**כי משער המצטרף כו'**מלה זאת נזכרת בדקדוק ובהגיון שאב ובן וכן אדון ועבד הם שמות מצטרפות כלו' שכל אחד מהם יצורף לשני ולא יתכן להמצא בלתו כי לא יקרא בשם אב אם אין לו בן או בן אם אין לו אב וכן אדון ועבד. וידוע בין המחברים שמקבוץ דברים אחדים שהם מסוג אחד יקרא אצלם שער כמו בספר הזה שקרא שם לכל קבוץ מפרטים שער ולז"א שדבר זה הוא משער המצטרף כלומר מכלל הדברים המצטרפים ומפרש בעצמו ענין הצירוף דהיינו אשר תתחייב מציאת כו' כמו שפירשתי:

**הגדולה מעטה הבורא כו'**מעטה המ"ם בפת"ח והטי"ת בסגו"ל והוא לשון לבוש כמו והוא עוטה מעיל ובפיוט מעטהו קנאה ומי שיכנס אל המלך עוטה ומלובש במעטה המלך בודאי יהדפנו המלך בחמת רוחו ומביא ראיה שהגדולה היא מעטה הבורא שנאמר ה' מלך גאות לבש:

**ואין מדה טובה כו'**שלא יתכן ליחס שום מדה טיבה לבר ישראל המאמין קודם שיפרע חובתו כלומר שלא יצדק ליחס לו שום יתרון מן היתרונות קודם שיצא ידי חובתו בעבודה המחוייבת:

One cannot truly ascribe any [extra] piety to a believing Jew before he first discharges his basic duty, i.e. it is incorrect to ascribe to him any extra measure [of piety] whatsoever before he first discharges his obligation in the obligatory duty.

**אלא באומן כניעתו כו'**כלו' בהרגילו עצמו בכניעה ושפלות כו' ואחר שאין שום יתרון מדה טובה לאדם קודם פריעת חובתו והחובה תלויה בציור העבדות והעבדות תלויה בכניעה הרי לך שהכניעה היא קודמת לכל המדות וכולם סמוכות ונגררות אחריה ואמר כניעתו ושפלותו שחותו וכניעתו, כניעתו מפני רוממותו ית' ושפלותו מפני טובותיו ושניהם בלב ושחותו בפועל:

i.e. by habituating himself in submission and lowliness, etc. And since there is no extra piety before discharging his primary duty, and the discharging of the primary duty depends on picturing slavehood on himself (that he pictures that he is a servant of G-d), and slavehood depends on submission, if so, behold, submission precedes all good qualities, and all of them are secondary and stem from it. He specified three terms "submit himself", "humble himself", and "lower himself". "Submit himself" due to G-d's greatness, "humble himself" due to G-d's benefits, both are in the heart, while "lower himself" is in action.

**נכנעו לא אשחיתם**אחר שנכנעו לא אשחיתם כי הכניעה היא התחלה לתשובה וההתחלה חצי הכל ובודאי יגמרו תשובתם:

since they have submitted themselves, I will not destroy them because submission is the beginning of repentance, and the beginning is half of the whole, and certainly they will complete their repentance.
