**הבנין השני נקרא בִּנְיַן נִפְעַל והוא של שלש מינים:**

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The second stem is called the *nif‘al* stem, and it is of three kinds:**

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:3
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/8:3)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
1. The first kind is a derivative of the transitive *qal* stem; that is to say, it receives the action directly from its parent, the *qal*. For example, if you say of the parent *akhal* (“he ate”), you say of the derivative *ne’ekhal* (“it was eaten”). Likewise: *nilkad*, *nisraf*, *nishbar*, or *nishbah*, as in “*im ganov yigganev*” (Exodus 22:9), “*sarof yissarfu*” (II Samuel 23), and many similar cases. All of these are passives effected by another. The meaning of this kind is exactly the same as that of the *pu‘al* stem, for there is no difference between “*ve-gunnav mi-beit ha-ish*” (Exodus 22:6) and *ve-nignav*, nor between “*ve-hinneh shoraf*” (Leviticus 10:16), which is from the *pu‘al* stem, and *nisraf*.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:4
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/8:4)

ויש לך לדעת שלא יבאו צווים מהמין הזה לעולם כי לא נוכל לומר הִשָּׂרֵף, הִגָּנֵב, הִלָּכֵד, הִשָּׁבֵר, אבל יבואו במין השני והטעם יתבאר לך בבנין פעל הדגוש (עיקר י' סימן ב'):

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
And you should know that imperatives never occur in this kind, for we cannot say *hissaref*, *higganev*, *hillaked*, or *hishaver*. Rather, they occur in the second kind, and the reason for this will be explained to you in the discussion of the *pi‘el* stem (Principle 10, section 2).

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:5
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:5](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/8:5)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**2. And the second kind** consists of *nif‘al* forms that are acted upon by themselves; this is the largest category within *nif‘al*. In this respect its meaning is truly like that of the *hitpa‘el* stem. Thus we find that the Scripture uses them interchangeably, as in “*al tittam’u be-khol elleh*” (Leviticus 11), which is equivalent to *tit-tetamm’u*; and afterward it says, “*ki be-khol elleh nitme’u ha-goyim*” (Leviticus 11), which is from the *nif‘al* stem. Likewise, Onkelos translates every expression of *nif‘al* in the language of *hitpa‘el*, and so too Rashi, as he explains on “*va-titkas*” (Genesis 24:44). And similarly, “*sheteh gam attah ve-he‘arel*” (Habakkuk 2:16). Imperatives also occur in *nif‘al* of this kind, and their meaning is like that of *hitpa‘el*, such as “*hishamer lekha*” (Genesis 31:24), “*hippared na me-‘alai*” (Genesis 13:9), which are equivalent to *hishtamer* and *hitpared*.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:6
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:6](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/8:6)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
And the general rule is that for all *nif‘al* forms of this kind there is no difference between them and the *hitpa‘el* stem. For example: “*yiqqavu ha-mayim ve-tera’eh ha-yabbashah*” (Genesis 1:9); likewise “*va-yera Hashem*” (Genesis 18), “*va-yinnaḥem Hashem*” (Genesis 6), “*shavat va-yinnafash*” (Exodus 31:17–18), “*el beito va-yeḥanak*” (II Samuel 17:23). All of these are to be understood as though they were from the *hitpa‘el* stem.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:7
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:7](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/8:7)

ויש נפעלים שלא נמצאו בקל כמו נִשְׁבַּע, נִלְחַם, נִשְׁעַן, נִזְהַר, נִכְנַע, ודמיהם, והם מפורשים באלו הם מהקל כמו שיתבאר בסוף עקר שלש עשרה:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
And there are *nif‘al* forms that are not found in the *qal* stem, such as *nishba‘*, *nilḥam*, *nish‘an*, *nizhar*, *nikhna‘*, and the like. These are explained as deriving from *qal*, as will be clarified at the end of the thirteenth principle.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:8
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:8](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/8:8)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**3.** And know that just as there are verbs in the *qal* stem that are sometimes transitive and sometimes intransitive, as I have written, so too in this stem there are *nif‘al* forms that are sometimes transitive and sometimes intransitive. For example: “*u-ve-navi nishmar*” (Hosea 13) is transitive, whereas “*ve-‘Amassa lo nishmar*” (II Samuel 14) is intransitive, its meaning being that he did not guard himself. Likewise, “*ve-nimkar bi-gneivato*” (Exodus 22:2) is transitive, meaning that the court sold him, whereas “*ve-nimkar lakh*” (Leviticus 25:39) is intransitive, as the Sages of blessed memory explained—that he sells himself because of his distress.

###### Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:9
[Sefer HaBachur, First Treatise 8:9](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sefer%20HaBachur/s/First%20Treatise/r/8:9)

ויש נפעלים נגזרים מפעלים עומדים והם זרים מאד, כמו; וְנִגַּשׁ מֹשֶׁה (שמות כ״ד:ב׳), וְנִקְרַב בַּעַל הַבַּיִת (שמות כב ז), כְּצֵל כִּנְטוֹתוֹ נֶהֱלָכְתִּי (תהילים ק״ט:כ״ג), אֶרֶץ נוֹשָׁבֶת (שמות יז), ודומיהם מעטים:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
And there are *nif‘al* forms that are derived from intransitive verbs, and these are very rare, such as “*ve-niggash Mosheh*” (Exodus 24:2), “*ve-niqrav ba‘al ha-bayit*” (Exodus 22:7), “*ke-tsel kintoto nehelakhti*” (Psalms 109:23), “*erets noshavet*” (Exodus 17), and the like — only a few.
