ועם כל זאת אנחנו כורתים ברית אמת לקיים את דברי התורה ובאים באלה ובשבועה ללכת בתורת ה' ולשמור ולעשות מצותיו ומשפטיו וחקיו כמו שאמרה התורה תחת אשר לא עבדת. וכבר כתבנו זה הברית אשר אנחנו כורתים ועל החתום כל המנהיגים והם השרים והלוים והכהנים והנה זכרם בשמות:

**נשיהם בניהם ובנותיהם כל יודע מבין.** ר"ל אשר יהיו מהם בני דעת לשמוע וללמד את דברי התורה:

**ואשר לא נתן בנותינו וגו'.** הנה זכרו קצת פרטי המצות אשר נכשלו בהם כמו ההתחתן בגוים ועשות מקח וממכר בשבת אע"פ שאין אסורו אלא מדברי סופרים לפי שהוא מביא לעבור על אסור תורה כמו הכתיבה שהיא מלאכה:

**וכל שבר.** וכל קנין והשמטת קרקע והשמטת כספים כי בזה נכשלו בהיותם בא"י כמו שתמצא מבואר בדברי ירמיה. והנה נטישת השנה השביעית הוא שישמיטו ידיהם מקרקעותיהם בעליהם והוא שיהיו הפירות כמו הפקר כמו שבארנו בפרשת בהר סיני:

**לתת עלינו שלישית השקל בשנה.** ראוי שתדע שהשקל הזה היה יותר גדול מהשקל הנזכר בתורה ולזה הספיק להם שלישית השקל להיותו כמו מחצית השקל שצותה התורה וכבר נתבאר בפרשת כי תשא שזה הכסף היה נתן על עבודת אהל מועד לעשות ממנו כל קרבנות צבור וכל המלאכה הצריכה בבית המקדש ובעבור שלא תשבת העבודה בבית המקדש הפלנו גורלות על קרבן העצים. ר"ל שקצתם היו מביאים שם עצים בבית המקדש וקצתם בעת אחר בדרך שהיה הדבר מוגבל להביאם שם לעתים מזומנים ומוגבלים באופן שלא יחסרו שם עצים לצורך המערכות אשר על המזבח. וידמה שגם בזה שגגו בעתים הקודמים. וקשרו עצמם גם כן לתת מתנות כהונה ולויה בדרך שיהיו הכהנים והלוים לעבוד עבודת המקדש ולא יחסר להם לחם ושמלה כי גם בזה שגגו בימים הקדמונים. ולזה היו הכהנים והלוים עוזבים עבודת המקדש והנה זכרו בזה המקום ממתנות כהונה בכורים ובכורות אדם ובכורות בהמה טמאה וטהורה וחלה ותרומה ומעשר מן המעשר שיקחו הכהנים ממעשר הלוים ותקנו שיביאו לכהנים כל אלו המתנות בבית האלהים כדי שלא יעזבו הכהנים העבודה לחזר על הגרנות לקחת התרומות והמעשרות:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**To charge ourselves one-third of a shekel yearly:** It is fitting that you should know that this shekel was bigger than the shekel mentioned in the Torah. And that is why a third of a shekel sufficed for them, since it was [equivalent to] the half-shekel that the Torah commanded. And it has already been explained in Parashat Ki Tissa that this silver was given for the service of the tabernacle, to [use it for] all of the communal sacrifices and all of the work that was required in the Temple. And in order that the service in the Temple never cease, they cast lots for the wood offering. Meaning to say that some of them would bring wood to the Temple [at one time], and others at another time, in such a way that the matter was controlled, to bring it at set and controlled times. This was in such a way that wood would not be lacking for the requirements of the arrangement [of wood] on the altar, and it appears that they also erred with this in earlier times. And they also organized themselves to give the presents of the priesthood and the Levites in such a way that there would be priests and Levites to do the Temple service, and they should not be lacking bread or cloaks. For they also erred with this in earlier times, and that is why priests and Levites would leave the Temple service. And behold, they mentioned the gifts to the priests in this section: The first fruits, the firstborn of man and the firstborn of impure and pure animals, the dough tithe [*challah*], the priestly tithe, and the tithe from the tithe which the priests would take from the Levites. And they decreed that they should bring all of these presents to the priests in the House of God, in order that the priests not leave their service, to go around to the threshing floors to take the priestly tithes and [other] tithes.

**וכל מלאכת בית אלהינו.** הוא כל מה שיצטרך שם כמו שמן למאור וסולת למנחות ויין ושמן ופרה אדומה ושאר מה שיצטרך שם:

**בכורי אדמתנו.** הם בכורי חטה ושעורה:

**ובכורי כל פרי כל עץ.** כבר בארו רבותינו שזה אינו אלא בפירות המיוחסים לארץ ישראל כמו גפן ותאנה ורמון וזיתים ותמרים ואלו השבעה מינין שזכרנו הם המיוחסים לארץ ישראל כאמרו ארץ חטה ושעורה גפן ותאנה ורמון ארץ זית שמן ודבש:
