**שרשה מוסד על כו'**ואחר שכל מגמתו על תשוקת השכר וטובת עצמו ובהפך לברוח מן העונש א"כ בהזדמן לו איזה תקוה טובה בעוה"ז כמו שכר בני אדם או שבחם אותו או קבלת הכבוד מהם יפנה לבבו לזה כי מה לו שכר עוה"ב או עוה"ז לא כן הערת השכל שאין מגמתה לשום תקוה לטובת עצמו כלל ופרט שלשה דברים חנופה ושבח בני אדם וכבודם נגד מחשבה ודבור ומעשה שבמלת חנופה כוון על מי שכוונתו להתגדל ולהתחשב בלבות בני אדם ושבח הוא בדבור שיהיו בני אדם מדברים זה עם זה ומספרים שבחו וכבוד הוא בפועל המעשה שיחלקו לו כבוד בפועל והשלשה דברים האלה גורמים זה לזה:

Since all of his drive is due to desire for reward and personal benefit or the opposite, namely, to flee from punishment. If so, when the opportunity comes for some potential good in this world such as reward from people or praise from them, his heart will turn to this, since who cares whether it is reward in this world or in the next? This is unlike the inducement from the understanding, however, whose aim is not for any hope of personal gain whatsoever.
