###### Psalms 40:1

###### Psalms 40:2

קַוֺּ֣ה קִוִּ֣יתִי יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֥ט אֵ֝לַ֗י וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע שַׁוְעָתִֽי׃

I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined to me, and heard my cry.

I [(Israel)] hoped in the L rd [(in Egypt)], and He inclined [his ear] to me and heard my outcry.


###### Psalms 40:3

וַיַּעֲלֵ֤נִי**׀** מִבּ֥וֹר שָׁאוֹן֮ מִטִּ֢יט הַיָּ֫וֵ֥ן וַיָּ֖קֶם עַל־סֶ֥לַע רַגְלַ֗י כּוֹנֵ֥ן אֲשֻׁרָֽי׃

He brought me up also out of the gruesome pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my footsteps.

And He lifted me from the pit [(of servitude, and from)] the roaring [of the Red Sea], from the thick mire [of the sea-bed]. And He set my feet on a rock; He established my steps.


###### Psalms 40:4

וַיִּתֵּ֬ן בְּפִ֨י**׀** שִׁ֥יר חָדָשׁ֮ תְּהִלָּ֢ה לֵאלֹ֫הֵ֥ינוּ יִרְא֣וּ רַבִּ֣ים וְיִירָ֑אוּ וְ֝יִבְטְח֗וּ בַּיהֹוָֽה׃

And he has put a new song in my mouth, a praise to our God. Many shall see, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

And He put in my mouth a new song, praise to our G d. Many will see and fear, and they will trust in the L rd.


###### Psalms 40:5

אַ֥שְֽׁרֵי־הַגֶּ֗בֶר אֲשֶׁר־שָׂ֣ם יְ֭הֹוָה מִבְטַח֑וֹ וְֽלֹא־פָנָ֥ה אֶל־רְ֝הָבִ֗ים וְשָׂטֵ֥י כָזָֽב׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Blessed is that man that makes the Lord his trust, and looks not to the proud, nor to such as turn aside to lies.

Happy is the man who made the L rd his trust and did not turn to the haughty or to the followers of falsehood [(idolatry)].


###### Psalms 40:6

רַבּ֤וֹת עָשִׂ֨יתָ**׀** אַתָּ֤ה**׀** יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהַי֮ נִ֥פְלְאֹתֶ֥יךָ וּמַחְשְׁבֹתֶ֗יךָ אֵ֫לֵ֥ינוּ אֵ֤ין**׀** עֲרֹ֬ךְ אֵלֶ֗יךָ אַגִּ֥ידָה וַאֲדַבֵּ֑רָה עָ֝צְמ֗וּ מִסַּפֵּֽר׃

Many, O Lord my God, are Thy wonderful works which Thou hast done, and Thy thoughts which are towards us: none can compare with Thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

Much have You done, You, O L rd our G d. Your wonders and Your thoughts have been on our behalf. [(For us, You created the world; for us You split the sea, etc.)]. There is none to liken to You. [If I thought] to relate and speak [Your wonders, I could not, for] they are too many to tell.


###### Psalms 40:7

זֶ֤בַח וּמִנְחָ֨ה**׀** לֹֽא־חָפַ֗צְתָּ אׇ֭זְנַיִם כָּרִ֣יתָ לִּ֑י עוֹלָ֥ה וַ֝חֲטָאָ֗ה לֹ֣א שָׁאָֽלְתָּ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Thou dost not desire sacrifice or meal offering; Thou hast dug open my ears; burnt offering and sin offering hast Thou not required.

Sacrifice and meal-offering You did not desire [(at the giving of the Torah)]. You "hollowed out" ears for me [(to listen to Your voice)]; You did not ask for burnt-offering or sin-offering.


###### Psalms 40:8

אָ֣ז אָ֭מַרְתִּי הִנֵּה־בָ֑אתִי בִּמְגִלַּת־סֵ֝֗פֶר כָּת֥וּב עָלָֽי׃

Then said I, Lo, I come with the scroll of the book which is written for me;

Then [(at the giving of the Torah)], I said [before You]: Behold, I have come [(to be bound in Your covenant)]. In the scroll of the Book [the Torah], it is [so] written of me [viz. Exodus 24:27].


###### Psalms 40:9

לַ֥עֲשׂוֹת־רְצוֹנְךָ֣ אֱלֹהַ֣י חָפָ֑צְתִּי וְ֝ת֥וֹרָתְךָ֗ בְּת֣וֹךְ מֵעָֽי׃

I delight to do Thy will, O my God: and Thy Tora is within my heart.

To do Your will, my G d, did I desire. And Your Torah is [even] in the midst of my reins [i.e., I have not eaten unclean beasts or untithed produce.]

בִּשַּׂ֤רְתִּי צֶ֨דֶק**׀** בְּקָ֘הָ֤ל רָ֗ב הִנֵּ֣ה שְׂ֭פָתַי לֹ֣א אֶכְלָ֑א יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה אַתָּ֥ה יָדָֽעְתָּ׃

I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I did not refrain my lips, O Lord, Thou knowst.

I brought tidings of righteousness [(The Song at the Sea, The Song of the Well, The Song of Devorah)] in a great throng; I did not spare my lips. O L rd, You know it.


###### Psalms 40:11

צִדְקָתְךָ֬ לֹֽא־כִסִּ֨יתִי**׀** בְּת֬וֹךְ לִבִּ֗י אֱמוּנָתְךָ֣ וּתְשׁוּעָתְךָ֣ אָמָ֑רְתִּי לֹא־כִחַ֥דְתִּי חַסְדְּךָ֥ וַ֝אֲמִתְּךָ֗ לְקָהָ֥ל רָֽב׃

I have not hid Thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared Thy faithfulness and Thy salvation: I have not concealed Thy love and Thy truth from the great congregation.

I did not conceal Your righteousness in my heart. I spoke Your faith and Your help. I did not hold back [from relating] Your lovingkindness and Your truth to a great throng.


###### Psalms 40:12

אַתָּ֤ה יְהֹוָ֗ה לֹֽא־תִכְלָ֣א רַחֲמֶ֣יךָ מִמֶּ֑נִּי חַסְדְּךָ֥ וַ֝אֲמִתְּךָ֗ תָּמִ֥יד יִצְּרֽוּנִי׃

Withhold not Thou Thy tender mercies from me, O Lord: let Thy steadfast love and Thy truth continually preserve me.

You, [likewise,] O L rd, do not hold back Your mercies from me. Let Your lovingkindness and Your truth always guard me.


###### Psalms 40:13

כִּ֤י אָפְפֽוּ־עָלַ֨י**׀** רָע֡וֹת עַד־אֵ֬ין מִסְפָּ֗ר הִשִּׂיג֣וּנִי עֲ֭וֺנֹתַי וְלֹא־יָכֹ֣לְתִּי לִרְא֑וֹת עָצְמ֥וּ מִשַּׂעֲר֥וֹת רֹ֝אשִׁ֗י וְלִבִּ֥י עֲזָבָֽנִי׃

For innumerable evils have compassed me about: my iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of my head: therefore my heart fails me.

For countless ills have encompassed me. My sins overtook me and I could not see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart has forsaken me.


###### Psalms 40:14

רְצֵ֣ה יְ֭הֹוָה לְהַצִּילֵ֑נִי יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה לְעֶזְרָ֥תִי חֽוּשָׁה׃

Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord, make haste to help me.

###### Psalms 40:15

יֵ֘בֹ֤שׁוּ וְיַחְפְּר֨וּ**׀** יַחַד֮ מְבַקְשֵׁ֥י נַפְשִׁ֗י לִסְפּ֫וֹתָ֥הּ יִסֹּ֣גוּ אָ֭חוֹר וְיִכָּלְמ֑וּ חֲ֝פֵצֵ֗י רָעָתִֽי׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Let them be ashamed and confounded together who seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be turned backward and put to shame who wish me evil.

Let them be shamed and confounded together, those who seek to consume my soul. Let them recoil in shame, those who desire my evil.


###### Psalms 40:16

יָ֭שֹׁמּוּ עַל־עֵ֣קֶב בׇּשְׁתָּ֑ם הָאֹמְרִ֥ים לִ֝֗י הֶ֘אָ֥ח׀הֶאָֽח׃

Let them be appalled because of their shame who say concerning me, Aha, aha.

Let them be confounded when their shame follows, [measure for measure], those who exult over me: "He'ach!" "He'ach!"


###### Psalms 40:17

יָ֘שִׂ֤ישׂוּ וְיִשְׂמְח֨וּ**׀** בְּךָ֗ כׇּֽל־מְבַ֫קְשֶׁ֥יךָ יֹאמְר֣וּ תָ֭מִיד יִגְדַּ֣ל יְהֹוָ֑ה אֹ֝הֲבֵ֗י תְּשׁוּעָתֶֽךָ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Let all those who seek Thee rejoice and be glad in Thee: let such as love Thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified.

Let them rejoice and regale in You, all who seek You. Let them always say: "The L rd be exalted!", those who love Your salvation.


###### Psalms 40:18

וַאֲנִ֤י**׀** עָנִ֣י וְאֶבְיוֹן֮ אֲדֹנָ֢י יַחֲשׇׁ֫ב־לִ֥י עֶזְרָתִ֣י וּמְפַלְטִ֣י אַ֑תָּה אֱ֝לֹהַ֗י אַל־תְּאַחַֽר׃{פ}

But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord takes thought for me: Thou art my help and my deliverer; delay not, O my God!

And I [(Israel)], as poor and needy may the L rd regard me. You are my help and my saviour. My G d, do not delay.
