**‏מעשה באדם אחד שהיה בימי שאול מלך ישראל**, (אולי צ״ל שלמה המלך במקום שאול המלך, ושלמה במקום דוד, ולולי זאת אין להמעשה ענין בכאן אצל ספורי שלמה) שהיתה לו אשה יפה ונאה מאד. והיתהעשירה גדולה. והאדם ההוא היה זקן ביותר והגיע זמנו ליפטר לבית עולמו. ובעבור שהאשההיתה נאה, נתן עיניו עליה השר של המדינה והיה רוצה ליקח אותה ביד רמה. והיא לא רצתה בשום סיבה ונכנס פחד בלבה עד אין תכלית. ולקחה כל הממון שלה ונתנה בכדים, ובפי הכדים שמה דבש והפקידתם ביד אדם אחד מכירו ואוהבו של בעלה בפני עדים וברחה מן המדינה.

‏לאחר זמן מה מת אותו השר וחזרה האשה לביתה. והאיש שהיה הפקדון בידו, עשה סעודת אירוסין לבנו ונצטרך לדבש. הלך ומצא אותם הכדים עם דבש ולקח מן הדבש אותו מעט שמצא בפי הכדים. סוף דבר מצא כל הכדים מלאים זהב – מיד לקח הממון ומילא הכדים דבש.

כשחזרה האשה לביתה, הלכה אצל האיש ואמרה לו: "תן לי הפקדון שהנחתי בידיך!"

אמר לה: "לכי והביאי לי העדים שנתת לי הדבש בפניהם וטלי דבר שלך."

והלכה והביאה העדים, והוא הוציא את כל הכלים והחזירם לה בפני העדים הנזכרים.

כשהלכה לביתה, מצאה כל הכלים מלאים דבש. התחילה לצעוק ולבכות. הלכה אצל שופט המדינה וקבלה עליו.

‏יצתה מפניהם בפחי בפש. התחילה לחזור לביתה, פגעה בדוד מלך ישראל והיה נער קטן רועה צאן והוא שרחק עם הנערים. מיד צעקה ואמרה: "בני, קבלתי ולא דנו לי מן האיש שרימני; שמעו דברי ודונו לי בחסדכם!"

הלכה והביאה והריקה הדבש לאותם הכלים. ותפש דוד אותם הכלים ושברם לעיני הקהל; ופשפש ומצא בשברי הכלים במקום אחד שניים זהובים שהיו דבוקים בצלעות הכדים. מיד ענה דוד ואמר לבעל הפקדון: "לך והחזר הפקדון אצל האשה!"
