## Psalms Chapter 81

###### Psalms 81:1

לַמְנַצֵּ֬חַ׀עַֽל־הַגִּתִּ֬ית לְאָסָֽף׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
To the chief Musician upon the Gittit, Of Asaf.

For the conductor, on the gitith [a type of instrument], [a psalm] of Asaf.


###### Psalms 81:2

הַ֭רְנִינוּ לֵאלֹהִ֣ים עוּזֵּ֑נוּ הָ֝רִ֗יעוּ לֵאלֹהֵ֥י יַעֲקֹֽב׃

Sing aloud to God our strength: make a joyful noise to the God of Ya῾aqov.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
Sing to the G d of our strength; blow [the shofar on Rosh Hashanah] to the G d of Jacob.


###### Psalms 81:3

שְֽׂאוּ־זִ֭מְרָה וּתְנוּ־תֹ֑ף כִּנּ֖וֹר נָעִ֣ים עִם־נָֽבֶל׃

Raise a song, sound the timbrel, the sweet lyre, with the harp.

Lift [your voices in] song, and sound the timbrel, the sweet lyre and the harp.


###### Psalms 81:4

תִּקְע֣וּ בַחֹ֣דֶשׁ שׁוֹפָ֑ר בַּ֝כֵּ֗סֶה לְי֣וֹם חַגֵּֽנוּ׃

Blow a shofar at the new moon, at the full moon on our feast day.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
Blow the shofar in the renewal [of the moon], at the appointed time for the day of our festival [Rosh Hashanah].


###### Psalms 81:5

כִּ֤י חֹ֣ק לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל ה֑וּא מִ֝שְׁפָּ֗ט לֵאלֹהֵ֥י יַעֲקֹֽב׃

For this is a statute for Yisra᾽el, an ordinance of the God of Ya῾aqov.

For it [the blowing of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah] is a statute unto Israel, [a day of] judgment for the G d of Jacob.


###### Psalms 81:6

עֵד֤וּת**׀** בִּיה֘וֹסֵ֤ף שָׂמ֗וֹ בְּ֭צֵאתוֹ עַל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם שְׂפַ֖ת לֹא־יָדַ֣עְתִּי אֶשְׁמָֽע׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
This he ordained in Yosef for testimony, when he went out over the land of Miżrayim. I heard the language of him whom I had not known, saying,

Testimony [(to Rosh Hashanah)] in Yehosef He placed, when he went forth [from prison to rule] over the land of Egypt [(Joseph being released from prison on Rosh Hashanah)]. [Joseph says:] A language I did not know I will [now] understand [(the angel Gabriel teaching him seventy tongues)].


###### Psalms 81:7

הֲסִיר֣וֹתִי מִסֵּ֣בֶל שִׁכְמ֑וֹ כַּ֝פָּ֗יו מִדּ֥וּד תַּעֲבֹֽרְנָה׃

I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands are freed from the basket.

[G d says:] I removed his shoulder from toil; his hands are freed from the [(Egyptian slave labor of the)] cauldron [i.e., cooking].


###### Psalms 81:8

בַּצָּרָ֥ה קָרָ֗אתָ וָאֲחַ֫לְּצֶ֥ךָּ אֶ֭עֶנְךָ בְּסֵ֣תֶר רַ֑עַם אֶבְחׇנְךָ֨ עַל־מֵ֖י מְרִיבָ֣ה סֶֽלָה׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
Thou didst call in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meriva. (Sela.)

In affliction you [Israel] called, and I rescued you. I answered you [though you called] secretly, in thunder, [(openly manifesting My might)], [though] it was clear to Me [(that you would rebel against Me] at the waters of Merivah, Selah.


###### Psalms 81:9

שְׁמַ֣ע עַ֭מִּי וְאָעִ֣ידָה בָּ֑ךְ יִ֝שְׂרָאֵ֗ל אִם־תִּֽשְׁמַֽע־לִֽי׃

Hear, O my people, and I will testify against thee: O Yisra᾽el, if thou wilt hearken to me:

[(Having done all this for you, it is fitting that you)] hearken unto Me, My people, and I shall exhort you. [(You are my people)] Israel, if you hearken unto Me.


###### Psalms 81:10

לֹא־יִהְיֶ֣ה בְ֭ךָ אֵ֣ל זָ֑ר וְלֹ֥א תִ֝שְׁתַּחֲוֶ֗ה לְאֵ֣ל נֵכָֽר׃

there shall be no strange god among thee; nor shalt thou worship any foreign deity.

Let there by no strange god unto you, and do not bow down to a foreign god.


###### Psalms 81:11

אָֽנֹכִ֨י**׀** יְ֘הֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ הַֽ֭מַּעַלְךָ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם הַרְחֶב־פִּ֝֗יךָ וַאֲמַלְאֵֽהוּ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
I am the Lord thy God who brought thee out of the land of Miżrayim: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

I am the L rd your G d who brought you up from the land of Egypt; open wide your mouth [i.e., ask whatever you like], and I shall fill it.


###### Psalms 81:12

וְלֹא־שָׁמַ֣ע עַמִּ֣י לְקוֹלִ֑י וְ֝יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל לֹא־אָ֥בָה לִֽי׃

But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Yisra᾽el would none of me.

But My people did not hearken to My voice; Israel did not wish [to heed] Me.


###### Psalms 81:13

וָ֭אֲשַׁלְּחֵהוּ בִּשְׁרִיר֣וּת לִבָּ֑ם יֵ֝לְכ֗וּ בְּֽמוֹעֲצ֖וֹתֵיהֶֽם׃

So I let them go after the stubbornness of their hearts, that they might follow their own counsels.

And I sent them after the visions of their hearts; let them follow their counsels!


###### Psalms 81:14

ל֗וּ עַ֭מִּי שֹׁמֵ֣עַֽ לִ֑י יִ֝שְׂרָאֵ֗ל בִּדְרָכַ֥י יְהַלֵּֽכוּ׃

Oh that my people would hearken to me, and Yisra᾽el would walk in my ways!

Would [(even now)] that My people would listen to Me, that Israel would walk in My ways!


###### Psalms 81:15

כִּ֭מְעַט אוֹיְבֵיהֶ֣ם אַכְנִ֑יעַ וְעַ֥ל צָ֝רֵיהֶ֗ם אָשִׁ֥יב יָדִֽי׃

I would soon subdue their enemies, and turn my hand against their adversaries.

In but a short while I would have humbled their foes and turned My hand [i.e., My blows, from them] upon their oppressors.


###### Psalms 81:16

מְשַׂנְאֵ֣י יְ֭הֹוָה יְכַחֲשׁוּ־ל֑וֹ וִיהִ֖י עִתָּ֣ם לְעוֹלָֽם׃

Let the haters of the Lord cringe before him: and their punishment should last forever.

[And then] the foes of the L rd would deny [(their atrocities)] to Him [(in terror of retribution)] and their time [(of retribution)] would endure forever.


###### Psalms 81:17

וַֽ֭יַּאֲכִילֵהוּ מֵחֵ֣לֶב חִטָּ֑ה וּ֝מִצּ֗וּר דְּבַ֣שׁ אַשְׂבִּיעֶֽךָ׃{פ}

But he would feed him with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock I will satisfy thee.

And He would feed them [Israel] from the fat of the wheat, and [say to them:] "From the rock I will sate you with honey."
