###### Numbers 9:1

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֣ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה בְמִדְבַּר־סִ֠ינַ֠י בַּשָּׁנָ֨ה הַשֵּׁנִ֜ית לְצֵאתָ֨ם מֵאֶ֧רֶץ מִצְרַ֛יִם בַּחֹ֥דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁ֖וֹן לֵאמֹֽר׃

Adonoy spoke to Moshe in the desert of Sinai in the second year of their exodus from the land of Egypt, in the first month, saying;

And the Lord spoke to Moshe in the wilderness of Sinay, in the first month of the second year after they were come out of the land of Miżrayim, saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai in the second year after their going out from the land of Egypt, in the first month (Nissan), saying: [(Bamidbar begins with the second month (1:1) — whence it is derived that "there is no before and after (i.e., strict chronological sequence) in the Torah." (It does not begin with this section for it is disparaging to Israel that all the forty years that they were in the desert they offered only this one Paschal sacrifice.)]

וְיַעֲשׂ֧וּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶת־הַפָּ֖סַח בְּמוֹעֲדֽוֹ׃

Bnei Yisroel shall perform the *Pesach*-offering in its proper time.

Let the children of Yisra᾽el also keep the passover at its appointed season.

The children of Israel shall offer the Pesach in its appointed time, [even on the Sabbath, even in a state of (communal) uncleanliness].

On the fourteenth day of this month, in the afternoon, you shall perform it in its proper time; according to all its statutes and according to all its laws you shall perform it.

In the fourteenth day of this month, at evening, you shall keep it in its appointed season: according to all the rites of it, and according to all the ceremonies of it, shall you keep it.

**The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
On the fourteenth day of this month, towards evening shall you offer it, in its appointed time. According to all of its statutes [the mitzvoth relating directly to its body] and according to all its [attendant] ordinances shall you offer it.


###### Numbers 9:4

Moshe spoke to Bnei Yisroel [telling them] to perform the Pesach-offering.

וַיַּעֲשׂ֣וּ אֶת־הַפֶּ֡סַח בָּרִאשׁ֡וֹן בְּאַרְבָּעָה֩ עָשָׂ֨ר י֥וֹם לַחֹ֛דֶשׁ בֵּ֥ין הָעַרְבַּ֖יִם בְּמִדְבַּ֣ר סִינָ֑י כְּ֠כֹ֠ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֤ה יְהֹוָה֙ אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֔ה כֵּ֥ן עָשׂ֖וּ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

They performed the Pesach-offering in the first [month] on the fourteenth day of the month in the afternoon in the Sinai desert; according to all that Adonoy commanded Moshe, so did Bnei Yisroel do.

And they kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month at evening in the wilderness of Sinay: according to all that the Lord commanded Moshe, so did the children of Yisra᾽el.

And they offered the Pesach in the first (month) on the fourteenth day of the month, towards evening, in the desert of Sinai. According to all that the L-rd had commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel do.

וַיְהִ֣י אֲנָשִׁ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָי֤וּ טְמֵאִים֙ לְנֶ֣פֶשׁ אָדָ֔ם וְלֹא־יָכְל֥וּ לַעֲשֹׂת־הַפֶּ֖סַח בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא וַֽיִּקְרְב֞וּ לִפְנֵ֥י מֹשֶׁ֛ה וְלִפְנֵ֥י אַהֲרֹ֖ן בַּיּ֥וֹם הַהֽוּא׃

There were men who were impure, having had [contact with] a corpse, and they were not able to perform the Pesach-offering on that day, and they drew near before Moshe and before Aharon, on that day.

And there were certain men, who were defiled by the dead body of a man, that could not keep the passover on that day: and they came before Moshe and before Aharon on that day:

And there were men who were unclean by the body of a dead man, and they could not offer the Pesach on that day, and they drew near before Moses and Aaron on that day.

וַ֠יֹּאמְר֠וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֤ים הָהֵ֙מָּה֙ אֵלָ֔יו אֲנַ֥חְנוּ טְמֵאִ֖ים לְנֶ֣פֶשׁ אָדָ֑ם לָ֣מָּה נִגָּרַ֗ע לְבִלְתִּ֨י הַקְרִ֜יב אֶת־קׇרְבַּ֤ן יְהֹוָה֙ בְּמֹ֣עֲד֔וֹ בְּת֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Those men said to him: “We are impure, having had contact with a corpse; why should we be excluded and not be able to bring the offering of Adonoy in its proper time, among Bnei Yisroel?”

and those men said to him, We are defiled by the dead body of a man: why are we kept back, that we may not offer an offering of the Lord in its appointed season among the children of Yisra᾽el?

And those men said to him: We are unclean by the body of a dead man. Why should we be held back, not to offer the sacrifice of the L-rd in its appointed time, in the midst of the children of Israel?

Moshe said to them: “Stand and I will listen to what Adonoy will instruct for you.”

Speak to Bnei Yisroel, saying; any person, if he will be impure from a corpse, or [is] on a distant road, [whether among] yourselves or for your descendants, he shall perform the Pesach-offering for Adonoy

Speak to the children of Yisra᾽el, saying, If any man of you or of your posterity shall be unclean by reason of a dead body, or be on a journey afar off, yet he shall keep the passover to the Lord.

Speak to the children of Israel, saying: A man, if he be unclean by a dead body, or on a distant way [(Not literally "distant"; it is sufficient that he should have been outside the threshold of the azarah all the time of slaughtering.)], of you or of your generations, he shall (yet) offer the Pesach to the L-rd.

בַּחֹ֨דֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִ֜י בְּאַרְבָּעָ֨ה עָשָׂ֥ר י֛וֹם בֵּ֥ין הָעַרְבַּ֖יִם יַעֲשׂ֣וּ אֹת֑וֹ עַל־מַצּ֥וֹת וּמְרֹרִ֖ים יֹאכְלֻֽהוּ׃

in the second month, on the fourteenth day in the afternoon he shall perform it. Together with *matzohs* and bitter herbs they shall eat it.

לֹֽא־יַשְׁאִ֤ירוּ מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ עַד־בֹּ֔קֶר וְעֶ֖צֶם לֹ֣א יִשְׁבְּרוּ־ב֑וֹ כְּכׇל־חֻקַּ֥ת הַפֶּ֖סַח יַעֲשׂ֥וּ אֹתֽוֹ׃

They shall not leave any of it over until the morning and they shall not break any of its bones; according to all the statutes of the Pesach-offering they shall perform it.

They shall leave none of it to the morning, nor break any bone of it: according to all the ordinances of the passover they shall keep it.

וְהָאִישׁ֩ אֲשֶׁר־ה֨וּא טָה֜וֹר וּבְדֶ֣רֶךְ לֹא־הָיָ֗ה וְחָדַל֙ לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת הַפֶּ֔סַח וְנִכְרְתָ֛ה הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ הַהִ֖וא מֵֽעַמֶּ֑יהָ כִּ֣י**׀** קׇרְבַּ֣ן יְהֹוָ֗ה לֹ֤א הִקְרִיב֙ בְּמֹ֣עֲד֔וֹ חֶטְא֥וֹ יִשָּׂ֖א הָאִ֥ישׁ הַהֽוּא׃

The person who is pure and was not on the road, and refrained from performing the Pesach-offering, that soul shall be cut off from its people, for the offering of Adonoy he did not bring in its proper time; that person shall bear his sin.

But the man that is clean, and is not on a journey, and fails to keep the passover, then that person shall be cut off from among his people: because he brought not the offering of the Lord in its appointed season; that man shall bear his sin.

And the man who is clean and was not on the way and who failed to offer the Pesach, that soul shall be cut off from his people; for the sacrifice of the L-rd he did not offer in its appointed time. That man shall bear his sin.

וְכִֽי־יָג֨וּר אִתְּכֶ֜ם גֵּ֗ר וְעָ֤שָֽׂה פֶ֙סַח֙ לַֽיהֹוָ֔ה כְּחֻקַּ֥ת הַפֶּ֛סַח וּכְמִשְׁפָּט֖וֹ כֵּ֣ן יַעֲשֶׂ֑ה חֻקָּ֤ה אַחַת֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה לָכֶ֔ם וְלַגֵּ֖ר וּלְאֶזְרַ֥ח הָאָֽרֶץ׃{ס}

If a proselyte dwells among you and brings the Pesach-offering to Adonoy; according to the statues of the Pesach-offering and according to its laws so shall he perform it; there shall be the same statute for yourselves; [both] for the proselyte and for the native born citizen.

And if a stranger shall sojourn among you, and will keep the passover to the Lord; according to the ordinance of the passover, and according to its prescribed manner, so shall he do: you shall have one ordinance, both for the stranger, and for him that was born in the land.

On the day that the *Mishkon* was erected, the Cloud covered the *Mishkon* [which served] as the Tent of Testimony; and in the evening, there was over the *Mishkon* an appearance of fire, until morning.

And on the day that the tabernacle was erected the cloud covered the tabernacle, namely, the tent of the testimony: and at evening there was upon the tabernacle as it were the appearance of fire, until the morning.

Whenever the Cloud was lifted from the Tent, afterwards, did Bnei Yisroel travel; in the place where the Cloud came to rest, it is there that Bnei Yisroel did camp.

And when the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, then after that the children of Yisra᾽el journeyed: and in the place where the cloud abode, there the children of Yisra᾽el encamped.

עַל־פִּ֣י יְהֹוָ֗ה יִסְעוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְעַל־פִּ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה יַחֲנ֑וּ כׇּל־יְמֵ֗י אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁכֹּ֧ן הֶעָנָ֛ן עַל־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן יַחֲנֽוּ׃

On the word of Adonoy, did Bnei Yisroel travel and on the word of Adonoy, did they camp; all those days on which the Cloud will rested above the *Mishkon*, did they camp.

At the commandment of the Lord the children of Yisra᾽el journeyed, and at the commandment of the Lord they encamped: as long as the cloud abode upon the tabernacle they remained encamped.

By word of the L-rd the children of Israel traveled [The cloud would fold itself up like a beam over the (encampment of) the children of Judah (by word of the L-rd), and did not start moving until Moses said: "Stand, O L-rd!" (see 10:35)], and by word of the L-rd they encamped. [The cloud would ascend as a pillar over the children of Judah and would not spread out (over the mishkan) until Moses said: "Rest, O L-rd, etc." (see 10:36). Thus (23): "By word of the L-rd, at the hand of Moses."] All the days that the cloud abode over the mishkan, they camped.

וּבְהַאֲרִ֧יךְ הֶֽעָנָ֛ן עַל־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֑ים וְשָׁמְר֧וּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶת־מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת יְהֹוָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א יִסָּֽעוּ׃

When the Cloud tarried above the *Mishkon*, for many days, Bnei Yisroel would keep the watch of Adonoy and they would not travel.

And when the cloud tarried long upon the tabernacle many days, then the children of Yisra᾽el kept the charge of the Lord, and journeyed not.

And when the cloud lingered over the mishkan many days, the children of Israel kept the charge of the L-rd and did not travel.


###### Numbers 9:20

וְיֵ֞שׁ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִהְיֶ֧ה הֶֽעָנָ֛ן יָמִ֥ים מִסְפָּ֖ר עַל־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֑ן עַל־פִּ֤י יְהֹוָה֙ יַחֲנ֔וּ וְעַל־פִּ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה יִסָּֽעוּ׃

It sometimes happened that the Cloud was for a number of days above the *Mishkon*; on the order of Adonoy did they camp and on the order of Adonoy did they travel.

And at times it was, that the cloud was a few days upon the tabernacle; according to the commandment of the Lord they remained encamped, and according to the commandment of the Lord they journeyed.

וְיֵ֞שׁ אֲשֶׁר־יִהְיֶ֤ה הֶֽעָנָן֙ מֵעֶ֣רֶב עַד־בֹּ֔קֶר וְנַעֲלָ֧ה הֶֽעָנָ֛ן בַּבֹּ֖קֶר וְנָסָ֑עוּ א֚וֹ יוֹמָ֣ם וָלַ֔יְלָה וְנַעֲלָ֥ה הֶעָנָ֖ן וְנָסָֽעוּ׃

It sometimes happened that the Cloud was [there] [but] from evening until morning, and then the Cloud rose in the morning and they traveled; or, [the Cloud was there] for a day and a night and the Cloud was lifted, and they traveled.

And at times it was, that the cloud abode from evening until morning, and that the cloud was taken up in the morning, then they journeyed: whether it was by day or by night that the cloud was taken up, they journeyed.

And at times the cloud remained from evening until morning, and when the cloud departed in the morning, they traveled. Or a day or a night — when the cloud departed, they traveled.

אֽוֹ־יֹמַ֜יִם אוֹ־חֹ֣דֶשׁ אוֹ־יָמִ֗ים בְּהַאֲרִ֨יךְ הֶעָנָ֤ן עַל־הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ לִשְׁכֹּ֣ן עָלָ֔יו יַחֲנ֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְלֹ֣א יִסָּ֑עוּ וּבְהֵעָלֹת֖וֹ יִסָּֽעוּ׃
