**Medieval Jewish mysticism, translated by Sholom Alchanan Singer. Northbrook, Ill. Whitehall Co., 1971:**
It is meritorious to study the “forty categories of work minus one,” ¹ so that he not forget which occupation is prohibited, in the same way that it is customary to expound on the activities of the festivals prior to the festival. So with the approaching Sabbath in order to facilitate the needs of the Sabbath, after the Sabbath eve service they ordained and instituted the recital of *Bameh Madlikin*,² (Hertz), p. 390. in the synagogue, which says in essence, “I have fulfilled what is in the Mishna.” This is not recited on the festival that leads into the Sabbath, because it is written, “Have ye tithed, Have ye prepared the Erub,”³ ed. Danby, p. 793. The *Erub* (lit mixture, amalgamation or combination) is used to extend the movements of an individual on the Sabbath beyond the two thousand cubit limitation imposed upon him by law. The precise formulation and application of the *Erub* is the subject of the tractate Erubin. and one does not tithe on the festival.⁴
