**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The Twelfth Principle. On the elucidation of the meaning of the *hof‘al* stem:**

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 12:2
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 12:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/12:2)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The sixth stem is called the *hof‘al* stem, and it is a derivative of *hif‘il*; therefore it too has the prefixed *he* like it, and it is of two kinds:**

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 12:3
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 12:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/12:3)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**1. The first kind** is when the corresponding *qal* stem is intransitive, as in *qam*, from which comes *huqam*. Its meaning is the same as that of the *pu‘al* stem—namely, that it indicates an action performed upon it by another.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 12:4
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 12:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/12:4)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**2. The second kind** is when the corresponding *qal* stem is transitive; in that case this stem receives the action by means of an intermediary. For example, “*hokhrat minḥah va-neseḵ*” (Joel 2:14). Here there are three participants: the locust, the vine, and the offering. The locust is the one that cuts off; the vine is cut off; and as a result the offering is cut off. And all the remaining rules governing the *hof‘al* stem are the same as those governing its counterpart, the geminated *pu‘al*, as I have explained in its proper place.
