave them inside the Tent of Meeting before the testimony where there I meet you.

וְהָיָ֗ה הָאִ֛ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֶבְחַר־בּ֖וֹ מַטֵּ֣הוּ יִפְרָ֑ח וַהֲשִׁכֹּתִ֣י מֵֽעָלַ֗י אֶת־תְּלֻנּוֹת֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֛ר הֵ֥ם מַלִּינִ֖ם עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃

It shall be that the man whom I choose, his staff shall blossom; and I will abate from Myself the complaints of Bnei Yisroel that they complain against you.”

And it shall come to pass, that the man’s rod, whom I shall choose, shall blossom: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Yisra᾽el, whereby they murmur against you.

וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיִּתְּנ֣וּ אֵלָ֣יו׀כׇּֽל־נְשִׂיאֵיהֶ֡ם מַטֶּה֩ לְנָשִׂ֨יא אֶחָ֜ד מַטֶּ֨ה לְנָשִׂ֤יא אֶחָד֙ לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֔ם שְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר מַטּ֑וֹת וּמַטֵּ֥ה אַהֲרֹ֖ן בְּת֥וֹךְ מַטּוֹתָֽם׃

Moshe spoke to Bnei Yisroel and all the leaders gave to him a staff for each leader; a staff for each leader, according to their fathers’ house, twelve staffs, and the staff of Aharon [was] among their staffs.

And Moshe spoke to the children of Yisra᾽el, and every one of their princes gave him a rod apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses: twelve rods: and the rod of Aharon was among their rods.

וַיְהִ֣י מִֽמׇּחֳרָ֗ת וַיָּבֹ֤א מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל הָעֵד֔וּת וְהִנֵּ֛ה פָּרַ֥ח מַטֵּֽה־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לְבֵ֣ית לֵוִ֑י וַיֹּ֤צֵֽא פֶ֙רַח֙ וַיָּ֣צֵֽץ צִ֔יץ וַיִּגְמֹ֖ל שְׁקֵדִֽים׃

It was on the next day, Moshe came inside the Tent of the Testimony, and behold! The staff of Aharon blossomed for the house of Levi, a blossom came forth, and bloomed buds and bore ripe almonds.

And it came to pass, that on the morrow Moshe went into the tent of the Testimony: and, behold, the rod of Aharon for the house of Levi had sprouted, and brought forth buds, and blossomed, and yielded almonds.
