תורת ישראל היא תורת חיים, ובבסיסה נמצאת הנחת היסוד שיש לנסות ולמצוא משמעות וייעוד לחיים בכל מצב בחיי האדם. השאיפה היא שאדם יגיע להשקפה שגם במצבים המורכבים והקשים ביותר שעוברים עליו, תמיד יש מה לעשות ותמיד יש תכלית שלמענה כדאי לחיות. מציאת תכלית ומשמעות לחיים מעצימה את האדם ומעניקה לו כוחות להתמודדות מול הקשיים הניצבים מולו. בפרט אפשר לומר את הדברים במצבים מורכבים של מחלה קשה, כגון שלבים מסוימים של מחלת הסרטן שבה אנו עוסקים. מחלה מעוררת אצל האדם פחדים, היא מערערת את הביטחון הבסיסי שלו, מעלה שאלות קיומיות ותהייה על עצם החיים ומשמעותם. לפעמים האדם מנסה לברוח מרגשות ושאלות כאלה ולהדחיקן, אך לא תמיד בהצלחה.

אפשר להציע לא לברוח מרגשות, אלא להשתמש בהם כדי לנסות ולמצוא משמעות גם במצב החדש והקשה שהאדם נקלע אליו. המחלה משנה את הכללים והתנאים הבסיסיים שבהם האדם חי קודם לה, ולכן עליו לעצב לעצמו דפוסי חיים חדשים. צורך זה עלול לאיים על האדם שהתרגל עד עכשיו לחיים מסוימים, על יתרונותיהם ומגרעותיהם. כיוון שהיה מדובר באורח חיים מוכר, עצם השִגרה המוכרת נסכה בו ביטחון. לעומת זאת, קטיעת השִגרה ושבירתה על ידי המחלה, ההזדקקות לרופאים, לאחיות, לטכנאים ולפקידים, ואפילו לבני משפחתו הקרובים, החשיפה המביכה בפניהם והתלות בהם, לעיתים אף ברמות התפקוד הבסיסיות ביותר, כל אלה עלולים להוריד מאוד את הביטחון העצמי של האדם. לכן מציאת משמעות ותכלית עשויה לסייע לאדם לעצב מחדש את עולמו הנפשי, ומתוך כך גם ייקל עליו להתמודד עם המציאות החדשה שנכפתה עליו ולנהל אותה במידת האפשר.

מצבים כאלה עשויים לחזק באדם את האמונה בריבונו של עולם, בכוח אלוקי שמנהל את העולם. מפני שהתפיסה שלפיה האדם מנהל את העולם מתערערת מאוד עקב המחלה. המחלה מכריחה את האדם להתייצב נוכח העובדה שהוא כבר לא מנהל את חייו כפי שהיה רוצה. במצב כזה האדם צריך לשאוב כוחות ממקומות אחרים. אדם יכול וצריך לקבל כוחות והעצמה מהחברה סביבו, בעיקר ממשפחתו ומחבריו. עם זאת, היכולת לקבל כוחות ממקום על אנושי, שמייצג בעיני האדם המאמין את הטוב והאמיתי בחיים – גם במצבים קשים של חולי לאדם עצמו – יכולת כזאת עשויה לתת רגיעה מסוימת לאדם עצמו, מתוך התפיסה שלא הכל תלוי רק בו, לא כל האחריות מוטלת רק עליו. אומנם, האדם צריך לנקוט פעולות חיוניות ולעיתים גם פעולות נמרצות כדי להתרפא, אל לו להתרשל ולהתבטל, חלילה; אך לא כל העול מוטל רק עליו. אדם שמשתדל לראות את ריבונו של עולם גם תוך כדי הקשיים הגדולים שהוא נתון בהם – הן על ידי עצם המוּדעות, הן על ידי תפילות, והן על ידי פעילות של חסד ונתינה לזולת עד כמה שהדבר אפשרי במצבו, וכך הוא גם זוכה מבחינה רוחנית, על פי התפיסה היהודית, וגם הופך מאדם תלותי ונתמך לאדם שפועל ומעניק לזולתו – הוא עצמו מתעצם. אדם כזה שמשתף שם שמיים בהתמודדותו ובחלוקה מסוימת של האחריות למצב, עשוי לקבל הקלה נפשית, שקט פנימי, וכוחות גדולים יותר לבצע בנחת רוח את המשימות המורכבות שמוטלות עליו כדי להתרפא ממחלתו, מבלי להעיק על עצמו בחששות תמידיים שמא לא פעל נכון, ושאולי היה צריך לנהוג אחרת.

אפשר לומר כאן בהשאלה את דברי חז"ל במסכת אבות¹: "לא עליך המלאכה לגמור, ואי אתה בן חורין ליפטר הימנה". כלומר, לא כל האחריות מוטלת רק עליך; אין לך חיוב מעיק לבצע רק דברים נכונים ולעולם לא לטעות; להתנהג תמיד אך ורק באופן הנכון, הראוי והמושלם – לא, אין אתה מחויב בכך, לא עליך המלאכה לגמור. אך לעומת זאת – אי אתה בן חורין ליפטר הימנה – אי אפשר להתעלם מהמציאות החדשה, הקשה והתובענית של החולי. צריך ללכת לרופא, לעמוד בתור, לבצע בדיקות לא נעימות, להיחשף בפני אנשים אחרים, ובמקרים רבים גם לשלם כסף רב. אי אפשר לברוח מהמצב, והאדם צריך לשתף פעולה כדי לנסות ולעצב מחדש את מצבו, מתוך חריצות ויעילות במידת האפשר, אך גם בענווה הראויה. תפיסה מורכבת דו-ממדית כזאת עשויה להיות יעילה גם מבחינה מעשית, ועם זאת לאפשר התנהלות יותר נינוחה במידת האפשר מבחינה רוחנית.

תובנה נוספת שאפשר ללמוד ממאמר חז"ל זה היא שהאדם לא נבחן רק במבחן התוצאה. גם אם האדם יצליח להירפא ממחלתו וגם אם לא, עצם רצונו להתמודד ראוי להערכה. יש להדגיש נקודה זו בייחוד בעולם המערבי שבו הכל נמדד במדד ההצלחה, התוצאה והפרסום. לעומת זאת, בגישה היהודית שאותה אנו מבקשים להעצים כאן, האדם נמדד בעצם נכונותו להתמודד. ההתמודדות עצמה מעניקה לאדם משמעות ותוכן, ובעקבות כך גם סיכוי לחיים טובים ומשמעותיים יותר.

כתיב: "ה' צַדִּיק יִבְחָן וְרָשָׁע וְאֹהֵב חָמָס שָׂנְאָה נַפְשׁוֹ" (תהלים יא, ה). אמר רבי יונתן: היוצר הזה אינו בודק קנקנים מרועעים, שאינו מספיק לקוש עליהם אחת עד שהוא שוברם. ומי הוא בודק? בקנקנים יפים, אפילו מקיש עליהם כמה פעמים אינם נשברים, כך אין הקדוש ברוך הוא מנסה את הרשעים אלא את הצדיקים, שנאמר: "ה' צַדִּיק יִבְחָן", וכתיב: "וְהָאֱלֹהִים נִסָּה אֶת אַבְרָהָם" (בראשית כב, א). אמר רבי יוסי בן חנינא: הפשתני הזה בשעה שהוא יודע שהפשתן שלו יפה, כל שהוא כותשה היא משתבחת, וכל זמן שהוא מקיש עליה היא משתמנת, ובשעה שהוא יודע שהפשתן שלו רעה, אינו מספיק לקוש עליה אחת עד שהיא פוקעת, כך אין הקדוש ברוך הוא מנסה את הרשעים אלא את הצדיקים, שנאמר: "ה' צַדִּיק יִבְחָן". אמר רבי אלעזר: משל לבעל הבית שהיו לו שתי פרות – אחת כחה יפה, ואחת כחה רע. על מי הוא נותן את העול? לא על זאת שכחה יפה?! כך הקדוש ברוך הוא מנסה את הצדיקים, שנאמר: "ה' צַדִּיק יִבְחָן".

פרשנות מפורטת של המדרש חורגת ממסגרת ספר זה. נציין רק בקיצור נמרץ שכל אחד מהחכמים משיב תשובה שונה לשאלה – מדוע הבורא מעמיד בניסיון את הצדיקים דווקא. אפשר לבאר את דברי רבי יונתן, שהניסיון נועד להראות לעולם את מעלת הצדיק כלימוד לכלל בני האדם לאיזו דרגה עצומה יכולה להגיע אהבת ה' ויראתו, וכדברי הרמב"ם². את דברי רבי יוסי בן חנינא אפשר לבאר כך שלדעתו מטרת הניסיון להיטיב עם המנוסה, כדברי הרמב"ן³. את דברי רבי אלעזר אפשר לבאר כך שהצדיק – יסוד העולם – הוא המצדיק את קיום העולם כולו, וכדברי רב יהודה בשם רב על רבי חנינא בן דוסא: בכל יום ויום בת קול יוצאת מהר חורב ואומרת: "כל העולם כולו נזונין בשביל חנינא בני, וחנינא בני – די לו בקב חרובין מערב שבת לערב שבת"⁴. הדברים ארוכים, מורכבים ומפורטים, ואין כאן המקום להאריך בהם⁵. לענייננו נתייחס כאן לשיטת רבי יוסי בן חנינא והרמב"ן.

התפיסה היהודית היא שאין מעמידים אדם בניסיון שאינו יכול לעמוד בו. הביטוי התלמודי הוא: "אין הקדוש ברוך הוא בא בטרוניא עם בריותיו"⁶. אם אדם נתקל במצב של התמודדות, אין המטרה להשפיל את האדם אלא אדרבה – לרוממו. התפיסה והאמונה היהודית היא שלאדם שניצב מול קושי ניתנו גם כוחות להתמודד. תפיסה כזאת עשויה לסייע לאדם להפוך את הבעיה לאתגר ולהתמודדות; לעבור ממסלול פסיבי, מיואש ונכנע, למסלול אקטיבי של יוזמה ושל ניסיון להתמודד. תפיסה כזאת לא מקילה ראש בקשיים ואינה מזלזלת בעוצמתם, אך היא מעדיפה את דרך החשיבה החיובית ואת מתן הסיכוי להצלחה ולרפואה.

כלל יהודי נוסף שקשור לתפיסה זו נקרא: "לפום צערא אגרא"⁷ – לפי עוצמת הקשיים כך מוענק לאדם שכר. אם יש לאדם מסוים התמודדות גדולה, המשמעות היא שאדם זה עשוי לקבל שכר גדול יותר על התמודדות כזאת. חיילים ביחידות מובחרות נדרשים לעמוד במאמצים גדולים ובניסיונות קשים יותר מאשר חיילים אחרים. השכר אינו רק שכר חיצוני, אלא בייחוד שכר פנימי – עצם נתינת האפשרות לאדם להתמודד ולהצליח, ולעמוד בניסיון. כלל זה מחזק בעקיפין את העיקרון הקודם שהזכרנו – שיש לאדם זה כוח להתמודד אל מול האתגר שהוצב בפניו ולהצליח.

יש הרבה גורמים שאפשר לפנות אליהם כדי להיעזר וכדי לקבל כוחות וסיוע. יש גורמים מקצועיים שעוסקים ברפואה, בשיקום, בפסיכולוגיה ובעזרה סוציאלית. יש גורמים משפחתיים וחברתיים שיכולים לתת לאדם החולה עידוד ותמיכה. יש מערכות תומכות, כגון האגודה למלחמה בסרטן ומקבילותיה. אפשר לפנות גם לרב המקומי או לכל רב שיש לאדם ולמשפחתו קשר עמו, רבני פוע"ה מסייעים יום יום לאנשים רבים מאוד. הרבנים מתנסים תדיר בתמיכה בחולים, ובכללם גם בחולי סרטן. לרבנים אין את הידע הרפואי שיש לרופאים ולמטפלים השונים, אך יש להם הכשרה תורנית שכוללת בתוכה הדרכה יהודית לזמנים של מצוקה וקושי, רצון להיטיב, ובדרך כלל גם ניסיון והבנה ביחסי אנוש. הרופא וגם הרב מחויבים לסודיות רפואית ולאתיקה, והם בוודאי ינצרו בלבם את כל הפרטים האישיים והאינטימיים של החולה. בכל זאת, מותר לחולה לבקש מהרב או מהרופא שישמרו בסוד את הפרטים האישיים שהם שומעים ממנו. בקשה כזאת עשויה להקל על החולה ולכן היא בהחלט לגיטימית.

כשהאדם ניצב מול ייסורים משימתו היא לא לשאול **מדוע** קרה מה שקרה, אלא – **מה תפקידי** כאדם וכיצד עליי להתנהג כשבאים עליי ייסורים. את שאלת 'מדוע זה קורה?' על האדם להחליף בשאלה 'קרה מה שקרה, וכעת מה תפקידי? מה אני צריך לעשות במצב כזה?' צריך להחליף את שאלת **הסיבה** בשאלת **התכלית.** שאלת הסיבה היא – מדוע זה קרה? ולשאלה זו לעולם לא תהיה תשובה. שאלת התכלית היא שאלה שונה לחלוטין, היא מבררת – לאחר שקרה משהו – מה תכלית העניין? מה אני צריך לעשות? איך אפעל כעת? שאלת הסיבה עוסקת בעבר, שאלת התכלית ממוקדת בעתיד. **שאלת הסיבה מיועדת לאל, שאלת התכלית מיועדת לאדם.**

שאלת הסיבה – 'מדוע זה קרה?' היא שאלה עקרה, אין לה תשובה, והיא אינה מוליכה לשום מקום חיובי. היא בהחלט עלולה לגרום לאדם רגשות שליליים של כעס ותחושת אין אונים אל מול המציאות הקשה. לעומת זאת, שאלת התכלית – 'מה אני צריך לעשות?', עשויה להוביל את האדם למקום של חשיבה בונה, של עשייה והתמודדות. באופן כזה האדם מסוגל לנסות ולהפוך את הכוחות השליליים של הכעס, האכזבה והרגשת חוסר האונים, לרגשות חיוביים של רצון לצמיחה דווקא מתוך הקושי הנורא. האדם לא מטיל את האשמה על כוחות חיצוניים גדולים ממנו, שעלולים להצטייר ככוחות שליליים, אלא לוקח את האחריות על עצמו מתוך מטרה חיובית של העצמה אישית, תיקון וריפוי.

יש להדגיש שהתפילה אינה תחליף לטיפול הרפואי. יש להיזהר מלהיסחף בתחושה של 'אני אתפלל ואז הכל יהיה בסדר ואני אתרפא'. איננו יודעים מתי וכיצד תפילות נענות, וגם אין זה תחום שאנחנו יכולים או צריכים להידרש אליו. לכן אנחנו מתפללים ומבקשים ישועה מריבונו של עולם, הרופא לכל בשר ומפליא לעשות. בד בבד עם התפילות, כיוון שניתנה רשות לרופא לרפאות, אנחנו גם מבצעים את המוטל עלינו בפשטות, על פי הדרכת הרופאים ואנשי המקצוע.

היבט אחר לתפילה הוא שעל ידי כך שהאדם מרומם את עצמו באמצעות התפילה והקישור לה' למדרגות רוחניות גבוהות יותר, ממילא ייתכן שגם הגזירות שנגזרו עליו ישתנו, משום שהגזירה הייתה על אדם מסוים ברמה רוחנית מסוימת, ואם אדם זה נתעלה והוא נמצא במדרגה רוחנית אחרת, גם ההתייחסות אליו עשויה להשתנות. לכן ראוי לצרף לתפילה גם עשיית חסד וצדקה, מצוות ומעשים טובים בכלל. כשאדם מרחם על אחרים ומסייע להם, יש סברה ותקווה שכך ינהגו גם עמו. שכן במידה שאדם מודד לאחרים, בה מודדים לו⁹.

צריך שהתפִלה תהיה נקיה מכל רעיון של שינוי רצון והתפעלות בחוק ה' יתברך, מה שהוא דעה כוזבת ביחס לאלהות ומביאה להשחתת סדרי השלמות האנושית. ולעומת זה עצם ערך התפִלה ובטחון פעולתה בקבוץ תנאיה, גם מלבד פעולת השגת המבוקש והתרוממות הנפש וזכותה על ידי התפִלה, היא פִנה גדולה בהשלמת האדם. על כן צריך שיבין כל מתפלל, שהתפִלה היא חק נפלא, שחקק הקב"ה בעולמו, להשלמת יצוריו בכל דרכי השלמות, וביחוד לתכלית השלמתם המוסרית הנצמחת ממנה, ואינה בגדר ענין מוטבע בחוקו יתברך, חלילה.
