**מִצְוַת שְׁבִיתָה מִמְּלָאכָה בְּיוֹם עֲצֶרֶת** – לִשְׁבֹּת מִכָּל מְלָאכָה זוּלָתִי מָה שֶׁמְּיֻחָד לְצֹרֶךְ אֹכֶל נֶפֶשׁ בְּיוֹם שִׁשָּׁה בְּסִיוָן, שֶׁזֶּהוּ הַנִּקְרָא חַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (ויקרא כג כא) וּקְרָאתֶם בְּעֶצֶם הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה מִקְרָא קֹדֶשׁ. וּכְבָר כָּתַבְתִּי בְּמִצְוַת שְׁבִיתַת יוֹם רִאשׁוֹן שֶׁל פֶּסַח שֶׁבַּסֵּדֶר הַזֶּה (מצוה רצז) שֶׁבְּכָל מָקוֹם שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר בַּתּוֹרָה מִקְרָא קֹדֶשׁ עִנְיָנוֹ לוֹמַר קַדְּשֵׁהוּ שֶׁלֹּא לַעֲשׂוֹת בּוֹ מְלָאכָה.

**The commandment of resting from work on the day of [Shavuot]:** To rest from all work on the sixth day of Sivan — and this is called the festival of Shavuot (Weeks) — except for that which is specific to the needs of the eating of the soul as it is stated (Leviticus 23:21), “And you shall call on that very day, a holy occasion.” And I have already written in the commandment of resting on the first day of Pesach in this Order (Sefer HaChinukh 297) that in any place about which it is stated in the Torah, “a holy occasion,” its content is to say, make it holy, to not do work on it.

וְגַם שָׁם כָּתוּב רֶמֶז מִשָּׁרְשֵׁי הַמִּצְוָה. שֶׁמַּסְפִּיק עַל צַד הַפְּשָׁט בְּכָל הַיָּמִים טוֹבִים. וּבְמִי נוֹהֶגֶת, וּקְצָת דִּינֶיהָ נִכְתֹּב בְּלָאו דְּאִסּוּר מְלָאכָה דְּיוֹם טוֹב (מצוה רחצ) שֶׁלְּאַחַר זֶה בְּעֶזְרַת הַשֵּׁם [או"ח סימן תצז].

And also a hint from the roots of the commandment is written there from the angle of the simple understanding that suffices for all of the holidays. And we have written some of its laws in the negative commandment after it, of the prohibition of work on the holiday (Sefer HaChinukh 298), with God’s help. (See Tur, Orach Chaim 497.)
