**despised and disgraceful is he in his own eyes** -- all of that Psalm speaks of the conduct of a righteous man with other human beings, [such as:] "works righteousness, etc.", "who does not slander with his tongue, etc.", "nor does evil to his friend, etc." Behold the psalmist attributed everything to: "disgraceful is he in his own eyes".

**ליסרו ולהוכיחו**ליסרו על דברים הידועים לעצמו לפועל רע ולהוכיח על פניו בדברים שהוא דן את עצמו לכף זכות. ואמר ליסרו ולהוכיחו ב' בחינות א' שיהיה מיוסר בזה כי גם הבזיון מבני אדם נחשב ליסורין ובחינה ב' להוכיחו כלו' לברר לו ע"י בני אדם שהוא דבר מגונה ואולי היה טועה בו עד הנה ושבור שאין בזה גנות:

**to chasten him and rebuke him** -- To "chasten him" on things he knows are bad. To "rebuke him" to his face on things which he judges himself favorably. He wrote "to chasten him and rebuke him" corresponding to two aspects. One, so that he suffers from this, for the disgrace from other human beings is also considered sufferings (which atone). The second aspect "to rebuke him", i.e. to clarify to him through human beings that what it is reprehensible, and that perhaps he was mistaken until now and thought there was nothing wrong with it.

**או לנסיון ומבחן**שהנסיון בממון הוא לפעמים בסבל הפסד גדול לשם הבורא ולפעמים במניעת ריוח גדול לז"א ב' לשונות נסיון ומבחן ואפשר כוון לשתי כוונות בנסיון אם להראות מדרגתו לעיני הבריות כמו שאמרו במד"ר על נסיון אברהם ואם להורות לו שיכיר בעצמו מדרגתו בכדי שידע שהוא צריך להוסיף אומץ וכמו שאמרו בדוד:

A "trial" in financial matters consists either of bearing a large monetary loss for the Creator, or it takes the form of abstaining from a large profit. For this, the author used a double expression.

**או לנקמה ומכשול**גם בזה יש ב' בחינות אם שנעשה בו נקמה על פשעו ע"י עשרו כמ"ש במי שנתחייב הריגה שהוא נמסר למלכות או אנס הורגו והוא מתעשר בכדי שיהרגוהו לקחת ממונו ולפעמים שהאדם נכשל ע"י ממונו בנפשו כמו קרח שנתגאה בעשרו וחטא:

Also in this, there are two aspects. One, the wealth becomes a means of exacting retribution from him for his sin, as the sages said regarding one who incurred a [divine] decree of death (Midrash Koheles Raba 5:18) - that he becomes arrested by the government or a bandit murders him, and G-d sends him wealth so that he will be murdered to take his money. Two, sometimes a man mortally stumbles because of his wealth such as Korach who become proud of his wealth and sinned.
