**עד המפשׂעה.** פי': הערוה. והוא מן "אפשׂעה בה" (יש' כז,ד); וכן כנה הערוה ברגלים גם כן: "ולא עשה רגליו" (ש"ב יט,כה). ובמקומו בשמואל: "עד שתותיהם" (ש"ב י,ד), והוא גם כן כנוי לערוה:

**Until the *mifsa‘ah*.** This means the nakedness. It is of [the root attested in] *efse‘ah bah* (=I will stomp on it; Isa 27:4). The text also invokes legs [themselves] as a euphemism for nakedness: “He had not cleaned up his legs” (2 Sam 19:25). In the parallel verse in Samuel [it says], “until their foundations (*shetotehem*)” (2 Sam 10:4), which is also a euphemism for nakedness.

**שבעת אלפים רכב וארבעים אלף איש רגלי.** ובספר שמואל: "שבע מאות רכב וארבעים אלף פרשים" (ש"ב י,יח)! מה שאמ' בספר שמואל "שבע מאות רכב" רוצ' לומ': שבע מאות רכב בחור, ולא מנה שאר הרכב, ובזה הספר מנה כל הרכב שהיו שבעת אלפים. ושם מנה הפרשים שהיו ארבעים אלף ולא מנה הרגלים, והנה מנה הרגלים ולא מנה הפרשים:

**Seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand footmen.** But in the book of Samuel [it says], “seven *hundred* charioteers and forty thousand *horsemen*” (2 Sam 10:18)! When it says in the book of Samuel “seven hundred charioteers,” it means to say seven hundred elite charioteers, and it does not count the rest of them. But in this book it counts all the charioteers, who totaled seven thousand. And there it provides a number for the horsemen—who totaled forty thousand—but not for the footmen, whereas here it does so for the footmen but not for the horsemen.
