**yearns to augment, increase, and hoard in** -- corresponding to these three terms, he earlier wrote three terms denoting pain, namely: (1) "he is always pained" - to augment. corresponding to love of pleasure, that whenever he is enjoying something, he is "pained" for augmenting the enjoyment from that thing. (2) state of continual anxiety - to increase. corresponding to love of beneficial things, namely, money and possessions, he will "worry" always to increase his money (3) "saddened and grieving" - to hoard in. corresponding to what he already possesses but which is spread out here and there and causes him mental distraction, he will be mourning to hoard it in. Likewise what his land produces and is outside in his field, he is saddened in that it is not assured from damages until he can bring it to his domain. All this is during the times of prosperity. But during bad times, he is very pained and disturbed,

**because he is disgusted by it** -- corresponding to his taava (love of pleasure), whereby a person is disturbed and repulsed by the matter, either: (1) because of absence of extra things, and on this he wrote: "it is contrary to his desires", or (2) because of absence of necessary things, and this subdivides into two general categories: (a) "nature": That the matter disturbs his nature. For example, one who is of cold nature (i.e. he needs to stay cool), he is disturbed by bearing things which are too warm or vice versa. (b) "traits": That the matter disturbs his traits. For example, one who is hot-tempered is irritated by those who act brazenly against him. And the opposite, one who is of calm nature, is irritated by the company of the hot-tempered.

the intent of the verse is that even though both extremes are bad, because even excessive scattering (donating) is not proper, as the sages said in Ketuvot 50a, since sometimes one will become poor through this. Nevertheless, some do not become poor [by excessive donating], on the contrary he will increase from what he had, but "one that withholds more than is right" this leads only to poverty.

**to also prepare provisions for his end, and needs for his appointed home** -- the word "provisions" applies to what a man will use on a journey, as written (in the exodus from Egypt) "nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves" (Shmos 12:39), or "Prepare provision for yourselves, [for in another three days you will cross this Jordan...]" (Joshua 1:11), and when the soul leaves this world until it reaches its place, it will need provisions, as Rabbi Ploni said (before dying) "the provisions are scanty and the road is long" (Kesuvos 67b). And when the soul arrives to its appointed place, it will be sustained there forever and ever with what it prepared, and on this he wrote "needs for his appointed home".

**he will despise others, slander them, curse them, and hate them** -- He specified four types of denigration corresponding to these four previous divisions. Corresponding to: (1) "any preventing of attaining his desires is caused by them", he wrote: "he will despise them". Corresponding to: (2) that they don't want to assist him in attaining his desires, he wrote: "slander them", since he is upset with them because of this and he speaks bad of them calling them mida sdom (cruel and apathetic), or the like. Corresponding to: (3) "if some harm comes to his money or his children, he will think they caused it", he wrote: "he will curse them". Corresponding to: (4) that they don't want to save him from his troubles, he wrote "and hate them", since according to his view they hate him and rejoice on his troubles, therefore he also hates them.

**he thinks of his death and the arrival of the day of ingathering** -- "thinks of his death", the intent is on the death of the body and the nullification of his [worldly] desires. Thinking of "the arrival of the day of ingathering", the intent is on the ingathering of the soul to its place. Both contemplations are necessary because in remembering the death of the body, he will be repulsed by its desires, while by remembering the ingathering of the soul, he will worry on his sins, which prevent the ascent of the soul to its place.
