## Psalms Chapter 53

###### Psalms 53:1

לַמְנַצֵּ֥חַ עַֽל־מָחֲלַ֗ת מַשְׂכִּ֥יל לְדָוִֽד׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
To the chief Musician on Maĥalat, A Maskil of David.

For the conductor, to [be played on] the machalath, a maskil of David.


###### Psalms 53:2

אָ֘מַ֤ר נָבָ֣ל בְּ֭לִבּוֹ אֵ֣ין אֱלֹהִ֑ים הִֽ֝שְׁחִ֗יתוּ וְהִֽתְעִ֥יבוּ עָ֝֗וֶל אֵ֣ין עֹֽשֵׂה־טֽוֹב׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They have acted corruptly, and they have done abominable iniquity: there is none that does good.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
[(On the destruction of the second Temple [Compare with Psalm 14, on the destruction of the first Temple.])] The profligate [(Titus, in destroying the Temple)], says in his heart: "There is no G d." They have destroyed. They have wrought abomination. There is none [among them] that does good.


###### Psalms 53:3

אֱֽלֹהִ֗ים מִשָּׁמַיִם֮ הִשְׁקִ֢יף עַֽל־בְּנֵי־אָ֫דָ֥ם לִ֭רְאוֹת הֲיֵ֣שׁ מַשְׂכִּ֑יל דֹּ֝רֵ֗שׁ אֶת־אֱלֹהִֽים׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any man of discernment, that did seek God.

G d looks from the heavens upon the sons of men to see if there is a knowing one [(who would protest)], who would inquire after G d.


###### Psalms 53:4

כֻּלּ֥וֹ סָג֮ יַחְדָּ֢ו נֶ֫אֱלָ֥חוּ אֵ֤ין עֹֽשֵׂה־ט֑וֹב אֵ֝֗ין גַּם־אֶחָֽד׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Is every one of them dross? are they altogether filthy? is there no one who does good? No, not even one.

All [(of the men in Titus's host)] are "dross," as one [(none protesting)]; they are [all] corrupt; none does good — not even one.

הֲלֹ֥א יָדְעוּ֮ פֹּ֤עֲלֵ֫י אָ֥וֶן אֹכְלֵ֣י עַ֭מִּי אָ֣כְלוּ לֶ֑חֶם אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים לֹ֣א קָרָֽאוּ׃

Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread: and do not call upon God?

Did they not know, the workers of iniquity, the eaters of My people as the eaters of bread, not calling upon G d — [did they not know that]


###### Psalms 53:6

שָׁ֤ם**׀** פָּ֥חֲדוּ פַחַד֮ לֹא־הָ֢יָ֫ה פָ֥חַד כִּֽי־אֱלֹהִ֗ים פִּ֭זַּר עַצְמ֣וֹת חֹנָ֑ךְ הֱ֝בִשֹׁ֗תָה כִּֽי־אֱלֹהִ֥ים מְאָסָֽם׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God has scattered the bones of him that encamps against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God has rejected them.

they would be seized with fear [(in that place in the end of days)]? [This] fear was not [like the first, that of Belshazzar (see Psalm 14)], for [(in this redemption)] G d scattered the bones of those camping against you, [Jerusalem (viz. Zechariah 14:12)]. You shamed [all of my foes], for G d rejected them.


###### Psalms 53:7

מִ֥י־יִתֵּ֣ן מִצִּיּוֹן֮ יְשֻׁע֢וֹת יִשְׂרָ֫אֵ֥ל בְּשׁ֣וּב אֱ֭לֹהִים שְׁב֣וּת עַמּ֑וֹ יָגֵ֥ל יַ֝עֲקֹ֗ב יִשְׂמַ֥ח יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃{פ}

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Oh that the salvation of Yisra᾽el were come out of Żiyyon! When God brings back the captivity of his people, Ya῾aqov shall rejoice, and Yisra᾽el shall be glad.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
Would that [the day drew near of] His sending from Zion the salvations of Israel, when G d will return the captivity of His people. [Then] Jacob will regale; Israel will rejoice.
