**העקר השני. בביאור ההבדלים אשר בין כל אחת ואחת מן שמנה החלוקות הנזכרות:**

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The Second Principle. On the elucidation of the differences between each and every one of the eight divisions mentioned:**

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:2
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:2)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**1. Know** that although I said that in every root category there are seven verb patterns, this applies only to the division of transitive verbs. But the class of intransitive verbs has only three active patterns, for the passive patterns are not needed for them, since they themselves are already passive, as I have already hinted in section 2. Only a few are found that appear in the *Nif‘al* and *Hitpa‘el* patterns, as will be explained in the Eighth Principle:

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:3
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:3)

**ב.** ואשר אמרתי כי לכל בִּנְיַן ששה זמנים זה אינו אלא לשלשָׁה בניני הפועלים כי בארבעה האחרים לא שייך הַפָּעוּל בעבור שהם עצמם פְעוּלִים גם בקצתם לא שייך הצווי כאשר יתבאר בכל אחד מהם:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**2.** And as for what I said, that every verb pattern has six tenses, this applies only to the three active patterns; for in the other four the passive does not apply, since they themselves are passive, and in some of them the imperative does not apply either, as will be explained with respect to each one:

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:4
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:4)

**ג.** ואשר אמרתי כי לכל זמן שני מינים זה צודק בכל הזמנים חוץ מן הַמָּקוֹר שלא שייך בו מין כלל כי הוא שוה לכל ונקרא מקור כי ממנו נובעות כל הפעולות שיתבאר עוד.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**3.** And as for what I said, that each tense has two genders, this is correct for all the tenses except for the *makor*, to which no gender applies at all, for it is the same for all. It is called the *makor* because from it all the actions derive, as will be further explained.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:5
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:5](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:5)

ואשר אמרתי כי לכל מין שְׁנֵי מִסְפָּרִים גם זה צודק בְּכֻלָּם חוץ מהמקור:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
And as for what I said, that each gender has two numbers, this too is correct in all cases except for the *makor*.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:6
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:6](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:6)

**ד.** ואשר אמרתי כי לכל מספר שלשה גופים, זה אינו אלא בֶּעָבַר וּבֶעָתִיד. אבל שאר הזמנים אין להם רק גוף אחד, כי אין לַבֵּינוֹנִי וְלַפָּעוּל רק גוף הנסתר.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**4.** And as for what I said, that each number has three persons, this applies only in the *past* and in the *future*. But the other tenses have only one person, for the *participle* and the *passive* have only the third person.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:7
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:7](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:7)

ואם תרצה לשמש בהם בשאר הגופים צריך להוסיף מלת כנוי הַנּוֹכַח עם הַנּוֹכַח.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
And if you wish to use them with the other persons, it is necessary to add a pronominal word of the *second person* together with the *second person*.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:8
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:8](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:8)

ומלת כנוי הַמְּדַבֵּר בַּעֲדוֹ עם הַמְּדַבֵּר בַּעֲדוֹ. כמו; אַתָּה פּוֹקֵד. אֲנִי פּוֹקֵד. אַתֶּם פּוֹקְדִים. אֲנַחְנוּ פּוֹקְדִים. אַתְּ פּוֹקֶדֶת. אַתֶּן פּוֹקְדוֹת. וכן בפעול.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
And likewise a pronominal word of the *first person* with the *first person*, for example: *atta poqed*, *ani poqed*, *attem poqedim*, *anachnu poqedim*, *att poqedet*, *atten poqedot*; and so too in the passive.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:9
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:9](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:9)

ואין לצווי רק גוף הַנּוֹכַח, ואין לדבר בו בשאר הגופים, כי אין מצווין אלא לנוכח:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
And the imperative has only the second person, and it cannot be used in the other persons, for commands are given only to one who is addressed.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:10
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:10](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:10)

**ה.** ואשר אמרתי כי לכל גוף דבור מיוחד זה אינו אלא לנוכח ולנסתר, אבל דבור המדבר בעדו, הוא שוה לזכר ולנקבה בכל הפעלים ובכל הכנויים, כמו; אֲנִי. אֲנַחְנוּ. וכן כָּל נִי וְנוּ שבכנויים.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**5.** And as for what I said, that each person has a distinct form of expression, this applies only to the second person and the third person. But the form of expression of the *first person* is the same for masculine and feminine in all verbs and in all suffixes, such as *ani*, *anachnu*, and likewise all *ni* and *nu* found among the suffixes.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:11
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:11](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:11)

אבל מלת הנסתרים השוה לזכרים ולנקבות אינה אלא בעבר לבדו כמו פָּקְדוּ.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
However, the form of the third person that is the same for masculine and feminine applies only in the past tense alone, such as *paqdu*.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:12
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:12](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:12)

והכלל כי כל דבור האדם נחלק לארבעה חלקים. לְיָחִיד. וּלְרַבִּים. לִיְחִידָה. וּלְרַבּוֹת.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
And the general rule is that all forms of speech are divided into four parts: singular masculine, plural masculine, singular feminine, and plural feminine.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:13
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:13](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:13)

ולכל אחד מאלו שלשה דבורים נוכח. נסתר. מדבר. והיה צריך אם כן להיות בכל זמן שלשה לרבים. שלשה לנקבה יחידה. שלשה לרבות. ולפי שבעבר נשתוו שלשה לזכרים ולנקבות כמו שיבא, על כן נשארו בו תשעה דבורים:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
And for each of these there are three persons: second person, third person, and first person. Accordingly, in each tense there should have been three forms for the masculine plural, three for the feminine singular, and three for the feminine plural. But since in the past tense the three persons are the same for masculine and feminine, as will be explained, there remain in it nine forms of expression.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:14
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:14](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:14)

**ו.** וכן בעתיד היו ראויים להיות שנים עשר דבורים, ולפי שנשתוו גם כן בו שני גופי המדברים בעדם, לא נשארו בו רק עשרה דבורים, ואף כי דבור הנסתרות והנמצאות באו באופן אחד, כי מלת תִּפְקַדְנָה משרתת לשניהם, מכל מקום אינו נקרא שוה, לשתי סבות:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**6.** And likewise in the future tense there ought to have been twelve forms of expression; but since the two first-person forms are also the same in it, there remain only ten forms of expression. And although the forms of the feminine third person and the feminine second person come in the same form — for the word *tifqadnah* serves for both — nevertheless it is not considered identical, for two reasons:

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:15
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:15](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:15)

האחת כי כל שָׁוֶה שהזכרתי, רוצה לומר שוה לזכר ולנקבה, וזה אינו כן:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
The first is that every instance of “identical” that I have mentioned means identical for masculine and feminine, and this is not the case here:

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:16
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 2:16](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/2:16)

והשנית שאין הוראתו שוה כי האחת לנסתרות, והשנית לנמצאות, וכן אף כי נעשה שני דבורים מן תִּפְקוֹד, לא נקרא שוה, כי האחת לנוכח, והשנית לנסתרת, ואין לועזין זה כזה, לכך לא נקרא שוה:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
And the second reason is that their meaning is not the same: for one applies to the third-person feminine plural, and the other to the second-person feminine plural. Likewise, even though two distinct forms are made from *tifqod*, they are not called identical, for one is for the second person and the other for the third person; and one is not substituted for the other. Therefore, they are not called identical.
