## Psalms Chapter 82

###### Psalms 82:1

מִזְמ֗וֹר לְאָ֫סָ֥ף אֱֽלֹהִ֗ים נִצָּ֥ב בַּעֲדַת־אֵ֑ל בְּקֶ֖רֶב אֱלֹהִ֣ים יִשְׁפֹּֽט׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
A Psalm of Asaf. God stands in the congregation of God; he judges among the judges.

A psalm of Asaf. G d stands in the congregation of the Almighty. In the midst of the judges does He judge [(to see if they will judge in accordance with the truth)].


###### Psalms 82:2

עַד־מָתַ֥י תִּשְׁפְּטוּ־עָ֑וֶל וּפְנֵ֥י רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים תִּשְׂאוּ־סֶֽלָה׃

How long will you judge unjustly, and respect the persons of the wicked? (Sela.)

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
[And you, (you judges,)] until when will you judge wrongly, and the face of the wicked ever favor?

שִׁפְטוּ־דַ֥ל וְיָת֑וֹם עָנִ֖י וָרָ֣שׁ הַצְדִּֽיקוּ׃

Judge the cause of the poor and fatherless: vindicate the afflicted and needy.

**The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein:**
Judge the poor and the orphaned. Vindicate the pauper and the impoverished one [in his litigation with the wealthy one, if justice so dictates].


###### Psalms 82:4

פַּלְּטוּ־דַ֥ל וְאֶבְי֑וֹן מִיַּ֖ד רְשָׁעִ֣ים הַצִּֽילוּ׃

Deliver the poor and destitute: rescue them out of the hand of the wicked.

Rescue the poor and the destitute; save them from the hand of the wicked.

לֹ֤א יָדְע֨וּ**׀** וְלֹ֥א יָבִ֗ינוּ בַּחֲשֵׁכָ֥ה יִתְהַלָּ֑כוּ יִ֝מּ֗וֹטוּ כׇּל־מ֥וֹסְדֵי אָֽרֶץ׃

**The Koren Jerusalem Bible:**
They know not, nor do they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

They [(the judges who pervert justice)] would not know and would not understand [that because of this sin] they walk in darkness and all the earth's foundations totter.

אֲֽנִי־אָ֭מַרְתִּי אֱלֹהִ֣ים אַתֶּ֑ם וּבְנֵ֖י עֶלְי֣וֹן כֻּלְּכֶֽם׃

I had said, You are angels, all of you sons of the most High;

I said [(when I gave you the Torah that)] you are [all like] angels [i.e., immortal], that you are all heavenly creatures.


###### Psalms 82:7

אָ֭כֵן כְּאָדָ֣ם תְּמוּת֑וּן וּכְאַחַ֖ד הַשָּׂרִ֣ים תִּפֹּֽלוּ׃

Nevertheless, you shall die like a man, and fall as one man, O princes.

But, as Adam you will die [(having perverted your ways as he did)], and as one of the [first] princes will you fall.

קוּמָ֣ה אֱ֭לֹהִים שׇׁפְטָ֣ה הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּֽי־אַתָּ֥ה תִ֝נְחַ֗ל בְּכׇל־הַגּוֹיִֽם׃{פ}

Arise, O God, judge the earth: for Thou shalt possess all the nations.
