###### Ruth 3:1

וַתֹּ֥אמֶר לָ֖הּ נׇעֳמִ֣י חֲמוֹתָ֑הּ בִּתִּ֕י הֲלֹ֧א אֲבַקֶּשׁ־לָ֛ךְ מָנ֖וֹחַ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִֽיטַב־לָֽךְ׃

Naomi, her mother-in-law, said to her, “My daughter, I shall seek security for you, which will be good for you.

Then No῾omi her mother in law said to her, My daughter, shall I not seek a home for thee, that it may be well with thee?

וְעַתָּ֗ה הֲלֹ֥א בֹ֙עַז֙ מֹֽדַעְתָּ֔נוּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיִ֖ית אֶת־נַעֲרוֹתָ֑יו הִנֵּה־ה֗וּא זֹרֶ֛ה אֶת־גֹּ֥רֶן הַשְּׂעֹרִ֖ים הַלָּֽיְלָה׃

Now, Boaz, our kinsman, with whose maidens you have been, behold, he will be winnowing the barley on the threshing floor, tonight.

And now is not Bo῾az of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wert? Behold, he winnows barley tonight in the threshingfloor.

וְרָחַ֣צְתְּ**׀** וָסַ֗כְתְּ וְשַׂ֧מְתְּ (שמלתך) [שִׂמְלֹתַ֛יִךְ] עָלַ֖יִךְ (וירדתי) [וְיָרַ֣דְתְּ] הַגֹּ֑רֶן אַל־תִּוָּדְעִ֣י לָאִ֔ישׁ עַ֥ד כַּלֹּת֖וֹ לֶאֱכֹ֥ל וְלִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃

[And you shall] bathe and scent yourself, dress [yourself] in your finest garb, and go down to the threshing floor, but do not identify yourself to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.

Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thyself, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the threshingfloor: but do not make thyself known to the man, until he has finished eating and drinking.

Now wash yourself [(of the putrefaction of your idolatry), and anoint yourself [(with mitzvoth)], and place your [Sabbath] raiment upon you, and I [i.e., my merit] will go down to the threshing-floor [with you]. Do not reveal yourself to the man [(Boaz)] until he has finished eating and drinking.

וִיהִ֣י בְשׇׁכְב֗וֹ וְיָדַ֙עַתְּ֙ אֶת־הַמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִשְׁכַּב־שָׁ֔ם וּבָ֛את וְגִלִּ֥ית מַרְגְּלֹתָ֖יו (ושכבתי) [וְשָׁכָ֑בְתְּ] וְהוּא֙ יַגִּ֣יד לָ֔ךְ אֵ֖ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּעֲשִֽׂין׃

And when he lies down, take note of the place where he lies, and go in, uncover his feet, and lie down; He will tell you what you are to do.”

And it shall be, when he lies down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee
				down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.

She answered her, “All that you say to me, I will do.”

So she went down to the threshing-floor, and did exactly as her mother-in-law had bidden her.

When Boaz ate and drank and his heart was jubilant, he went to lie down at the far end of the grain heap; and she came in softly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.

And when Bo῾az had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid herself down.

And Boaz ate, and he drank, and his heart was goodly [(he studied Torah)], and he came to lie down at the end of the pile. And she came softly and uncovered his feet, and she lay down.

וַֽיְהִי֙ בַּחֲצִ֣י הַלַּ֔יְלָה וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד הָאִ֖ישׁ וַיִּלָּפֵ֑ת וְהִנֵּ֣ה אִשָּׁ֔ה שֹׁכֶ֖בֶת מַרְגְּלֹתָֽיו׃

And it was at midnight, that the man was startled and [he] turned about—and behold—there was a woman lying at his feet.

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר מִי־אָ֑תְּ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר אָֽנֹכִי֙ ר֣וּת אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ וּפָרַשְׂתָּ֤ כְנָפֶ֙ךָ֙ עַל־אֲמָ֣תְךָ֔ כִּ֥י גֹאֵ֖ל אָֽתָּה׃

And he said, “Who are you?” And she answered, “I am Rus, your handmaid; spread your mantle over your handmaid, for you are a near kinsman.”

And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Rut thy handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thy handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.

And he said: Who are you? And she said: I am Ruth, your maidservant. Spread your [garment-] corner over your maidservant [i.e., take me as your wife], for you are a redeemer [(to redeem our inheritance, that Na'ami and I must sell. Acquire it, and me along with it, so that the dead one's name will be perpetuated thereby. When I come to the field (of the inheritance), people will say: This was the wife of Machlon.)]

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר בְּרוּכָ֨ה אַ֤תְּ לַֽיהֹוָה֙ בִּתִּ֔י הֵיטַ֛בְתְּ חַסְדֵּ֥ךְ הָאַחֲר֖וֹן מִן־הָרִאשׁ֑וֹן לְבִלְתִּי־לֶ֗כֶת אַֽחֲרֵי֙ הַבַּ֣חוּרִ֔ים אִם־דַּ֖ל וְאִם־עָשִֽׁיר׃

He then said, “Blessed be you of Adonoy, my daughter, your latest act of kindness has excelled [your] earlier [kindness], since you did not go [seek] after the young[er] men, whether poor or rich.

And he said, Blessed be thou of the Lord, my daughter: for thou hast shown more loyalty in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou didst not follow the young men, whether poor or rich.

And he said: Blessed are you of the L-rd, my daughter. Your later lovingkindness surpasses your first [(with your mother-in-law)], not to go after the young men, whether rich or poor.

וְעַתָּ֗ה בִּתִּי֙ אַל־תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י כֹּ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־תֹּאמְרִ֖י אֶעֱשֶׂה־לָּ֑ךְ כִּ֤י יוֹדֵ֙עַ֙ כׇּל־שַׁ֣עַר עַמִּ֔י כִּ֛י אֵ֥שֶׁת חַ֖יִל אָֽתְּ׃

And now, my daughter, fear not; whatever you ask, I will do for you, for it is known to all [who sit] in the gate of my people, that you are a virtuous woman.

וְעַתָּה֙ כִּ֣י אׇמְנָ֔ם כִּ֥י (אם) גֹאֵ֖ל אָנֹ֑כִי וְגַ֛ם יֵ֥שׁ גֹּאֵ֖ל קָר֥וֹב מִמֶּֽנִּי׃

Now, though it is true that I am a near kinsman, yet there is a kinsman who is even closer than I.

לִ֣ינִי**׀** הַלַּ֗יְלָה וְהָיָ֤ה בַבֹּ֙קֶר֙ אִם־יִגְאָלֵ֥ךְ טוֹב֙ יִגְאָ֔ל וְאִם־לֹ֨א יַחְפֹּ֧ץ לְגׇאֳלֵ֛ךְ וּגְאַלְתִּ֥יךְ אָנֹ֖כִי חַי־יְהֹוָ֑ה שִׁכְבִ֖י עַד־הַבֹּֽקֶר׃

Stay the night; and in the morning—if he will redeem you—well and good, let him redeem you, but if he does not wish to redeem you, then I will redeem you, as Adonoy lives—lie here until the morning.”

Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform to thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the Lord lives: lie down until the morning.

Lie [(without a husband)] this night, and, it shall be in the morning, if he redeems you, good; and if he does not wish to redeem you, then I shall redeem you — I swear by the L-rd! Lie [here] until the morning.

וַתִּשְׁכַּ֤ב מַרְגְּלוֹתָו֙ עַד־הַבֹּ֔קֶר וַתָּ֕קׇם (בטרום) [בְּטֶ֛רֶם] יַכִּ֥יר אִ֖ישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵ֑הוּ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אַל־יִוָּדַ֔ע כִּי־בָ֥אָה הָאִשָּׁ֖ה הַגֹּֽרֶן׃

So she lay at his feet till the morning, and she arose before one could recognize another, for he said, “It must not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.”

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הָ֠בִ֠י הַמִּטְפַּ֧חַת אֲשֶׁר־עָלַ֛יִךְ וְאֶחֳזִי־בָ֖הּ וַתֹּ֣אחֶז בָּ֑הּ וַיָּ֤מׇד שֵׁשׁ־שְׂעֹרִים֙ וַיָּ֣שֶׁת עָלֶ֔יהָ וַיָּבֹ֖א הָעִֽיר׃

And he said, “Bring [me] the shawl you are wearing, and hold it out.” She held it, and he measured out six measures of barley, and he placed it upon her; he then went into the city.

And he said: Take the shawl that is upon you and hold it. And she held it; and he measured six barley-corns and placed (them) thereon [(intimating the son of six blessings [the Messianic king] that is destined to arise from her [viz. Isaiah 11:2])], and he came to the city.

She came to her mother-in-law, who said, “What happened with you, my daughter?” So she told her all that the man had done for her.

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר שֵׁשׁ־הַשְּׂעֹרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה נָ֣תַן לִ֑י כִּ֚י אָמַ֣ר [אֵלַ֔י] אַל־תָּב֥וֹאִי רֵיקָ֖ם אֶל־חֲמוֹתֵֽךְ׃

And she said, “He gave me these six measures of barley, for he said to me, ‘Do not go empty-handed to your mother-in-law.”

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ שְׁבִ֣י בִתִּ֔י עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֵּֽדְעִ֔ין אֵ֖יךְ יִפֹּ֣ל דָּבָ֑ר כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יִשְׁקֹט֙ הָאִ֔ישׁ כִּֽי־אִם־כִּלָּ֥ה הַדָּבָ֖ר הַיּֽוֹם׃

She then said, “Wait, my daughter, until you know what will come of the matter for the man will not rest until he settles this matter today.”

Then she said, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not rest quiet until he finishes the matter to day.

And she said: Sit, my daughter, until you know how the thing will fall; for the man will not rest until he finishes the thing today.
