## Proverbs Chapter 19

###### Proverbs 19:1

טֽוֹב־רָ֭שׁ הוֹלֵ֣ךְ בְּתֻמּ֑וֹ מֵעִקֵּ֥שׁ שְׂ֝פָתָ֗יו וְה֣וּא כְסִֽיל׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Better is the poor man who walks in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

Better a poor man who walks in his innocence than one who perverts his lips and is a fool.

Also, that the soul be without knowledge is not good; and he that hastens with his feet sins.

The foolishness of a man perverts his way: and his heart frets against the Lord.

Wealth makes many friends; but as for the poor, his neighbour keeps himself apart.

Wealth adds many friends, but a poor man is parted from his fellow [by his poverty].

A false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that utters lies shall not escape.

Many will entreat the favour of the generous man: and every man is a friend to him that gives gifts.

כׇּ֥ל־אֲחֵי־רָ֨שׁ**׀** שְֽׂנֵאֻ֗הוּ אַ֤ף כִּ֣י מְ֭רֵעֵהוּ רָחֲק֣וּ מִמֶּ֑נּוּ מְרַדֵּ֖ף אֲמָרִ֣ים (לא) [לוֹ־]הֵֽמָּה׃

All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? Their word for him is, Pursuer.

All the kin of the poor man hate him — How much more so do his friends withdraw from him! He pursues words which are naught [i.e., vain, saying: "So and so is my relative; so and so is my friend."]

He that gets wisdom loves his own soul: he that keeps understanding shall find good.

The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

The king’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion; and his favour is like dew upon the grass.

As the roar of a young lion is the wrath of the King, and as dew upon grass is His [good] will.


###### Proverbs 19:13

A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual drip.

House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: but a prudent wife is from the Lord.

Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep; and the idle soul shall suffer hunger.

Laziness casts a slumber, and the deceiving soul will go hungry.


###### Proverbs 19:16

שֹׁמֵ֣ר מִ֭צְוָה שֹׁמֵ֣ר נַפְשׁ֑וֹ בּוֹזֵ֖ה דְרָכָ֣יו (יומת) [יָמֽוּת]׃

He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul; but he that despises his ways shall die.

One who keeps a mitzvah keeps his soul. One who is heedless of his ways [(not taking care to weigh them)] will die.


###### Proverbs 19:17

מַלְוֵ֣ה יְ֭הֹוָה ח֣וֹנֵֽן דָּ֑ל וּ֝גְמֻל֗וֹ יְשַׁלֶּם־לֽוֹ׃

He that gives graciously to the poor makes a loan to the Lord; and that which he has given he will pay him back.

He who is gracious to the poor has lent to the L-rd, and He will pay him his reward.


###### Proverbs 19:18

יַסֵּ֣ר בִּ֭נְךָ כִּֽי־יֵ֣שׁ תִּקְוָ֑ה וְאֶל־הֲ֝מִית֗וֹ אַל־תִּשָּׂ֥א נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃

Chastise thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

Chastise your son, for there is hope, but do not turn your soul to killing him.


###### Proverbs 19:19

A man of great anger shall suffer the penalty; for if thou interpose, that shall only add to it.

###### Proverbs 19:22

The attraction of a man is his kindness: but a poor man is better than a liar.

###### Proverbs 19:23

The fear of the Lord tends to life: and he that has it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

###### Proverbs 19:24

A lazy man hides his hand in the dish, and will not so much as bring it back to his mouth.

###### Proverbs 19:25

לֵ֣ץ תַּ֭כֶּה וּפֶ֣תִי יַעְרִ֑ם וְהוֹכִ֥יחַ לְ֝נָב֗וֹן יָבִ֥ין דָּֽעַת׃

Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: but rebuke one that has understanding, and he will gain knowledge.

You smite the scoffer and the understanding one grows wise [(Through the plagues against Pharaoh and the war with Amalek Yithro grew wise and became a proselyte)]. Chastise the understanding one and he will understand [(even more)] knowledge.

מְֽשַׁדֶּד־אָ֭ב יַבְרִ֣יחַ אֵ֑ם בֵּ֝֗ן מֵבִ֥ישׁ וּמַחְפִּֽיר׃

A son of scandalous and shameful ways shall ruin his father, and drive his mother away.

Cease, my son, to hear the instruction only to stray from the words of knowledge.

An ungodly witness scorns justice: and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.

###### Proverbs 19:29

Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.
