## Proverbs Chapter 29

###### Proverbs 29:1

אִ֣ישׁ תּ֭וֹכָחוֹת מַקְשֶׁה־עֹ֑רֶף פֶּ֥תַע יִ֝שָּׁבֵ֗ר וְאֵ֣ין מַרְפֵּֽא׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
He, that being often reproved hardens his neck, shall suddenly be broken, beyond healing.

The man [(who is in need)] of rebuke, and stiffens his neck [(not to hear it)] will be suddenly broken with none to heal [him].

בִּרְב֣וֹת צַ֭דִּיקִים יִשְׂמַ֣ח הָעָ֑ם וּבִמְשֹׁ֥ל רָ֝שָׁ֗ע יֵאָ֥נַֽח עָֽם׃

When the righteous are on the increase, the people rejoice: but when the wicked man bears rule, the people mourn.

In the increase of the righteous, the people will rejoice, but in the rule of the wicked, the people will sigh.

He who loves wisdom gladdens his father: but he who keeps company with harlots wastes his substance.

The king by justice establishes the land: but he who exacts gifts overthrows it.

The king establishes the land through justice, but a man [i.e., a judge] of vanity [(who is precipitate in judgment)] destroys it.

גֶּ֭בֶר מַחֲלִ֣יק עַל־רֵעֵ֑הוּ רֶ֝֗שֶׁת פּוֹרֵ֥שׂ עַל־פְּעָמָֽיו׃

A man who flatters his neighbour spreads a net for his feet.

The man who "smooth-talks" his friend spreads the net for his [own] feet.

In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous man sings and rejoices.

The righteous man apprehends the cause of the poor: but the wicked man cannot grasp that knowledge.

Scornful men stir up a city into strife: but wise men turn away wrath.

If a wise man contends with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.

The bloodthirsty hate the innocent: but the just seek his good.

A fool vents all his anger: but a wise man keeping it in subdues it.

If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.

The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the Lord gives light to the eyes of both.

A poor man [i.e., one who is "poor" in Torah] and a man of depth [in Torah] have met [i.e., they are on a par]. The L-rd enlightens the eyes of both.


###### Proverbs 29:14

The king who faithfully judges the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.

###### Proverbs 29:15

The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.

The rod and rebuke give wisdom, but the youth who is given free rein shames his mother [viz., Yishmael, who ultimately caused his mother, Hagar, to be cast out.]


###### Proverbs 29:16

When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases: both the righteous shall witness their fall.

###### Proverbs 29:17

Correct thy son, and he will give thee rest; and he will give delight to thy soul.

###### Proverbs 29:18

Where there is no vision, the people become unruly: but happy is he who keeps Tora.

When there is no prophecy [i.e., when prophecy is removed from Israel because of their shaming the prophets], the people are breached [i.e., they become corrupt], and fortunate is the keeper of Torah.

A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understands he will not answer.

With words [alone] the servant [i.e., one who rebels against the judges] will not be chastised, for he will perceive that there is no response [i.e., that his reprover remains silent after reproving him (so that words must be "reinforced" by blows)].

A man’s pride shall bring him low: but the humble in spirit shall attain honour.

Whoever is partner with a thief is his own enemy: he hears the adjuration of witnesses, but discloses nothing.

The fear of man brings a snare: but he who puts his trust in the Lord shall be protected.

Many seek the ruler’s favour; but a man’s judgment comes from the Lord.

An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.
